Manufacturer 3M warned over chemicals at quarry
The chemical conglomerate behind Post-it notes and Scotch-Brite has been handed a yellow card over "significant contamination" from historic toxic chemicals found in a quarry it leased. PFAS soil, sediment, groundwater and surface water have been found across a 100-hectare area of the inactive Brogans Creek lime quarry northwest of the Blue Mountains, the NSW Environment Protection Authority says. The authority has for the first time issued a clean-up notice and took regulatory action against 3M and its local Australian arm. "This is a significant moment for the EPA and one that represents an important milestone in our efforts to address legacy environmental harm," Operations Director David Gathercole said. "Though this is only the first step ... 3M has so far been co-operative voluntarily offering to conduct investigation to better understand the extent and legacy of PFAS contamination." PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a group of 15,000 highly toxic, synthetic chemicals used for their resistance to heat, stains and grease. They have been dubbed "forever chemicals" because they break down extremely slowly. Emerging evidence has linked some PFAS substances to cancer, leading to tighter regulation of the substances, particularly in drinking water. The quarry, in the state's central west, was historically used by 3M to test PFAS-containing firefighting foam. The authority said while "the scale of the onsite contamination is significant", there is limited human exposure because of the remoteness of the site. However, it found some of the chemicals eight kilometres downstream in the Capertee River within a national park. They were considered to be above the national drinking guidelines. A sign has been erected warning park users to not drink river water. But recreational use including swimming remains safe, the authority said. Under the clean-up notice, 3M Australia has 60 days to submit a detailed plan to manage PFAS pollution. The company has been contacted for a comment. 30 Walmart Cleaning Items That Work Fast And Work Well
A bottle of The Pink Stuff's Miracle multipurpose cleaner because if you're familiar with The Pink Stuff's cleaning paste, then you KNOW how great this brand's stuff is at making your house sparkle. (And doin' it fast.) Promising review: "If I could give this stuff 10 stars, I would. Hands-down, The Pink Stuff is the best cleaner ever. I started getting it before it came to the US, and was so excited to see Walmart carrying it. I got rid of all my other cleaners except this stuff, and it's awesome. Every last one of these cleaners is great. If you get the brush, they have to go with the cleaner; you won't ever have to scrub anything again. If you haven't tried it, you don't know what you're missing." —ZuraGailPrice: $4.86 A Scrubbing Bubbles toilet cleaning stamp I've used for literal years because I like my cleaning efforts to last until the next hyper-fixation cleaning phase. These things seriously ~stick around~ and help keep your bowl clean for so long. Clean once, stamp once, and forget about it for a good month or so. (Sometimes I'm wild and stamp twice because it's fun, OK?) Promising reviews: "These work!! Toilet stays cleaner longer. When the gel disappears, I do a quick scrub and press on a new gel stamp. Easy! Years ago, I used the type of product you hang or drop into the tank. Those softened the rubber flapper, causing water loss. These go into the toilet bowl instead of the tank, so there isn't any damage to the flapper seal." —sewcountry"I love that I can put one pod at the water line, and that's it for one week. It keeps my bowl clean and smelling fresh for a week and saves me the extra work of cleaning the bowl several times during the week." —PhillipPrice: $13.87 A Scotch-Brite shower and tub scrubber with an extendable handle if the biggest barrier to finally giving your tub a good rub-a-dub-dub is those pesky corners and hard-to-reach spots. This will have your shower shining and your back breathing a big sigh of relief in no time. Promising review: "Good extension handle. The head of the scrubber can get into corners well, and it rinses out well. I like that I can tie a microfiber cloth to it to pick up the soap and dirt. Great to work with." —LizPrice: $10.25 A compact Yamazaki Home bathroom organizer to stash your toilet paper, brush, and any other miscellany you'd rather keep out of sight and mind. It's designed to be able to turn and face the wall and totally conceal your stuff, so no need to constantly be tidying up because you can simply ~twirl it away~ and it's stored safely and neatly. Price: $60 (available in white and black) A 2-in-1 vacuum and mop robot cleaner that you can control with the click of a phone app to ensure your floors get sparkly clean while you anything else. Promising review: "It is so cute running around the house, scaring the cats and causing the dog to bark! After cleaning your floors, they will immediately start collecting dust and hair! You can run this in the morning while you drink your coffee and catch up on yourself. KEEPS YOUR FLOORS NICE in between serious cleanings!" —NoraHPrice: $101.98 (originally $359.99) A cooktop cleaner kit if your stove is a little crusty from all that cooking you've been doing. This works for all types of stovetops, no matter if you have gas, induction, or electric, so get to scrubbing and wow yourself with how quickly your kitchen goes from "meh" to "ah." This kit includes cleaning cream, a scrubbing pad, and a scraper, so you've got everything you need to wipe this task off your to-do list. Promising review: "I was mad about having to get the whole kit when all I wanted was the scrubber, but I love the scrubber as much as I thought I would and will buy refills of the red scrubber pads for the handle. I had previously used a 4-inch glass scraper, which got almost everything, and this scrubber got the rest really fast and easy." —JenniferPrice: $7.36 A bleach-free, no-scrub weekly shower spray so you can kiss mildew and that weird stain beneath your shampoo bottles goodbye with a spray-it-and-leave-it ease that will have you wishing you could spray your whole house with this stuff. This TikTok of the Wet and Forget shower cleaner will make you see why it's one of the easiest ways to clean your review: "This is the best and easiest solution I have found to cleaning my shower. Just spray it on when you finish showering, leave it until the next day, and rinse it before you shower. I especially like the way it cleans the residue