Dubai Culture Welcomes Summer with 18 Creative and Enriching ‘School of Life' Sessions
Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) is launching a fresh season of community workshops through its 'School of Life' project, part of Dubai's Quality of Life Strategy. Under the theme 'Hello Summer', 18 interactive sessions will be held in June across the programme's Impact Track and creative clubs. These activities invite Dubai Public Library visitors to develop new skills and enjoy a vibrant calendar of summer month, Al Mankhool Public Library will host the Japanese Kakigori workshop, where attendees can learn how to prepare kakigōri, the soft Japanese shaved ice dessert, using seasonal flavours and homemade syrups. This hands-on experience also offers a window into Japanese culture, making it a memorable summer treat. As part of the Calligraphy Club, the library will feature the 'Baybayin Calligraphy on Shell' class, led by Gino Banola, who will introduce Filipino heritage and the art of painting on shells using the ancient Baybayin script. Meanwhile, Hatta Public Library will present a 'Fruit Carving Workshop' with Nada Saeed Kattan, under the Health & Nutrition Club, teaching participants how to transform fruit into playful shapes and edible works of Safa Art & Design Library will host Art Club activities for adults and children. In 'From Idea to Creation: An Artistic Journey in Colour', Benedicte Gimonnet guides learners through the process of starting an art project, including how to select colours that capture their vision. In 'Painting on Tote Bags,' Abeer Al Edani helps attendees turn personal memories into unique keepsakes by decorating tote bags. Medaf Creative Studio will offer two sessions for kids: one focused on designing their own fishbowls, and another on painting with gold leaves. The Book Club's 'Travelling Memoirs' will invite visitors to explore how journeys, whether real or imagined, can serve as a means of escape, self-discovery, and personal transformation through a discussion of travel memoirs, road trip fiction, and stories of change. As part of the Impact Track's Calligraphy Club, Mohammad Altamimi will lead Ruq'ah classes, focusing on mastering Arabic letter formation using traditional tools, covering characters such as Meem (م), Ya (ي), Hamzah (ء), Ayn (ع), and Haa (ح). The Photography Club wraps up the month with practical training on presenting images professionally and building confidence in sharing work, culminating in a public exhibition of participants' photographs.

K Vasuki's memoir ‘School of Life' released
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: K Vasuki, secretary of the labour department, released her latest book 'School of Life', a personal and philosophical exploration of the challenges and realisations that have shaped her life and career. The book was released by handing over a copy to retired SBI manager Thomas Bharat Govind and Aneesh V, representing the task force volunteers who contributed significantly to relief efforts during the 2018 Kerala floods, when Vasuki was serving as the district collector. The event was held at Kesari Hall. In School of Life, Vasuki draws from over four decades of personal and professional experiences, taking readers on an introspective journey. The book reflects on universal questions such as the purpose of life, the pursuit of happiness and the pressures of modern consumerist living. It urges a shift towards holistic health, well-being, and sustainable living. Speaking at the launch, Vasuki shared how her journey from a young girl with dreams to a civil servant, mother, and yoga practitioner has led her to question the current trajectory of human life. 'This book is my first step toward inspiring transformative action and finding fellow travellers for this journey,' she added. The event was attended by KUWJ district president Shiller Stephen, secretary Anupama G Nair, former secretary Suresh Vellimangalam and Vasuki's husband and IAS officer S Karthikeyan.

