Do the Boston Celtics need Baylor Scheierman to step up next season?
Baylor Scheierman is entering his second season in the NBA. The Creighton product showed flashes of his playmaking and scoring ability toward the end of the Boston Celtics' 2024-25 regular season. However, he struggled when shooting the ball during his recent stretch of games at Las Vegas Summer League. With the Celtics in the early stages of a retooling process, Scheierman is expected to earn significant minutes within Joe Mazzulla's rotation. He will provide playmaking, rebounding and a three-level scoring threat off the bench. However, with that larger role and increase in minutes will come expectations to prove that he can hold his own at the NBA level. During a recent episode of the "How 'Bout Them Celtics?" podcast, hosts Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance broke down why Scheierman must take a developmental leap in the upcoming season. The duo also discussed what the Celtics could do if Scheierman continues to struggle from the field between the start of the season and the February 2026 trade deadline. Has Baylor Scheierman earned a bigger role with the Boston Celtics?
Baylor Scheierman heads into the 2025-26 NBA season with an opportunity to cement himself as a core part of Joe Mazzulla's rotation. The sophomore forward may find himself thrust into a bigger role as the Boston Celtics continue to retool the roster and push their young prospects to see what they're capable of. Fortunately for the Celtics, they got a closer look at what Scheierman brings to the table during the 2025 NBA Las Vegas Summer League, where he thrived as a ball-handler, playmaker, and help defender, but struggled when shooting the basketball. Fortunately for Scheierman, he won't be tasked with taking such a high volume of shots at the NBA level. If you're interested in what Scheierman did well during his time in Las Vegas, the Tomasz Kordylewski YouTube channel has uploaded a highlight reel of the sophomore forward's best moments. From flashy passes, lobs and strong rebounds to a tight dribble and solid defensive instincts, Scheierman showcased a wide range of skills. Baylor Scheierman, Charles Bassey shine in Celtics 94-81 Summer League win over Knicks
The Summer League Celtics are now 2-0 after an impressive win over the New York Knicks in Las Vegas on Sunday, July 13. Baylor Scheierman set the tone, with the sophomore forward registering 13 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists and 3 steals. However, Scheierman's perimeter struggles limited his overall impact, as he went 1-of-7 from deep. Scheierman wasn't the only member of the Celtics to impress, as Charles Bassey continued his push for an NBA contract with another impactful outing. The former Philadelphia 76ers and San Antonio Spurs big man put up 22 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, registered 2 steals and swatted away three shots. If he keeps this up, he could force himself into Boston's frontcourt rotation for next season. Interestingly, first-round pick Hugo Gonzalez didn't take part in the game, after impressing against the Memphis Grizzlies earlier in the week. In his absence, Jalen Bridges took the opportunity to shine, going 6-for-10 from the field for 16 points and 5 rebounds. Jordan Walsh's performance left a lot to be desired, as for the second game running, he didn't display his defensive upside and struggled when shooting the ball, going 2-for-10 from the field and 1-for-6 from deep. Rookie big man Amari Williams looks good, but not great, and failed to make much of an impact on the box score. However, Kenny Lofton Jr. was making his presence felt off the bench with 9 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists. He almost had a 3-point shot, too, if only for his foot being on the line. Of course, all eyes were likely on Max Shulga as the late second-round pick continues to try and prove himself at the next level. He certainly brings a ton of energy, but needs to slow down in order to better pick his spots and passes. Overall, the Summer League Celtics were impressive on both sides of the floor and played with hustle, effort and intensity. Now, they will look to make it three games unbeaten when they face the Miami Heat on Monday, July 14 at 8:00 PM ET.

