Minister hails A.P. for winning 10 ODOP awards
Minister for Backward Classes Welfare and Textiles S. Savitha, on Sunday, hailed Andhra Pradesh for securing as many as 10 national awards under the 'One District–One Product' (ODOP) initiative. While seven of the 10 were in recognition of the handlooms and handicraft products, two were in the agriculture sector, and one in the inter-State category. Speaking at a press conference here, the Minister attributed the achievement to the constant support from the coalition government. The products that won the awards included Bobbili veena (Vizianagaram), Etikoppaka toys (Anakapalli), Peddapuram and Chirala silk saris (Kakinada and Bapatla), Venkatagiri saris (Tirupati), Narsapur lace (West Godavari), and Dharmavaram silk saris (Sri Sathya Sai). The Guntur chilli and Srikakulam cashew nuts also bagged awards, the Ms. Savitha said. She said that the awards ceremony will be held in New Delhi on July 14 (Monday), and Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will present the honours. District Collectors and senior artisans from the respective districts will be attending the event. Ms. Savitha further announced the rollout of the free power scheme for weavers, with effect from August 7. This initiative will provide 200 units of power for loom owners and 500 units for pit loom operators. The disbursement of the benefits to the thrift societies will also be held on the same day. 'The State government has plans to bring other unique products such as Kadapa banana, Chittoor tomato, and Anantapur groundnut under ODOP initiative,' the Minister added.

Malaria month and TB awareness posters released
Puttaparthi: Under the guidance of the Department of Health, Medical and Family Welfare, Government of Andhra Pradesh, 'Malaria Month' is being observed from June 1 to June 30 with the slogan 'Malaria Elimination Begins with Us.' As part of this campaign, Sri Sathya Sai District Collector TS Chetan and District Medical and Health Officer Dr Fairoza Begum released awareness wall posters on Monday. The event was attended by District Assistant Malaria Officer Lakshman Naik, Sub-Unit Officers BV Ramana and Gopinaik, DEO Dhanunjaya Reddy, and Health Assistant Shiva. Officials also urged the public to voluntarily participate in the World Blood Donor Day blood donation camps to be held on June 14. Citizens aged between 18 to 45 years are eligible to donate blood. As part of the 100-Day TB Vulnerable Program, the Collector also unveiled wall posters to spread awareness. The event was also attended by MOT Dr Gayathri, PPM Veera Nagendra, and DPC Mallikarjuna.

Knowledge of legal rights must for eliminating social inequalities, says Sathya Sai SP
The Sri Sathya Sai district police on Saturday held a special awareness drive at Bullasamudram village of Madakasira mandal to celebrate Civil Rights Day, highlighting the importance of constitutional rights and social equality. Superintendent of Police V. Ratna inaugurated the programme and addressed a gathering of students, villagers and police personnel. The SP said the Indian Constitution bestows upon every citizen the right to equality, freedom and protection from suppression and exploitation. She called for eliminating discrimination of all kinds to achieve true social justice. 'Every citizen must understand and exercise their legal rights,' the SP said. Ms. Ratna observed that during the past six months, awareness programmes connected to the importance of Civil Rights Day were organised across the district. She thanked officials, students, police and village elders for their cooperation in conducting the camps to educate the public. 'It's the responsibility of everyone to eliminate social inequalities, and this alone can create a society of true equality,' Mr. Ratna said. Deploring the still-prevalent practice of child marriage, the SP said this social aberration was a punishable offense. Ms. Ratna highlighted a plethora of government welfare schemes and the economic sustenance programmes of NGOs for the underprivileged in society, vulnerable to the scourge of child marriages. The SP called upon women, particularly those working and in colleges, to download the Shakti App on their mobiles, as this would protect them from any external attacks from the miscreants. Senior officials from the Women and Child Welfare, police, revenue and panchayat raj departments attended the event.

Sri Sathya Sai Collector warns against gender determination tests
Sri Sathya Sai District Collector T.S. Chetan on Saturday (May 24) said gender determination test is a criminal offense under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act (PCPNDT Act, 1994) and warned of action against scanning centres conducting the tests and those encouraging it. He was addressing medical and paramedical staff and individuals and entities working against gender determination test at an event in the collectorate. 'The departments of medical and health, women and child welfare, civic bodies, revenue and police as well as NGOs should strive to enforce the law,' he said, adding that searches should be carried out frequently in scanning centres suspected to be conducting such tests. Mr. Chetan said scanning centres violating the Act would be sealed and the operators would face serious legal consequences, including imprisonment. Additional District Judge K. Shailaja underscored the need for maintaining strict surveillance across the border areas with Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The Collector also reviewed the birth and death records at civic bodies and private nursing homes. He directed the District Medical and Health officer to submit a report on mandal-level sex ratio.
