Universal Pictures has won a competitive bidding process for the family comedy project Dance Parents, featuring Charlize Theron and Channing Tatum as producers and lead actors. Jonathan Levine is attached to direct and produce, with Meghan Malloy writing the screenplay. Theron will produce through her Secret Menu banner alongside partners, while Tatum will produce via Free Association. Production oversight at Universal will be managed by SVP Production Development Ryan Jones and Christine Sun, Director of Production Development. Theron and Levine previously collaborated on 2019's comedy Long Shot. Meanwhile, Tatum and Carolin's Free Association have recently completed various high-profile projects, including Dog and Blink Twice. Secret Menu's upcoming slate includes Netflix's Apex, a Philip K. Dick inspired feature with Alfonso Cuarón, and more. Universal's acquisition of Dance Parents signals confidence in the proven chemistry between Theron and Tatum and the potential of a fresh dance-themed family comedy headed into production. Further details, casting, and release plans are expected in the coming months.
