‘6 Deaths Per Hour': India's National Highways Seeing Highest Daily Fatalities In 2025 Since 2022
Last Updated: The government informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that 26,770 road accident fatalities have been reported on national highways up to June in 2025 The national highways in India continue to witness a grim toll in 2025, with close to 150 people dying daily on average—about six deaths every hour—according to an analysis of official data. The ministry of road transport and highways informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that 26,770 road accident fatalities have been reported on national highways up to June in 2025. The daily average in 2023 was 147 deaths, and in 2024 it was 144. The total deaths reported in the year 2023 were 53,372, which dropped to 52,609 in 2024. The ministry publishes 'Road Accidents in India" annually based on data received from states and union territories. The report has been published for calendar years up to 2022, and the reports beyond that are awaited. Odisha MP Sasmit Patra had asked the ministry about the increase in road accident deaths across national highways. Gadkari informed the House that the eDAR (electronic Detailed Accident Report) portal has been developed, which is a central repository for reporting, management, and analysis of road accident data across the country. The numbers for 2023, 2024, and the current year are as per data entered by states and UTs on the eDAR portal as of July 17. Analysis of the data from MoRTH's annual report since 2019 shows that the only year when there was some relief from deaths on national highways was 2020—clearly due to mobility restrictions during Covid lockdowns. The daily and hourly averages fell to 125 and five, the lowest across the seven-year period. As shown in the graph, the average hourly deaths between 2019 and 2025 have remained about six, except in 2020, while the daily deaths ranged between 125 and 152. In another reply to Punjab MP Ashok Mittal, Gadkari said that Advanced Life Support (ALS) ambulances have been deployed on certain stretches of national highways in light of the recommendations of the concerned district road safety committees, in addition to the ambulance services provided by various state governments. The House was also informed that the National Ambulance Helpline Number 102 is available to all road users. 'In addition, NHAI has deployed a dispatch system based on a call centre to monitor the operations of these ambulances following distress calls. The average response time after intimation of the incident to 1033 is generally targeted to be around 20-30 minutes, depending on the location of the distress call with the ambulance," Gadkari added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. BJD to raise growing crime against women in Odisha in Parliament session: MP Patra
BHUBANESWAR: The BJD is set to raise the issue of deteriorating law and order situation in Odisha, especially the growing crime against women, during the monsoon session of Parliament beginning Monday. After attending the all-party meeting ahead of the Parliament session in New Delhi on Sunday, BJD Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra told mediapersons that there seems to be a complete collapse of law and order situation in the state. There has also been an alarming rise in heinous crimes against women and girl children in Odisha. Patra said the recent incident of self-immolation of a girl student of FM (Autonomous) College in Balasore has shaken the conscience of the nation. He highlighted that the victim had reached out to the BJP MP in Balasore and also to the local administration. 'She had also brought her plight to the notice of the chief minister and the Higher Education minister, but everyone turned their back. She was a student as well as an active member of ABVP,' he said. Soon after the Balasore incident, a 15-year-old girl in Puri district was set ablaze by miscreants. 'This clearly shows how the Odisha BJP government is ruling the state in utter lawlessness and anarchy,' Patra said. The BJD MP said death of three devotees outside the Gundicha temple during Rath Yatra in Puri due to a stampede and other issues focused on the state's interest will also be raised by the party during the session. BJD leaders and workers earlier gheraoed Balanga police station demanding immediate arrest of the culprits in the incident. A large number of party leaders and workers lit lamps in front of the Lingaraj temple in the evening praying for the early recovery of the victim.

GCC push will be competitive, political as states play catch-up
Sasmit Patra (File photo) BENGALURU: The race to attract global capability centres (GCCs) will intensify across India as states compete not just on incentives but also on political priorities, said Dr. Sasmit Patra, MP and member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and IT, at the USIBC Bengaluru Summit on June 25. 'By 2030, you will have different states openly competing for GCC investments. It's going to be competitive and political as well,' Patra said. 'Karnataka is the leader, but many states aren't as sensitised to this shift. They will have to adopt policies that match their core competencies, whether in mining, coal or bauxite, if they want to secure a share of this growth.' EV Ramana Reddy, Chairman of the Karnataka Skill Development Authority, said that the state aims to drive GCC expansion beyond its traditional hubs. 'We have announced the first dedicated GCC policy in the country. Our goal is 500 more GCCs by 2029-30, adding $50 billion in economic contribution and creating 3.5 lakhs jobs, with at least one‑third of those jobs beyond Bengaluru. We don't call it tier‑one or tier‑two anymore, we call it 'beyond Bengaluru',' he said. Panelists also highlighted the role of digital infrastructure and trust in shaping the next phase of GCC growth. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo Vyom Upadhyay, Deputy Chief Technology Officer of ICICI Bank, said the data centre boom will be a catalyst. 'With strong data security and trust layers, India has a unique opportunity to evolve from a GCC powerhouse to an AI development hub. That's the trajectory we should be looking at,' he said. The panel concluded that state‑level policies, targeted incentives and digital trust will be critical as the GCC boom spreads beyond traditional hubs. Karnataka, long the state to beat, will have to contend with rising competition as other states finetune their policies and build sector‑specific ecosystems. The shift, panelists said, is both an economic and political test, one that will define India's role in global GCC and AI landscapes over the coming decade.
