NEW JERSEY TRANSIT TEAMSTERS LAUNCH FIRST STRIKE AT THE RAILROAD IN 42 YEARS
450 BLET Members to Strike at Nation's Third Largest Commuter Railroad NEWARK, N.J., May 15, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Tomorrow morning, 450 locomotive engineers at New Jersey Transit (NJT) will launch the first strike at the railroad since 1983. The railroaders are represented by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET) of the Teamsters Rail Conference. "Railroad executives had every opportunity to reach a fair deal, but these fucking clowns chose to waste money on decorating their lavish penthouse offices. New Jersey Transit could have avoided this strike, but they blew it," said Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien. "Rail Teamsters are the best in the business and deserve better than to be low-balled and disrespected." Management refuses to offer a contract that pays BLET members the industry standard. NJT locomotive engineers have gone without a raise since their contract became amendable in 2019. Meanwhile, NJT spent half-a-billion dollars on an unnecessary new headquarters –– far exceeding what it would cost to pay their workers fairly. "This strike could be over in an instant if NJT offers a fair contract," said Mark Wallace, President of the BLET and the Teamsters Rail Conference. "Our members at NJT only want to be paid the same as engineers who work for other commuter railroads that share the same train platforms. NJT can afford it. We will hold the line for as long as it takes." Founded in 1903, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters represents over 1.3 million hardworking people in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. TEAMSTERS STATEMENT ON FEDERAL FILM TAX INCENTIVES
WASHINGTON, May 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a statement from Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien and Teamsters Motion Picture Division Director Lindsay Dougherty on the recent proposal to establish federal film tax incentives: "Shamefully it is the norm today for American film and TV studios to outsource the union jobs that build their industry, gutting crews here at home for the sake of their bottom line. This standard in Hollywood fuels corporate greed, stripping meaningful work out of California and other major production locations nationwide. If these studios are incapable of looking beyond their own balance sheets and bonus schedules, we have no choice but to create new opportunities to incentivize the return of this work to American shores. "A federal film tax credit is long overdue. We must rebuild good union jobs in America and stop the bleeding of studios sending American labor overseas. "The Teamsters thank President Trump for putting American workers first, and we call on Congress to act swiftly to pass a budget bill that supports the working families who call this industry home. "The Teamsters have been leading the fight to restore the dignity of labor to Hollywood. But we need the help of our elected officials to finally make it a reality. It's time to pass a federal film tax credit. And the Teamsters will remember who, and who did not, stand with labor at this critical moment." Generate Key Takeaways Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien and Teamsters Motion Picture Division Director Lindsay Dougherty praised President Donald Trump's call to place a 100% tariff on films produced in other countries. In a Truth Social post on Sunday, Trump wrote that the "Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death." He went on to warn, "Other Countries are offering all sorts of incentives to draw our filmmakers and studios away from the United States," and that, "Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated." Trump added that plans to institute a tariff are in the works, and he authorized the Department of Commerce and the United States Trade Representative "to immediately begin the process of instituting a 100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands." The two representatives of the Teamsters union praised Trump for this in a statement, saying, "For years, Hollywood studios have hollowed out the industry by following Corporate America's crooked playbook of outsourcing good union jobs. Studios chase cheap production costs overseas while gutting the American workforce that built the film and TV industry." The Teamsters president praised Trump for the new tariff he proposed, suggesting that Democrats are reflexively against whatever agenda he embraces. Newsom Proposes To Work With Trump To 'Make America Film Again,' Floats $7.5B Federal Tax Credit "These gigantic corporations line their pockets by recklessly cutting corners, abandoning American crews, and exploiting tax loopholes abroad," the statement added. "While these companies get rich fleeing to other countries and gaming the system, our members have gotten screwed over. The Teamsters Union has been sounding the alarm for years. If studios want to benefit from American box offices, they must invest in American workers. Read On The Fox News App The statement included an explicit statement of praise for Trump himself, declaring, "We thank President Trump for boldly supporting good union jobs when others have turned their heads. This is a strong step toward finally reining in the studios' un-American addiction to outsourcing our members' work." The union clarified that they are willing to praise representatives of any party for embracing such an agenda. "The Teamsters applaud any elected official — Republican, Democrat, Independent — who's willing to fight for American workers," the statement read. "We look forward to continuing to work with the administration to build a trade agenda that benefits our members and workers throughout the American motion picture and TV industry." It concluded, "It's time to create good film jobs here at home by bringing production back to America." Whoopi Goldberg Lashes Out At Trump's Hollywood Tariffs O'Brien spoke about the union's statement on Fox News' "America Reports" Tuesday, reaffirming his support for Trump's policy. He argued that America has the most creative workforce and actors, but shredded Hollywood leaders for being more focused on "the bottom line of a balance sheet" than creativity. At one point in the interview, Fox News host John Roberts asked the union boss what he thinks about how Democrats are "demonizing" the president. O'Brien suggested that the Democratic Party is reflexively against anything Trump wants. "I think I've said this before, whatever President Trump does, even if it's good for this country, just because his name is Trump, he's not gonna get the support," O'Brien said of the Democratic Party. "We are looking beyond any differences of opinions that we have had with anybody." President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Sean O'Brien speaks on stage on the first day of the Republican National Convention at the Fiserv Forum on July 15, 2024 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There is an ability to bring manufacturing back, put people to work, have careers and live a middle-class life. I think regardless of whether you are a Democrat, Republican, or an Independent, we should be realists and want to encourage people to develop and manufacture in this country," he concluded. TEAMSTERS FIGHT ALLEGIANT AIR'S JOB-KILLING SCHEME
Teamsters Oppose Allegiant's Plans to Outsource Work to Mexico WASHINGTON, April 23, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The Teamsters Union strongly opposes Allegiant Air's efforts to enter into a joint venture with Viva Aerobus, an ultra-low-cost carrier based in Mexico. Allegiant Air is seeking regulatory approval for the new partnership, which would give the majority of jobs and flying hours to Mexican crews with Viva Aerobus at the expense of 1,400 Allegiant pilots represented by Teamsters Local 2118. 'We see Allegiant's proposal for what it is –– a shameless attempt to lower our members' standard of living, all to enrich Allegiant's greedy executives,' said Teamsters General President Sean M. O'Brien. 'Allegiant's un-American attempt to outsource Teamsters work to foreign crews is unacceptable. Allegiant pilots and customers deserve better than this carrier's disrespect.' 'While we support the development of new routes and business for Allegiant, their application with Viva Aerobus will kill American jobs and set a dangerous precedent in the airline industry,' said Captain Josh Alen, the Negotiations Chair for Local 2118. 'It is extremely insulting that Allegiant would threaten to outsource our work in the middle of contract negotiations. We will not rest until Allegiant recognizes the value we provide and protects our work here in the United States.' As the Department of Transportation considers the most recent filing from Allegiant Air and Viva Aerobus, the Teamsters Union urges in the strongest possible terms that their motion be denied. Teamsters Local 2118 represents 1,400 hardworking Allegiant Air pilots nationwide. For more information, go to Contact:Kara Deniz, (202) 497-6610kdeniz@
