Cape Town Spurs plot return by buying Pretoria Callies' status

Cape Town Spurs have dramatically dropped their High Court challenge against Durban City FC, ending a tense legal fight over promotion and relegation in South African football. However, the Urban Warriors refused to accept their relegation fate and are now attempting to secure a return to the Motsepe Foundation Championship by purchasing Pretoria Callies' status. ADVERTISEMENT Durban City secure promotion Spurs had taken legal action after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Durban City in their final Motsepe Foundation Championship fixture. They played the match under protest, claiming that Durban City's midfielder, Saziso Magawana, was improperly registered. Despite Spurs' objections, Durban City clinched automatic promotion to the Betway Premiership. The PSL delayed the trophy handover due to the ongoing legal dispute, but once the High Court ruled in favour of Durban City, they officially received the NFD trophy at the SuperSport TV studios over a week ago. PSL and SAFA rule against Spurs Before turning to the High Court, Spurs had already lost their case before the PSL's Dispute Resolution Chamber, led by Raymond Hack. The chamber dismissed their appeal and ordered the Cape club to pay legal costs. Still unsatisfied, Spurs escalated the issue to SAFA arbitration. However, multiple arbitrators stepped aside from the case, and senior counsel Hilton Epstein SC eventually ruled in favour of Durban City and Saziso Magawana. ADVERTISEMENT Spurs hoped the outcome would see Durban City docked points, a decision that would have secured Spurs' place in the Championship. But those hopes were crushed. Spurs eye Callies in desperate bid to stay up Following their failed legal efforts, Cape Town Spurs have now withdrawn their High Court case. But rather than accept a place in the ABC Motsepe League, the third tier of South African football. They are seeking an alternative route back into the NFD. 'They [Cape Town Spurs] are trying to buy the status of Callies. And you saw the post yesterday about a countdown on their page. Ya, they are definitely trying to get back into the NFD (Motsepe Foundation Championship),' a source revealed. Pretoria Callies, who finished 11th and six points above Spurs, could now become the key to Spurs' future in the first division. Will Cape Town Spurs buy Pretoria Callies? A coveted spot in the Betway Premiership will be at stake when both NFD Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) teams rekindle their rivalry. Despite the extended delay before the mini-tournament gets underway, the intensity and significance remain undiminished. Durban City secured promotion to the top flight, and although their celebrations were put on hold due to an ongoing investigation into the registration of former Marumo Gallants midfielder Saziso Magawana, they were on Tuesday officially crowned and began their top-flight journey. In contrast, Cape Town City face the threat of relegation and will be the third side competing to retain their place in the Premiership after a disappointing campaign that left them 15th on the table. 🚨 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐌𝐄𝐃: 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐒𝐋 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐲-𝐨𝐟𝐟 𝐟𝐢𝐱𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 🚨 — Official PSL (@OfficialPSL) June 5, 2025 Video Player is loading. 'The appointment of coach Mthombeni has been key. He is one coach who is able to motivate players because sometimes it's not about getting players fit because they already have that, but it's about giving them hope and keeping them motivated, and that is what he has been doing. 'The boys are happy, and they want to do well for the team. PSL finally announces new dates for the playoffs

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has officially announced new dates for the relegation/promotion playoffs. The three-team mini-tournament was initially scheduled to get underway on 27 May but the league had to postpone it. And this was due to unresolved issues in the Motsepe Foundation Championship involving Durban City, JDR Stars and Cape Town Spurs. Both JDR Stars and Cape Town Spurs accused champions Durban City of fielding Saziso Magawana, claiming he was not properly registered. However, their cases were dismissed last, and thus, paving way for Durban City to be crowned champions. Now, the ruling also meant both Orbit College and Casric Stars were to play in the playoffs alongside Cape Town City. Of course, Cape Town City are disappointed with the PSL that the game between SuperSport United and Golden Arrows had to be replayed after the season had 'officially' concluded. Nonetheless, they have since accepted their fate and are gearing up for the playoffs to try and retain their Betway Premiership status. PSL confirms relegation/promotion playoffs dates. Western Cape without a PSL team? It could happen!

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has confirmed the dates for the Betway Premiership promotion-relegation playoff matches. The playoffs were set to kick off towards the end of May, with two Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) clubs Orbit College and Casric Stars, who finished second and third, to compete against Cape Town City FC, who finished 15th in the Betway Premiership. However, that was put on hold after JDR Stars and Cape Town Spurs' case against MFC winners Durban City after they protested the eligibility of Saziso Magawana. Meanwhile, Cape Town City FC also lodged a formal objection with the PSL after their decision to resume the match between SuperSport United and Golden Arrows in the second half, three months after it was called off. However, he Citizens lost the arbitration on Wednesday with the PSL subsequently confirming the fixtures. As a reminder, Durban City will replace Royal AM in the Betway Premiership next season, with the winner of the Cape Town City FC-Orbit College-Casric Stars round robin to stay – or join – the top flight in 2025/26. ‘Humiliated' Kadodia awaits PSL to confirm Durban City's promotion

After the protests against Durban City were dismissed on Monday and the club officially promoted to the Betway Premiership, chair Farook Kadodia says he has never endured such humiliation in his administrative career as being denied the trophy in the final day. City are finally the official champions of the Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) after an arbitration dismissed two cases against them. The trophy and prize money were not presented to the Durban club after they clinched the title in the final game with a 1-0 win against Cape Town Spurs at Athlone Stadium on May 18 that also relegated their opposition. The Premier Soccer League (PSL) said then a trophy would not be presented pending cases brought by JDR Stars and Spurs over the alleged improper registration of winger Saziso Magawana by the KwaZulu-Natal team.