School of Life Projects Triumph at Beijing Science Competition
Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) has announced the remarkable achievements of students from the STEM Club—a key part of the School of Life project under the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy—at the 44th Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition (BYSCC). The participants won three silver medals and placed second globally at Asia's leading youth innovation event. The results reflect Dubai Culture's commitment to empowering future generations and nurturing their capabilities, while reinforcing the emirate's position as a global centre for culture, an incubator for creativity, and a thriving hub for talent. This success followed an intensive eight-week training programme at Al Twar Public Library, delivered under the Impact Track, one of the core educational pathways within the STEM Club. Guided by expert mentors from Baseet, students developed revolutionary, research-driven technology projects that qualified for international competition. The winning entries featured three innovative solutions that use artificial intelligence (AI) to tackle urgent environmental and societal challenges. Under the mentorship of Eng Mohamed Amarneh, students Adam Serhan, Sultan Ahmed Almarzooqi, Mohammed Ahmed Al Mansoori, and Zynah Mansoor submitted the 'AI-Powered UAV System for Rapid Victim Detection in Natural Disasters,' which uses advanced AI to locate victims quickly and accurately during emergencies, thereby accelerating response efforts. Meanwhile, supervised by Eng Anas Habboub, participants Saif Omar, Sarah Ali Majdalawi, Mohamed Hisham, Mohamed Salah, and Mohamed Yousef created the 'Intelligent Irrigation and Filtration System for Enhanced Sustainability in Precision Agriculture,' designed to optimise water usage by monitoring soil moisture and purifying water through integrated technologies. The third project, the 'AI-powered Smart Waste Sorting Bin for Sustainable Waste Management,' was made by Matteo Angelo Coo Tolentino, Aarav Agarwal, Amin Wahby, Joumanah Al Aidarous, Hayam Khalfan, and Alya Saif Ahmed Saeed under Eng Reem Siripl and Eng Nael Elashi. It automatically sorts waste to support efficient recycling and foster sustainable community practices. Commenting on the achievement, Eiman Al Hammadi, Manager of the Libraries Affairs Section at Dubai Culture, said: 'This accomplishment embodies our ongoing investment in young talent and reinforces the vision of the School of Life as a dynamic model that transforms public libraries into vibrant community spaces. By merging knowledge with technology, these initiatives help develop cultural, creative, and life skills across generations. The Impact Track, which combines theoretical learning with hands-on experience, equips young innovators to represent the UAE on international platforms.' The UAE delegation to BYSCC 2025 included students from the American School of Creative Science, the International School of Choueifat, and Hemaya Schools. Their achievements are the product of collaborative efforts and dedicated mentorship, and they reflect the immense potential of the nation's youth.

Through its innovative clubs and tracks, the initiative, which falls under the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy, will host 37 public sessions focusing on developing life and creative skills, training participants in voice-over techniques, photography and impactful content creation, while also equipping them with skills to achieve psychological and physical balance, learn about enterprise resource planning, and more. This contributes to creating a broad space for creativity and the exchange of ideas and experiences. The Reporters Training & Media Production Studio will host a voice-over workshop for adults who can learn voice control techniques and how to transform their voices into powerful tools for expression, impact, and delivering messages in an engaging and innovative way. The Junction in Alserkal Avenue is offering the 'Mastering Body Language' workshop, teaching to utilise body language to enhance non-verbal articulation and create a strong impression via posture and facial expressions to ensure comprehensive and persuasive communication. Under the Wellness and Nutrition Club, families visiting Hatta Public Library can join Nada Kattan's pickle-making workshop, learning the technique of pickling fresh vegetables, exploring different flavours and techniques, while in Al Safa Art & Design Library, the Pilates Academy will offer a ladies-only Pilates class focused on enhancing strength and flexibility. As part of the Creative Impact Track, Al Safa Art & Design Library will host two Ruq'ah Calligraphy workshops by Mohammad Altamimi, instructing in the technical fundamentals of properly shaping Ruq'ah script letters and connecting them in artistic contexts. The session will cover pen handling, proper posture, and the tools used to master the Ruq'ah script, concluding with a showcase of the learners' works at the Dubai Calligraphy Biennale that is taking place from 24 November to 19 December 2025. Also under the Creative Impact Track, the library has the Photography and Cinema Club's Professional Photography Publishing session by Reporters and Canon, aiming to empower those taking part to develop their skills in digital content by learning professional photography techniques and producing impactfully using different tools.
