Elephants in silver ornaments, folk dancers welcome Vance family to Amber Fort as US Vice President goes sightseeing in Jaipur

Indian Express22-04-2025
When the people of Hathi Gaon in Jaipur heard they were about to host US Vice President J D Vance, they knew exactly what to do – bring out the silver ornaments famously used when former US President Bill Clinton was in town 25 years ago.
Vance, his wife Usha, and their three children visited Amber Fort, about 10 km from Jaipur city, on Tuesday morning. There, they were greeted by two elephants – Chanda and Pushpa – adorned with the silver ornaments. The ornaments inclduded paajeb (anklets), kantha (necklace), mukut (head piece), kangoje (earrings), sher ki jhool (silver embroidered cloth covering the elephant) and audha (the seat on the elephant), said Ballu Khan, president of Hathi Gaon development committee and one of the mahouts of the elephants. Hathi Gaon is an area near Amber Fort where elephants are housed and cared for.
'These ornaments are taken out only on special occasions on the requests of the government. These are ornaments that are provided to us by the former Maharaja of Jaipur and we have been keeping them since then,' Ballu Khan told The Indian Express.
At Amber Fort, the Vance family also saw folk artists, who performed the Kachhi Ghori, Ghoomar and Kalbelia dances.
After this, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma and Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari met Vance and family.
The Second Family of United States spent one-and-a-half hours at Amber Fort, and visited various parts of the massive complex made of different materials, including sandstone, marble and yellow stone.
They visited the Diwan-e-Aam, Ganesh Pol, Sheesh Mahal and Man Singh Mahal in the fort.
At 11.30 am, they left the fort and went back to the Rambagh Palace Hotel, where they are staying.
The US Vice President is on a four-day visit to India. He reached Delhi on Monday, and after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he visited the Akshardham temple in the national capital. He reached Jaipur at 9.30 pm Monday.

‘Crazy-communist white hippies': Chants & boos disrupt JD Vance's national guard lunch; DC pushback grows

Stephen Miller (left), Pete Hegseth, JD Vance (AP) Vice President JD Vance's lunch event with national guard troops at Union Station on Wednesday was disrupted by a wave of protests, as demonstrators voiced opposition to the Trump administration's security deployment in the capital. Vance, joined by defence secretary Pete Hegseth and White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, met National Guard members - many from red states such as South Carolina, Ohio, and Mississippi - at a Shake Shack inside the station. The visit was intended as a gesture of appreciation for troops deployed to patrol Washington, DC, according to CNN. As Vance entered the venue, he was met with a mix of applause and boos. Protesters blocked from entering the second floor of the restaurant chanted 'shame,' 'this is our city,' and 'we want the military out of our streets.' In response, others began chanting 'USA.' When questioned by reporters during a brief press interaction, Vance dismissed the demonstrators as 'crazy' and 'communists.' Miller added, without evidence, that the protesters were 'elderly white hippies' and 'not part of the city,' as quoted by the news outlet. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is this legal? Techno Mag Learn More Undo Referencing his past visit to Union Station with his children, Vance said, 'They were being screamed at by violent vagrants, and it was scaring the hell out of my kids.' The visit highlighted ongoing tensions between DC residents and the Trump administration's decision to deploy federal forces in the city. A Washington Post-Schar School poll earlier found that about 80% of DC residents oppose the move and the federal takeover of the city's police department. Vance pushed back against those numbers, stating: 'I'm highly skeptical that a majority of DC residents don't want their city to have better public safety and more reasonable safety standards.' A college student at Union Station, who asked not to be named, told CNN, the troop presence felt 'overwhelming.' She added, 'I thought I had read that the crime rate in DC is actually going down?' While city officials and Democrats have raised similar points, Vance claimed crime is 'massively underreported.' When asked for supporting data, he responded: 'Just talk to a resident of this city.' Some media reports suggest that the department of justice is currently investigating whether DC's metropolitan police department manipulated crime data. As Vance concluded the visit and returned to the main level, more boos followed. 'I heard you buddy,' he responded to one protester. 'This is the guy who thinks people don't deserve law and order in their own community,' he said to Hegseth. Outside, another group of protesters gathered near parked National Guard vehicles. One sign read: 'Criminals out of DC? Start with the Epstein files.'

Gujarat school play allegedly depicting women wearing burqas as terrorists triggers row

A play during an Independence Day programme at a school in Gujarat's Bhavnagar has triggered a row about the alleged depiction of women wearing burqas as terrorists, The Indian Express reported. Videos of the cultural programme were widely shared on social media. On Tuesday, District Education Officer Hitendrasinh D Padheriya issued a notice to the Municipal School Board Administrative Officer Munjal Badmaliya seeking a report within a week about the programme held at the government school, the newspaper reported. The notice was issued based on a representation made by Bandharan Bachav Samiti Bhavnagar, a social organisation, which alleged that the play had portrayed the Muslim community as terrorists. The organisation demanded action against those behind the play, according to The Indian Express. Rajendrakumar Dave, the school principal, said: 'We only wanted to depict what happened in Operation Sindoor.' 'We did not intend to hurt anyone's sentiments,' he told ANI. 'We conducted this event only to invoke patriotism. If any community is hurt, I apologise.' The district education officer sought details of the programme and asked whether the depiction as has been alleged was intentional, and details of the event held at the school. The Bandharan Bachav Samiti Bhavnagar had alleged that the play was 'an attempt by the school staff to hurt religious sentiments and spread unrest in the public'. 'In the play, girls dressed in Muslim attire (burqa) were shown as terrorists, clearly depicting the Muslim community as terrorists,' the organisation alleged, according to The Indian Express. It added that the Muslim community was angry with the teachers, the organisation said. Badmaliya said that the event is held every year on Independence Day and Republic Day. 'This year it was themed on Operation Sindoor and the bravery of our defence forces, and programmes were held in every school,' the newspaper quoted him as saying. 'Nothing was intentional or deliberate.'
