"Very Personal" For Me: Usha Vance On India-US Ties
Washington: US Second Lady Usha Vance termed the India-US relationship as one that is "very personal" for her, underlining that this is a time of "great opportunity" for ties between the two nations whose relationship has "ebbed and flowed at times". "It is a very personal relationship because I have family members who are in India, and I have many family members here in the United States, and I did grow up visiting India and visiting those family members," Vance said during a fireside chat here at the eighth edition of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) Leadership Summit. "So that's always been a relationship that I've personally thought of as very important," she said at the event attended by prominent government, business and community leaders from India and the US. Responding to a question on her perspective about the relationship between the two countries, Vance said, "This is a time of great opportunity. And I think if my husband were here, he'd say the same thing." "Obviously, the United States and India - the relationship has ebbed and flowed at right now, I think, in the next four years and in the future, the fact that there is this established Indian-American population here, and so many people in India who know the country and know the people who are here doing great things, having great opportunities," she said during the fireside chat conducted by John Chambers, USISPF chairman and JC2 Ventures founder and CEO. Vance recalled that when the Second Family — Vice President J D Vance, herself and their three young children — visited India recently, "I was struck by the number of people who came up to me to say how much they loved our country, how they visited family, how they visited just for pleasure, that they were hoping for a close relationship looking forward. And I think these personal ties actually really have something to do with it." At the leadership summit, USISPF also presented the 2025 Global Leadership Awards to IBM Chairman Arvind Krishna, Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla and Hitachi Executive Chairman Toshiaki Higashihara "for their outstanding contributions in strengthening the US-India-Japan economic partnership." This is the first time that business leaders from the QUAD grouping of Australia, India, Japan and the US will be honoured at the USISPF summit. USISPF is an independent not-for-profit institution focused on strengthening the US-India partnership.

Elephants in silver ornaments, folk dancers welcome Vance family to Amber Fort as US Vice President goes sightseeing in Jaipur
When the people of Hathi Gaon in Jaipur heard they were about to host US Vice President J D Vance, they knew exactly what to do – bring out the silver ornaments famously used when former US President Bill Clinton was in town 25 years ago. Vance, his wife Usha, and their three children visited Amber Fort, about 10 km from Jaipur city, on Tuesday morning. There, they were greeted by two elephants – Chanda and Pushpa – adorned with the silver ornaments. The ornaments inclduded paajeb (anklets), kantha (necklace), mukut (head piece), kangoje (earrings), sher ki jhool (silver embroidered cloth covering the elephant) and audha (the seat on the elephant), said Ballu Khan, president of Hathi Gaon development committee and one of the mahouts of the elephants. Hathi Gaon is an area near Amber Fort where elephants are housed and cared for. 'These ornaments are taken out only on special occasions on the requests of the government. These are ornaments that are provided to us by the former Maharaja of Jaipur and we have been keeping them since then,' Ballu Khan told The Indian Express. At Amber Fort, the Vance family also saw folk artists, who performed the Kachhi Ghori, Ghoomar and Kalbelia dances. After this, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari met Vance and family. The Second Family of United States spent one-and-a-half hours at Amber Fort, and visited various parts of the massive complex made of different materials, including sandstone, marble and yellow stone. They visited the Diwan-e-Aam, Ganesh Pol, Sheesh Mahal and Man Singh Mahal in the fort. At 11.30 am, they left the fort and went back to the Rambagh Palace Hotel, where they are staying. The US Vice President is on a four-day visit to India. He reached Delhi on Monday, and after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he visited the Akshardham temple in the national capital. He reached Jaipur at 9.30 pm Monday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US Vice President JD Vance held one-on-one and delegation-level talks on the crucial India-US bilateral trade agreement and the overall relationship between the two countries. The two leaders also discussed US President Donald Trump's possible visit to India later in the year. Following the talks, the PM hosted the US Second Family for dinner read more Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomes US Vice President JD Vance to his official residence 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, in New Delhi. Image Courtesy: @MEAIndia/X After landing at Palam Airport and visiting the Akshardham Temple, it was time to get down to business for United States Vice President JD Vance on Monday evening (April 21). The US VP met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, and discussed the crucial bilateral trade deal and the overall partnership that New Delhi and Washington share. Following the talks, Modi hosted Vance and his family — wife, Usha, and their three children — over dinner that was also joined by several Union Cabinet ministers and American officials. During this part of the evening, Modi also gifted Vance's children Ewan, Vivek and Mirabel with peacock feathers. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Notably, this is Vance's first visit to India and the first by an American vice president since 2013. It also comes at a highly significant time — amid President Donald Trump's trade wars that have been born out of his reciprocal tariffs. Modi-Vance and the all-important trade deal On arriving at the PM Modi's residence, US VP JD Vance discussed the US-India Bilateral Trade Agreement as agreed during the PM's talks with Trump in Washington DC in February. The trade pact is expected to address a variety of issues including tariff and market access. India is looking at firming up the first tranche of the trade deal before Trump's pause on the customised reciprocal tariffs lapses in July. The White House said the trade pact (BTA) 'presents an opportunity' to negotiate a new and modern agreement focused on promoting job creation and citizen well-being in both countries, with the goal of enhancing bilateral trade and supply-chain integration in a balanced and mutually beneficial manner. PM Narendra Modi and US Vice President JD Vance hailed the 'significant progress' on the US-India bilateral trade agreement. Image Courtesy: @MEAIndia/X 'Guided by their respective visions of 'Amrit Kaal for India' and 'Golden Age for America,' the BTA is expected to create new opportunities of growth for workers, farmers, and entrepreneurs in both countries,' it said. At the end of their talks, both leaders said they had made 'significant progress' in the negotiations for the trade deal and formally announced the 'finalisation of the terms of reference' for the negotiations, laying down a roadmap for further discussions about our economic priorities. The Indian readout also echoed the same view. It read that Modi and Vance had 'reviewed and positively assessed' the progress in various areas of bilateral cooperation. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'They welcomed the significant progress in the negotiations for a mutually beneficial India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement focused on the welfare of the people of the two countries,' it said. India seeks US investment Apart from the trade deal, Vance and Modi also discussed US investment in India, especially in the fields of manufacturing, automobiles, and energy sectors. This comes amidst the backdrop of Trump's 'First Buddy' Elon Musk holding talks with PM Modi last week during which he indicated a possibility of entering the Indian market — either in the form of Tesla in the EV category, or Starlink. Besides this, there are also reports that US firms are now looking at investing in India in order to increase their production of products such as laptops, mobiles and tablets. This comes as they seek to reduce their dependence on China, as the two economic giants battle it out. He's a great leader and he was incredibly kind to my family. I look forward to working under President Trump's leadership to strengthen our friendship and cooperation with the people of India!' A future Trump visit Modi and Vance also discussed the possibility of US President Donald Trump's visit to India later in the year. According to a readout from the Indian side, PM Modi conveyed to Vance his warm greetings for President Donald Trump and said that he looked forward to his visit to India later this year. Trump is expected to visit India later this year to attend the annual summit of the Quad grouping. A dinner and gifts for Vance's family Following the hours-long talks, PM Modi hosted US Vice President JD Vance, his wife, Usha, and their three children for dinner. The PM also shared lighter moments with the three children, gifting them peacock feathers. A video from the visit even shows PM Modi playfully engaging with Vance's sons — Ewan and Vivek — who were seen sitting on his lap and chatting with him.
