Mark Sears' floater at OT buzzer sends No. 7 Alabama past No. 1 Auburn, 93-91
All-American guard Mark Sears hit a game-winning floater as time expired, and No. 7 Alabama spoiled the home finale of rival and No. 1 Auburn with a 93-91 overtime road win Saturday. The bucket from Sears came after National Player of the Year candidate Johni Broome drained a 3-pointer with just under 14.7 seconds remaining. Alabama called a timeout following Broome's 3-pointer, setting up a play for Sears. The guard got the ball above the 3-point line at the wing, getting the pass from Labaron Philon. Philon ran in Sears' direction, causing some misdirection as Auburn's defenders weren't sure whether to switch. That hesitation allowed Sears to dribble into the paint, firing off a runner that went in. The bucket was only Sears' ninth point of the game, but Alabama rode a team effort to take down Auburn and Broome, who had 34 points on Saturday. For Alabama, the buzzer beater served as a bit of justice for what happened last week. Tennessee 's Jahmai Mashack drained a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Volunteers the win over the Crimson Tide. Saturday's game nearly had the same heartbreak for Alabama. While Saturday's game was a close contest throughout, Alabama held an eight-point lead roughly halfway through the second half and had taken the lead with 1:17 remaining in overtime. If the two teams were to meet again, it would be in the championship game of the SEC Tournament. The win improved Alabama to 13-5 in conference play, ensuring that it would finish third in SEC regular-season play and hold the No. 3 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. With the loss, Auburn fell to 27-4 (15-3) on the season, but it had already clinched the SEC regular-season title. [Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Alabama guard Mark Sears recognized as SEC Co-Player of the Week
In what should not be surprising news to anyone, Alabama Crimson Tide guard Mark Sears has been named as the SEC Co-Player of the Week based on his recent performances, as announced by the conference Monday. Sears' shares the honor with Tennessee's Chaz Lanier, who was also named SEC Co-Player of the Week according to the conference. A week in which Alabama fell at Missouri, but also defeated Kentucky at home, Sears was nothing short of special in the two games for the Crimson Tide. Beginning on Wednesday night in Columbia, Sears led Alabama in scoring during their 110-98 road loss at Missouri, finishing with a game-high 35 points on 12-of-20 shooting from the field, as well as 5-of-11 from three. Sears also finished with two rebounds, five assists, and shot six-of-seven from the free throw line in the loss. Saturday against Kentucky, Sears continued that offensive success by posting a game-high 30 points in a 96-83 win for the Crimson Tide on 8-of-17 shooting from the field, as well as a perfect 11-of-11 at the free throw line. The Alabama guard also shot three-of-eight from three, while also adding four rebounds, four assists, and two steals. For the season, Sears is now averaging a combined 18.9 points, 3 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game, while also shooting 41.2% from the field, 35.3% from three, and 84.1% at the free throw line. Sears and Alabama will be back in action Tuesday night at home against Mississippi State. Georgia puts away LSU with strong second half
February 6 - Asa Newell scored a team-high 17 points as Georgia pulled away for an 81-62 victory over visiting LSU on Wednesday in Southeastern Conference play. RJ Godfrey and De'Shayne Montgomery added 12 points apiece, while Blue Cain collected 10 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists as the Bulldogs (16-7, 4-6) outrebounded LSU 47-26 for their second win in three tries. The Tigers (12-10, 1-8) dropped their fifth straight and have lost eight of nine. Jordan Sears led the way with 11 points, followed by Daimion Collins and Cam Carter, who chipped in 10 apiece. After leading by six at halftime, Georgia saw its advantage shrink to three after Sears' triple and Carter's free throws cut LSU's deficit to 49-46 with under 15 minutes left. From there, Montgomery, Cain and Newell's buckets extended the Bulldogs' edge to nine. Mike Williams III's free throws stopped the bleeding for the Tigers, but Cain's three-point play began a 12-2 Georgia run, stamped with Godfrey's dunk at the 8:27 mark. Dakota Leffew's 3-pointer just over a minute later gave Georgia a 70-52 lead -- the Bulldogs' largest of the night to that point. After LSU pulled within 13, Newell scored seven straight points to push the Bulldogs' advantage to 20 with 2:06 left. LSU connected on five of its first six 3-point attempts and grabbed a 15-13 lead on Dji Bailey and Sears' consecutive treys. After Newell's back-to-back buckets, Bailey's second triple gave LSU an 18-17 advantage at the 13:15 mark. Curtis Givens III drained a 3-pointer to knot the score at 27 with 7:43 remaining, before Montgomery's triple put the Bulldogs ahead by three 24 seconds later. Neither team scored again until Dylan James' hook shot with 3:39 left, which he followed with a 3-pointer, giving Georgia a 35-27 edge. Williams' layup then snapped a nearly six-minute scoring drought, accounting for the Tigers' first two-pointer of the game with two minutes left. Georgia took a 37-31 lead into halftime.