Jalen Bridges impresses, Baylor Scheierman shows range, and other Celtics thoughts after Las Vegas win over Knicks
'I'd say the defensive pressure was probably what helped our offense the most,' coach Matt Reynolds said. 'I think our offense kind of sputtered a little bit in the halfcourt but we had 14 steals. That kind of triggered the fast breaks, whether it be a corner three, dunk, lob, whatever.' Observations from the game: ⋅ Jalen Bridges scored 16 points after being added to the starting lineup. The 6-foot-8 forward was a two-way contract player for the Suns last season and had some promising moments on Sunday. In a stretch of about four minutes, he hit a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer, converted a tough reverse layup, and made a driving hook shot. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Then in the third quarter, he showed off his athleticism on defense, rising to gobble up a Knicks alley-oop attempt that ignited a fast break and led to a successful Jordan Walsh alley-oop at the other end. Advertisement 'I saw a guy that's ready to play,' Reynolds said. 'It's not easy to do that — to watch, sit on the bench, and then get inserted into the starting lineup and then just fill a role. I don't think he was out there trying to do too much. I think he does exactly what you expect him to do. He's a pro.' Advertisement This shot 🔥 — Boston Celtics (@celtics) ⋅ The Celtics' defensive pressure bothered the Knicks in the opening quarter, and Baylor Scheierman was at the center of the attack. The second-year wing had three steals in the opening quarter, including one that led to a Kendall Brown dunk. Scheierman scored or assisted on the Celtics' first 11 points, including a 3-pointer that came from the edge of the midcourt logo. He missed his next six 3-pointers, however. 'Obviously, I can't control if shots are going in or not,' Scheierman said. 'I'm shooting to make it, not to miss. I didn't shoot it well again from 3, but I impacted a lot of different areas, had a couple steals, couple offensive fouls, so being able to impact the game in whatever means necessary is a good trait to have.' Related : ⋅ Bassey followed up his 14-point, 11-rebound performance in Friday's game strong Sunday. During his first stint he registered a pair of blocks, converted a 3-point play inside, and out-muscled the Knicks for several rebounds. During one third-quarter sequence, he beat two Knicks to an offensive rebound before bulldozing to the basket for a layup. About a minute later he threw down a one-handed alley-oop. Bassey has been slowed by injuries during his four-year NBA career, but also has shown he can be a capable contributor at the highest level when healthy. Bassey said he is fully healthy, and a league source said he has piqued the interest of several teams this week. 'I think I'm auditioning for the rest of the NBA, and it's also a good opportunity for me to be a Celtic,' Bassey said. ⋅ First-round pick Hugo Gonzalez and two-way contract player Miles Norris sat out. Gonzalez's Spanish League season concluded just over two weeks ago, and on Saturday Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said that Gonzalez would likely play just one of the games of this back-to-back set. Gonzalez and Norris are expected to play Monday. Advertisement ⋅ During the regular season, Reynolds is tasked with helping the team determine whether to challenge calls. He had a strong record this past season. That is not his role with this group, of course, but old habits die hard. When Max Shulga was called for a foul after blocking a Tyler Kolek runner, Reynolds all but dashed toward the back of the bench, where the staffers were in charge of monitoring replays. They waved off Reynolds on that play, but Boston successfully challenged an out of bounds call later in the first half. Related : ⋅ The NBA's Board of Governors is scheduled to meet this week, but a league source said Sunday that the approval of Bill Chisholm's bid to purchase the Celtics is not on the agenda. The source said ownership votes rarely take place in person, and that this vote will likely take place soon, once the transaction is closed. ⋅ Newly acquired Celtics Georges Niang, Luka Garza, and Josh Minott attended Sunday's game, along with returning big man Xavier Tillman. Is Boston Celtics backup shooting guard Baylor Scheierman about to have a breakout season?
Is Boston Celtics backup shooting guard Baylor Scheierman about to have a breakout season? The Celtics made some major moves to start out their 2025 NBA offseason, dealing away vet starters Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis while letting key backup big man Luke Kornet walk in free agency to the San Antonio Spurs, opening up a ton of minutes for the team's bench mob to soak up. And with star Celtics forward Jayson Tatum out for likely all of the coming 2025-25 regular season, Boston is going to need to find scoring wherever it can find it. Scheierman in particular seems poised to see his role get much bigger for the Celtics, and famed Boston forward and now broadcaster Cedric Maxwell is expecting to see big things from the Creighton alum. Maxwell broke down his vision for Scheierman in the season ahead on a recent episode of his eponymous CLNS Media "Cedric Maxwell" podcast, breaking it down with cohost John Zannis.