off the glass doors. It has a light vanilla scent. Perfect." —SusanPrice: $19.98 A foaming garbage disposal cleaner that's a total drop-and-go situation and will clean your disposal blades, sidewalls, and beneath the splashguard, ensuring your kitchen smells ~amazing~ with seriously minimal effort. Wanna see how it works? Check out the Glisten garbage disposer foaming cleaner TikTok here!Promising review: "I love the clean, fresh, citrusy scent of my sink after using one of these packets. I use one every Saturday to keep my sink clean and fresh all week. It has a great foam to it that will definitely bring up any gunk you might have. Easy to use, takes like 20 seconds." —DonnaPrice: $3.79 for a four-pack A set of Mr. Clean Magic Erasers because some messes need the big guns, and for that, we call Mr. Clean. (That man must work out almost as much as these sponges do after my kid has finished an arts and crafts day at the kitchen table.) Promising review: "These are the best cleaning product I ever purchased! I couldn't believe how clean everything was after I used them. I have arthritis in my hands so cleaning and scrubbing isn't as easy as it once was, just a gentle swipe and grime and dirt are gone, that simple. Definitely try them." —AJPrice: $8.94 for a seven-pack A bottle of Dawn Powerwash for anyone who loves the ~idea~ of "just let it soak" but in practice just wants to get those dirty dishes out of their sink ASAP. This spray is just as easy as soaking, but twice as fast. I use this all the time and would like to note that it also smells nice (lemon-scented!), which is NOT always the case with high-powered soaps! Promising review: "Dawn Platinum Powerwash is a total game-changer in the kitchen. I wasn't sure what to expect from a spray-on dish soap, but now I can't imagine going back to regular liquid soap. The spray nozzle gives perfect coverage, and it instantly starts cutting through grease and stuck-on food — no soaking required. It's incredibly convenient for quick cleanups and works great on everything from pots and pans to delicate glassware. I love that you just spray, wipe, and rinse. Plus, it smells fresh and clean without being overpowering. A little goes a long way, and it makes the whole dishwashing process faster and easier. This is one of those products that actually lives up to the hype. Highly recommend for anyone who's tired of scrubbing or just wants to save time in the kitchen!" —TedPrice: $4.94 An O-Cedar spin mop and bucket I can personally attest has made mopping 99% less terrible. My least fave part was wringing out the mop head because even with the "easy wring" ones, I STILL HAD TO TOUCH THE GROSS ICK WATER. No more with this thing. It's easily the best cleaning money I spent last year. Promising review: "This mop is incredible for floors and walls, I love the clean water option, and the mop head is very easy to throw in the washing machine. I had a little bit of an issue with the handle staying 'locked' open, but I redid the locks, and it works great now! I have vinyl plank flooring, and love how well it cleans." —BaileyPrice: $49.96 A chainmail scrubber and pan scraper any cast iron enthusiast will tell you is the bee's knees for taking care of your skillet or pot without losing your hard-won seasoning. I recommend." —LayciPrice: $5.97 An odor-eliminating spray for those spots from kids or pets or snack-dropping friends that just smell wonky. I don't need my cute candle smells to clash with "eau de Cheez-it," thanks. Promising review: "This stuff is the BEST!! It works great on stains as well as odors. I have a cat who has some physical problems and sometimes can't get to the litter box. This was leaving stains on my carpet. This is the first and only product that got the stains and smell out! It has a nice fresh clean scent." —VLPrice: $17.94 A four-piece Swiffer dusting kit so that even if you're not 10-feet tall, you can still clean those dusty corners, fan blades, and furniture tops with a quick swippity-swipe. The cleaning power of this machine left the carpet stain and odor-free. Granted, it took a little elbow grease and persistence, but the outcome was beyond my expectations. I would definitely recommend this machine for its performance, but also for its great price point." —LauraPrice: $87.94 A rubber squeegee brush to scrape up your four-legged bestie's shedding needed if your pet has the dreaded summer coat blowout that makes your house resemble a fur factory more than a home. Not to mention, the other end works as a squeegee to take care of any liquid spills! Promising review: "Wow! I was a little skeptical on the dog hair and couldn't believe how well this worked. Once you get the right angle it pulls up anything and the dust that is trapped. The carpet looks brand-new. 🤩" —ChristinePrice: $10.59 A fume-free oven cleaner spray, because who has the time and energy to scrub for days when you can just spritz and wipe your burned cheese pizza remnants away? 3M India posts smaller third-quarter profit as inflation pressures margins
Feb 6 (Reuters) - Diversified products maker 3M India ( opens new tab reported a 16% fall in its third-quarter profit on Friday, as inflationary pressures pushed costs higher, hurting margins. The company, whose products range from "Post-it" notes to power tools, said its profit after tax fell to 1.14 billion rupees ($13.05 million) for the quarter ended December 31, compared to 1.35 billion rupees a year ago. India's consumer goods makers have grappled with high inflation, which spiked to 6.21% in October and remained above 5% through December, driving up the cost of key raw materials. 3M reported a 23% increase in the cost of raw materials and a 13% rise in total expenses for the quarter. The company's earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) margins contracted by 12% compared to the previous year, negatively impacting its profitability. However, the Scotch-Brite scrub maker has continuously raised prices across its product range in recent quarters to counter inflationary pressures, which helped revenue to grow. It's transportation and electronics segment, which includes automotive parts, lighting solutions, and wires and cables, posted a 10% increase in revenue, driving the company's total revenue up 8% to 10.9 billion rupees. 3M India, the Indian arm of the U.S.-based industrial conglomerate 3M (MMM.N), opens new tab, said its revenue from safety and industrial segment, with products like face shields and construction hats, posted a 1.4% revenue fall. Shares of the company fell 2% after posting results.
