Knowledge of legal rights must for eliminating social inequalities, says Sathya Sai SP
The Sri Sathya Sai district police on Saturday held a special awareness drive at Bullasamudram village of Madakasira mandal to celebrate Civil Rights Day, highlighting the importance of constitutional rights and social equality.
Superintendent of Police V. Ratna inaugurated the programme and addressed a gathering of students, villagers and police personnel. The SP said the Indian Constitution bestows upon every citizen the right to equality, freedom and protection from suppression and exploitation. She called for eliminating discrimination of all kinds to achieve true social justice. 'Every citizen must understand and exercise their legal rights,' the SP said.
Ms. Ratna observed that during the past six months, awareness programmes connected to the importance of Civil Rights Day were organised across the district. She thanked officials, students, police and village elders for their cooperation in conducting the camps to educate the public. 'It's the responsibility of everyone to eliminate social inequalities, and this alone can create a society of true equality,' Mr. Ratna said.
Deploring the still-prevalent practice of child marriage, the SP said this social aberration was a punishable offense. Ms. Ratna highlighted a plethora of government welfare schemes and the economic sustenance programmes of NGOs for the underprivileged in society, vulnerable to the scourge of child marriages.
The SP called upon women, particularly those working and in colleges, to download the Shakti App on their mobiles, as this would protect them from any external attacks from the miscreants.
Senior officials from the Women and Child Welfare, police, revenue and panchayat raj departments attended the event.

Burglar who invested 10L, disguised as woman held
Mumbai: A 44-year-old man who amassed enough wealth through committing burglaries to be able to invest in properties has been arrested by Malad Police. A team supervised by DCP Anand Bhoite, ACP Hemant Sawant and senior inspector Vijaykumar Panhalkar and comprising inspector Sanjay Bedwal and detection officer Tushar Sukhdeve, made inquiries in the neighbourhood and analysed CCTV footage. On tracing Singh and questioning him, they learnt that he was involved in eight break-ins in the past three months at Borivli, Kandiali, Malad West and Dindoshi. He had never been arrested earlier for any of the crimes. Singh was a resident of Kharodi village in Malad and a native of Bihar. Police discovered that Singh had paid an individual Rs 10 lakh to invest in a plot of land in Bihar and purchased a house for Rs 6 lakh in Malwani from the ill-gotten wealth. tnn

Imphal: The 48-hour office picketing enforced by the All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM), since Monday has disrupted the normal functioning of govt offices across the Naga-inhabited hill districts of Senapati, Tamenglong, Ukhrul, Chandel, Kamjong, and Noney. In Senapati district, tensions escalated on Tuesday at the district headquarters when a vehicle belonging to the superintendent of police (SP) was reportedly damaged during a confrontation. According to sources, the incident occurred after a scuffle broke out following the SP's alleged non-compliance with the protest. A heated exchange ensued between the officer and the protesters, leading to further unrest. Protesters claimed that the SP ordered a CRPF personnel to load their weapon and threatened the protesters, which, in turn, provoked them to overturn the SP's official vehicle. The picketing in Senapati district is being led by the Senapati District Students' Association (SDSA) along with its federating student unions, including the Mao Students' Union (MSU), Maram Students' Union (MKS), Poumai Naga Students' Union (PNTM), Thangal Students' Union (TAJ), and Zeliangrong Students' Union, Senapati Zone (ZSU-SZ).
