Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport introduces signature fragrance to enhance passenger experience
In an effort to enhance the sensory experience of travellers, Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru has introduced a signature fragrance called Dancing Bamboo at Terminal 2. The scent, developed in collaboration with fragrance design firm Aéromé, is part of the airport's broader strategy to create a more calming and emotionally engaging atmosphere for passengers. Officials at Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) said the fragrance will be subtly diffused at key touch points across the terminal, including check-in and arrival zones. The aim is to ease travel-related stress and create a sense of comfort and familiarity for passengers navigating the busy terminal. 'As airports evolve into spaces that are more than just transit hubs, integrating sensory design helps create a memorable experience,' said Shalini Rao, Chief Marketing Officer, BIAL. The fragrance initiative follows other passenger-focused design elements at Terminal 2, including large green spaces and art installations. BIAL officials said the fragrance is intended to complement these visual and spatial experiences by engaging another sense — smell — and making the terminal feel more welcoming and reflective. The introduction of an olfactory signature is a first for the airport and is part of a global trend in which major airports are turning to sensory branding to influence mood and passenger perception. Many airports globally, particularly in Asia, Europe, and the United States, use scent marketing to enhance passenger experiences. For example, Singapore Changi Airport introduced its fragrance in 2016 called Changi Scent, which draws inspiration from Changi's lush gardens and Singapore's national flower, the orchid. The scent is dispensed at departure hall doors and other key areas to evoke a soothing and refreshing atmosphere amid the airport's hustle and bustle. Reed diffusers and candles of Changi Scent are also available for purchase. In the United States, San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport opened its new six-gate terminal with a spa-like fragrance in ticketing areas and baggage claim to convey a fresh, clean, and relaxing atmosphere. Similarly, Tampa International Airport in Florida has used ScentAir's Bamboo Tea fragrance, which includes notes of green bergamot, jasmine, neroli, musk, and tree moss. The scent is designed to reflect the Tampa Bay region and is dispensed in several areas to create a fresh and calming environment for passengers.
