Tamil Nadu Dalit techie hacked to death in ‘honour killing', police couple's son surrenders
A 27-year-old Dalit software engineer was hacked to death in broad daylight on Sunday in what police and family members described as a case of caste-based honour killing. The victim, Kavin Selva Ganesh, was allegedly murdered by the brother of a woman he had been in a long-term relationship with. The accused, 21-year-old S Surjith, surrendered to police shortly after allegedly attacking Kavin near a private Siddha hospital in KTC Nagar, Tirunelveli, where the woman, Subashini, works as a consultant. Surjith is the son of two police officers — sub-inspectors Saravanan and Krishnakumari — both of whom have also been named as co-accused in the case for allegedly inciting the crime and threatening Kavin in the past. Kavin, a native of Arumugamangalam in Thoothukudi district and an engineering graduate employed with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in Chennai, had maintained contact with Subashini since their school days. According to sources, their relationship was amicable but had faced escalating hostility from the woman's family, who belong to a Most Backward Class (MBC) community. Kavin's family, who belong to a Scheduled Caste (SC), say they had been threatened multiple times. On Sunday, Kavin visited KTC Nagar to consult Subashini about his grandfather's deteriorating health. There, Surjith allegedly approached him and said their parents wished to speak with him. Trusting Surjith, Kavin got on his two-wheeler and they rode towards Astalakshmi Nagar. According to Kavin's mother, S Tamizhselvi, who filed the complaint with the Palayamkottai police, Surjith stopped the vehicle abruptly and shouted at her son, demanding how he could dare love a girl from a different caste. Surjith then reportedly pulled out a sickle hidden on his back and attacked Kavin repeatedly. Eyewitnesses say Kavin attempted to flee, but was chased down and hacked to death barely 200 metres from the hospital. The police have arrested Surjith and registered a case against him and his parents under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with provisions from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 2015. CCTV footage from the crime scene has been secured, and the victim's body was sent for post-mortem at the Tirunelveli Government Hospital. Kavin's family has refused to accept his body and is demanding legal action against Surjith's parents, who they allege were instrumental in the murder. 'They objected to the relationship from the beginning and repeatedly harassed my son. Even now, they may use their positions to influence the case,' Tamizhselvi said in her complaint. Protests erupted in parts of Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts, demanding justice and the suspension of the accused police officers.

Dalit Techie In Tamil Nadu Killed By Lover's Brother Who Opposed Inter-Caste Relationship
Chennai: A 23-year-old Dalit techie from Chennai was allegedly murdered by his girlfriend's brother in Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu, today. The victim, Kavin Selvaganesh, was reportedly targeted for being in an inter-caste relationship with a woman from a different community. The accused, identified as Surjith Selvaganesh, is the son of a police officer couple. According to police sources, Surjith was opposed to his sister's relationship with Kavin and allegedly lured him on the pretext of a conversation before killing him. Kavin had travelled to Tirunelveli to visit his ailing grandfather, who was undergoing treatment at a Siddha centre, where his girlfriend also worked as a doctor. CCTV footage accessed by the police reportedly shows Surjith taking Kavin on his motorbike from outside the centre, moments before allegedly killing him. Police have filed a case of murder and have invoked provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, given the caste angle involved. The police have also registered a case against Surjith's parents, both of whom are serving police officers, amid allegations of complicity or shielding. The main accused has surrendered. A police officer told NDTV, "Surjith says he didn't approve the relationship and despite his warning, Kavin was in touch with her. Further investigation is underway". Tensions flared in the area after the incident. Locals and Kavin's relatives blocked the main road, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused and his parents. Protesters accused the police of inaction and bias, given the suspect's influential background. The police have assured that the cop couple will be arrested within 24 hours. However, Kavin's grieving family is yet to receive his body, further escalating the emotional and social fallout.

Timely justice to defence personnel, weaker sections of society must to improve their lives: J-K LG
Calling for ensuring timely justice, the LG said delay in delivering justice defeats its purpose. Sinha addressed a two-day north zone regional conference on reaffirming the constitutional vision of justice for defence personnel and tribals at SKICC. Srinagar, Jul 26 (PTI) Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha Saturday said timely justice should be ensured to defence personnel, tribals and weaker sections of the society to improve their lives and to protect their Constitutional rights. 'Jammu and Kashmir and all state legal services authorities should ensure that defence personnel, tribals and weaker sections of the society should get timely justice so that their lives improve and to protect their constitutional rights,' the LG said 'Justice should not be delayed, because delay in justice results in defeat of faith. I hope this important conference would discuss the interventions needed to make the common people aware about their constitutional rights,' he said. Constitution of India guarantees justice — social, economic and political, and one of the facets of providing justice is access to justice to all the citizens and it is to be ensured that justice reaches to the poorest of poor, who deserves it the most, he added. 'The justice system has been deeply rooted in the soul of India and played a pivotal to nation's progress. In our culture, the court is not merely an office of justice but a sacred temple of justice, dedicated to ensuring equal justice and access to the legal system for all, without discrimination,' the LG said. Sinha said his administration has taken three major initiatives in J-K to ensure ease of justice to the members of the armed forces and is committed to provide legal aid to the tribal community. He referred to the establishment of the Lieutenant Governor's Sainik Sahayta Kendra (LGSSK), a dedicated grievance redressal mechanism for personnel of the Indian Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). The initiative aims to address civilian grievances of soldiers either posted in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir or hailing from the region but serving elsewhere in India. The LGSSK is designed as a single-window Soldiers' Assistance and Liaison Cell, operating from the Civil Secretariat offices in both Jammu and Srinagar. This institutional platform will streamline the process of receiving, assessing, and resolving grievances, ensuring timely and effective support for serving soldiers. Sinha highlighted key structural reforms taken in the past few years to establish social and economic justice in Jammu Kashmir. Before 2019, he said, various Central laws including two important central legislations namely the Scheduled Tribes and other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 were not applicable to J-K. Now, these laws have become applicable and tribal community has been empowered. We are extending all constitutional guarantees and protections to the members of the tribal population including access to justice by providing free and competent legal aid to them, Sinha said. He spoke about the major initiatives taken by the J-K administration to ensure ease of justice to the members of the armed forces and reiterated its commitment to provide legal aid to the tribal community. 'Amendment has been made in J&K Legal Services Authority, Rules 2020 to include Secretary, Zila Sainik Board as member of District Legal Services Authority to provide legal aid to soldiers,' he said. On the occasion, NALSA Veer Parivar Sahayata Yojana 2025, a dedicated legal services scheme for defence personnel, ex-servicemen and their families, was launched. The scheme provides for establishing legal services clinics within Rajya and Zila Sainik Boards for rendering legal services and assistance to Veer Parivar. The event also witnessed the launch of various initiatives including Defence Personnel Case Management System; Special Samvad Legal Units for tribal communities; Legal Services support centres at Rajya Sainik Boards of all states and UTs and Zila Sainik Welfare Boards across the Districts of UT of J&K and Ladakh; Unveiling of Logo and Tribal kiosks at Leh airport; Mobile medical camp for tribal population of Ladakh.
