‘Gir will never be the same': Parimal Nathwani honours late lions with folk tribute
Gir will forever carry their imprint, Mr. Nathwani said, noting that while time may move on, the echoes of their presence will continue to shape the forest they once called home. 'Gir will never be the same without them.'
In a span of just over a month, Gir lost two of its famed lions to two separate territorial fights. Veeru succumbed to his injuries on June 11, followed by Jay, who died on July 29 after struggling to recover from a separate clash.
Earlier this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid a visit to Gir and made it a point to see the famed duo, known for their unbreakable bond.
Mr. Nathwani, a wildlife enthusiast, also released a soulful folk-style song titled 'Jay-Veeru Ni Jodi', and a documentary titled 'Jay-Veeru Ni Amar Gatha', capturing the spirit, bond, and legacy of the two beloved big cats who recently passed away.
He broke down in tears as he spoke about his bond with the lions, his voice trembling with emotion while recalling the years spent observing the duo.
Set against the backdrop of traditional melodies and rustic instruments, the song is a homage to the indomitable duo who once ruled the Gir forests with grace, strength, and brotherhood, he said. 'The composition reflects the deep emotional connection between the two lions and the countless admirers they left behind.'
Renowned Gujarati singer Aditya Gadhvi provided vocals for the track and documentary, while acclaimed writer Parth Tarpara penned the lyrics and story. The music was composed by Kedar & Bhargav, the same duo behind the popular song *GirGajavati Aavi Sinhan*, released by Mr. Nathwani on World Lion Day (August 10, 2024).
Crafted by folk artists deeply rooted in Gujarat's cultural heritage, 'Jay-Veeru Ni Jodi' is more than just a song—it is a celebration of the lions' enduring legacy and an emotional farewell to two majestic beings who transcended their animal identity to become legends of Gir.
'Jay and Veeru were not just lions—they symbolised loyalty, unity, and companionship. Their story moved many of us deeply,' said Mr. Nathwani. 'This song and the documentary express the emotions I, and many other lion lovers, feel. It is my way of honouring their memory.'
To commemorate this year's World Lion Day, Mr. Nathwani also designed special T-shirts in honor of Jay and Veeru, available at the Sasan-Gir Souvenir Shop.
'Let the spirit of Jay and Veeru roar forever in our hearts. Through this song and documentary, I hope to immortalise their memory in a way they truly deserve,' he said.
The Rajya Sabha MP also recalled his close connection to the iconic lions, noting that he was personally involved in naming Jay and Veeru alongside forest department officials.

Ishani & Hardik Dave Raksha Bandhan goes beyond this day for us,' say popular garba and folk singers Ishani and Hardik Dave, children of veteran Gujarati folk singer Praful Dave. They share, 'The only difference when it comes to the evolution of our bond is that during childhood, we used to do dhamaal together at home. Now, we do dhamaal on stage.' Ishani says, 'Although we try to spend Raksha Bandhan together, our schedules hardly align due to our concerts, shows and shoots. But whenever we are together, it is a celebration for us. Sometimes, we celebrate Raksha Bandhan in advance too.' Hardik adds, 'Our love for each other goes beyond one day. Humare liye Raksha Bandhan pura saal hi hota hai.' In a conversation, the Dave siblings talk about their childhood memories, work dynamics and online banter. 'Our gifting game has been unique since childhood' Asked about his fondest childhood memory, Hardik shares, 'We were very young, and Ishani wanted a puppy on Raksha Bandhan. I remember running around our colony in Bhavnagar and exploring small lanes. I gifted her a puppy so that she could play with him for some time. She kept him on her lap, and I was so happy to see her. Today, while gifting each other, we give it a lot of thought. Bachpan mein toh chhoti chhoti cheezon mein bhi we used to get ecstatic. However, I feel very blessed and fortunate to have a younger sister like her, who makes my life better.' Ishani adds, 'Our gifting game has been unique since childhood. Years back, when I was studying in Chennai and we couldn't celebrate Rakshabandhan together, I gifted the first cut of Khamma Veera Ne, a song I made for him. We later sang it together, but the first raw copy was sent to him as a gift. Since Hardik earns well now, I expect a bigger gift from him (laughs)! Hardik has offered amazing support over the years, which included standing up against the world and even parents sometimes when there were discussions about my life and career. With a protective brother like him, I feel I am always on the winning side. 'We guide each other on how to improve as artistes' Talking about their work dynamics, Ishani says, 'Both of us have been singing for a long time, and have done shows, but separately. There are certain areas where both of us lag, and with our experiences and strengths, we often guide each other on how we can try and improve that. Hardik is a brilliant music arranger, so I seek his advice for my shows.' Hardik agrees, 'Our styles are very different, so there is always a different approach towards music, which helps in bringing a new perspective. Also, we often joke that I have always taught Ishani what to do on stage, and she has always taught me what not to do on stage (laughs).' 'Our online banter is just a reflection of our bond in real life' Ishani and Hardik often indulge in online banter by tagging each other in memes and joking about each other. Ishani laughs, 'We are real on social media, and our banters are just a reflection of our bond in real life. This is how we have been entertaining each other.' Hardik agrees, 'It all started with some jokes I made on Ishani, which she replied to. And they are not even jokes, it all comes from our real-life situations, especially Ishani's, that are funny. Now, I get messages from people saying that they are waiting for more of such fun.'

Surat singers give Rakshabandhan a musical twist with Gujarati-English fusion
Surat: This Rakshabandhan , the festival of sibling love is getting a unique musical twist from city's homegrown talent. Two city-based singers have created an Indo-Western fusion, blending the operatic style of English ballads with the rhythmic charm of Gujarati Garba. The result is a soulful pairing of the beloved Gujarati folk song 'Kon Halave Limdi' with the timeless English ballad 'Scarborough Fair'. Gujarati folk singer Kashyap Dave and Western classical vocalist Vanya Bhatt began experimenting with fusion concepts earlier this year. "Nothing captures the bond between a brother and sister better than Kon Halave Limdi," says Vanya, a graduate in Western classical vocals from Christ University, Bengaluru. "To give it an Indo-Western dimension, we paired it with Scarborough Fair. The harmony it created felt both fresh and familiar." Music production was handled by Jimmy Desai, who calls the composition "a rare blend." He adds, "You don't often hear opera-style singing set to a Garba rhythm. We crafted the arrangement to preserve the essence of both songs while making the festival feel even more special."
