PSL finally announces new dates for the playoffs

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has officially announced new dates for the relegation/promotion playoffs. The three-team mini-tournament was initially scheduled to get underway on 27 May but the league had to postpone it. And this was due to unresolved issues in the Motsepe Foundation Championship involving Durban City, JDR Stars and Cape Town Spurs. Both JDR Stars and Cape Town Spurs accused champions Durban City of fielding Saziso Magawana, claiming he was not properly registered. However, their cases were dismissed last, and thus, paving way for Durban City to be crowned champions. Now, the ruling also meant both Orbit College and Casric Stars were to play in the playoffs alongside Cape Town City. Of course, Cape Town City are disappointed with the PSL that the game between SuperSport United and Golden Arrows had to be replayed after the season had 'officially' concluded. Nonetheless, they have since accepted their fate and are gearing up for the playoffs to try and retain their Betway Premiership status. PSL confirms relegation/promotion playoffs dates. Western Cape without a PSL team? It could happen!

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has confirmed the dates for the Betway Premiership promotion-relegation playoff matches. The playoffs were set to kick off towards the end of May, with two Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) clubs Orbit College and Casric Stars, who finished second and third, to compete against Cape Town City FC, who finished 15th in the Betway Premiership. However, that was put on hold after JDR Stars and Cape Town Spurs' case against MFC winners Durban City after they protested the eligibility of Saziso Magawana. Meanwhile, Cape Town City FC also lodged a formal objection with the PSL after their decision to resume the match between SuperSport United and Golden Arrows in the second half, three months after it was called off. However, he Citizens lost the arbitration on Wednesday with the PSL subsequently confirming the fixtures. As a reminder, Durban City will replace Royal AM in the Betway Premiership next season, with the winner of the Cape Town City FC-Orbit College-Casric Stars round robin to stay – or join – the top flight in 2025/26. Should Cape Town City FC be relegated, the Western Cape won't have a single club among the Top 16. The Citizens won seven, drew six and lost 15 of their 28 matches this season. They scored a league-low 15 goals and conceded 31. Wednesday, 11 June: Casric Stars vs Orbit College Saturday, 14 June: Cape Town City FC vs Casric Stars Wednesday, 18 June: Orbit College vs Cape Town City FC Saturday, 21 June: Orbit College vs Casric Stars Wednesday, 25 June: Casric Stars vs Cape Town City FC Saturday, 28 June: Cape Town City FC vs Orbit College Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 Subscribe to The South African website's newsletters and follow us on WhatsApp, Facebook, X and Bluesky for the latest news.

‘Humiliated' Kadodia awaits PSL to confirm Durban City's promotion

After the protests against Durban City were dismissed on Monday and the club officially promoted to the Betway Premiership, chair Farook Kadodia says he has never endured such humiliation in his administrative career as being denied the trophy in the final day. City are finally the official champions of the Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) after an arbitration dismissed two cases against them. The trophy and prize money were not presented to the Durban club after they clinched the title in the final game with a 1-0 win against Cape Town Spurs at Athlone Stadium on May 18 that also relegated their opposition. The Premier Soccer League (PSL) said then a trophy would not be presented pending cases brought by JDR Stars and Spurs over the alleged improper registration of winger Saziso Magawana by the KwaZulu-Natal team.

PSL promotion/relegation play-off drama set to begin with Citizens still favourites

Interim Cape Town Ciy coach Diogo Peral has a handful of upcoming matches to save the club's elite status during the PSL promotion/relegation play-offs. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix The Motsepe Foundation Championship encountered an unexpected hurdle when newly crowned champions Durban City were momentarily denied their spot at the summit, due to an ongoing case involving the alleged improper registration of a player earlier in the season. This matter forced the PSL to delay City's title celebrations, as a guilty verdict would have carried major consequences that could have reshaped the league's final standings. However, the club was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing and the player in question, Saziso Magawana was confirmed to have been transferred and registered properly. With that chapter now closed, all attention now turns to the highly anticipated PSL promotional/relegation play-offs, set to start next Wednesday between Casric Stars and Orbit College in KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga. Here, Obakeng Meletse takes a look at the three clubs involved, which also includes Cape Town City, and assesses their chances heading into the mini-tournament. Video Player is loading. Reflecting on their inconsistent run in the 2024/25 campaign, they'll be left ruing the many missed chances, especially after losing more than half of their matches this past season. The appointment of Diogo Peral, supported by assistants Roger de Sa and Lebogang Manyama, has not delivered the intended turnaround. A side that ended the 2023/24 season in a respectable fifth place, has now found themselves in a desperate battle to avoid losing their top-flight status. Still, there is reason for optimism. City picked up a valuable four points from their final two matches, which gave them hope all the way to the closing moments of the season. Peral and his team will aim to build on that late surge and carry some momentum into the play-offs. Their opening match of the mini-tournament is next week Saturday in Cape Town against Stars. Orbit College The Rustenburg-based club were massively improved this season. From a ninth-place finish in the 2023/24 campaign, to ending just five points behind eventual champions Durban City, their rise has been impressive. The College side will be eager to maintain the form that has turned them from mid-table competitors into serious contenders for the title and a place in the top flight. They'll face a tough test from City and a Stars sides they failed to beat in both encounters this season. There is very little margin for error, and they'll know that these chances don't come around often and this could be their best opportunity in years to secure a place in the Betway Premiership.
