Is Emma Stone an Alien in Yorgos Lanthimos' ‘Bugonia' Trailer?
Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone are collaborating again, this time on Bugonia, an eerie, dark-comedy remake of the 2003 South Korean sci-fi film Save the Green Planet!, written and directed by Jang Joon-Hwan. The film's synopsis from Will Tracy's screenplay is as follows: 'Two conspiracy obsessed young men (Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis) kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company (Emma Stone), convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth.' More from The Hollywood Reporter Daisy Edgar-Jones to Star in New 'Sense and Sensibility' Film Adaptation Maya da Costa, Myra Molloy to Star in Hayley Kiyoko's 'Girls Like Girls' Movie Steven Flynn, Former Gramercy Pictures and Focus Features Marketing Executive, Dies at 70 In addition to Stone, Plemons and Delbis, Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone round out the cast. The trailer is equal parts unsettling, outlandish and zany. Although its veneer is sheer absurdity, the film's essence seems to be a dark commentary on economic disparity. While it's unclear is Stone's character is actually an alien, she appears like an unbothered Queen Bee, unfazed by the struggling working class. The English-language version of the Korean film was developed by Miky Lee's CJ ENM with Eddington writer-director Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen at Square Peg. Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe are producing for Element Pictures along with Lanthimos, Aster, Knudsen, Stone and Lee and Jerry Kyoungboum Ko for CJ ENM. Stone has worked with Lanthimos on The Favourite, Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness, which also starred Plemons. Universal Pictures will release Bugonia internationally, excluding Korea, where CJ ENM will handle the local release. Focus Features will release Bugonia in select theaters in the U.S. on Oct. 24, followed by a wide expansion on Oct. 31. Yorgos Lanthimos drops trailer for new film Bugonia starring Emma Stone; fans call it ‘Don't Look Up on ayahuasca'
Jun 29, 2025 11:44 PM IST The first trailer for Bugonia has officially landed, and it's every bit as bizarre as fans of Yorgos Lanthimos might expect. Reuniting once again with muse Emma Stone, the Oscar-winning filmmaker returns with a surreal sci-fi comedy that also stars Jesse Plemons, Alicia Silverstone, and Stavros Halkias. Emma Stone Based on the 2003 cult South Korean film Save the Green Planet!, Bugonia follows two conspiracy-obsessed men who kidnap a high-powered CEO, convinced she's actually a hostile alien in disguise. Emma Stone plays that CEO. With Lanthimos directing and Succession writer Will Tracy penning the script, the film promises a mix of dark comedy, sharp satire, and existential dread. The response had been more than positive on social media. 'Yorgos really found Emma Stone and was like 'that's it, she will be my lead actress for the rest of the movies I make,'' joked one fan. 'Emma Stone AND Jesse Plemons? I am in! They need to stop making Jesse play weird characters,' said one user. Another added, 'Whoever does his colour grading is top-tier.' Others were intrigued by the genre-blurring visuals: 'This feels like Don't Look Up if it did ayahuasca.' One more comment read, 'Looks like another episode from Black Mirror.' For fans of the Stone-Lanthimos duo, this feels like a must-watch. As one user put it: 'Love the fact Lanthimos and Emma Stone drop a movie every year. I'll never get tired of it. Proper cinema.' With Bugonia, Lanthimos continues to blur the lines between the absurd and the profound — and audiences can't wait to see how far he's willing to go this time.

Emma Stone is kidnapped by Jesse Plemons in trailer for ‘Bugonia,' their latest film with Yorgos Lanthimos
By the looks of the first trailer for 'Bugonia,' Emma Stone's latest collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos will be just as brilliantly bizarre as its predecessors. 'Bugonia,' an English-language remake of the South Korean sci-fi comedy 'Save the Green Planet!,' follows two conspiracy theorists who believe Stone's high-powered chief executive character is an alien planning to destroy planet Earth — so they kidnap her. Stone and Lanthimos have previously worked together on 'The Favourite' (2018), 'Poor Things' (2023) and 'Kinds of Kindness' (2024). 'Bugonia' marks their third consecutive film in three years. The trailer — released Thursday by Focus Features — opens with a voiceover, a metaphor and a shot of a beehive. 'The workers gather pollen for the queen,' Jesse Plemons, who worked with Lanthimos and Stone in 'Kinds of Kindness,' says as the trailer cuts to Stone's swaggering CEO. After a quippy kidnapping montage with Plemons and Aidan Delbis' characters set to Green Day's 'Basket Case,' Stone is shown lying unconscious in a bed. Jarring chords alternate with action-packed footage of fist fights and police chases, all framed in Lanthimos' quintessential style. 'How can you tell she's an alien?' Delbis asks. Plemons replies, 'Well, the signs are obvious.' The conspiracy theory — and the truth about the CEO's extraterrestrial status — remain anything but obvious in this initial teaser; fans will have to wait for the film's release. 'Bugonia' is set for a limited run on Oct. 24 before expanding wide Oct. 31. Stavros Halkias and Alicia Silverstone round out the cast.
