SHAH ALAM, July 18 (Bernama) -- A container lorry skidded and overturned on the Kesas Highway here this morning, causing the chemicals it was carrying to spill onto the road. Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar said the driver of the Shah Alam-bound lorry sustained minor injuries. He said the department was alerted to the incident at about 10.25 am and arrived at the scene 15 minutes later.

[UPDATED] Chemical spill chaos: Trailer overturns on Kesas Expressway
SHAH ALAM: A trailer transporting hazardous chemicals overturned along the Shah Alam Expressway (Kesas) earlier today, spilling its cargo. Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said the incident occurred at 10.25am. "A fire engine, hazardous materials (Hazmat) unit, and an emergency medical rescue vehicle, along with 14 personnel, were dispatched to the scene," he said when contacted. The trailer was carrying liquid chemical substances, including sulphur, calcium carbonate, and titanium oxide. Mukhlis said that the chemicals were stored in 10 intermediate bulk containers, each with a capacity of 1,000 litres. "The chemicals spilled within the containers and eventually flowed onto the expressway's surface. "One person, the lorry driver, was rescued by members of the public and sustained only minor injuries," he added. Personnel on site are currently awaiting the arrival of a contractor to upright and move the trailer to the roadside, allowing chemical clean-up operations to begin. No other injuries were reported in the incident. Sulphur is primarily used in the production of sulphuric acid, a key ingredient in fertilisers, detergents, and pigments. It also plays an essential role in vulcanising rubber, manufacturing matches and explosives, and is used in the pharmaceutical and paper industries. Sulphur compounds are also employed in pesticides, fungicides, and certain food preservation processes. Titanium oxide is a naturally occurring white compound commonly used as a pigment in paints, plastics, and cosmetics. It is also a key ingredient in sunscreens and is found in products such as toothpaste, food colourants, and some pharmaceuticals. Calcium carbonate is widely used as a dietary calcium supplement and antacid. It is also one of the most abundant compounds found in the Earth's crust and has various industrial applications.

[UPDATED] Lorry bursts into flames on KL-Karak highway, traffic brought to a halt
KUALA LUMPUR: A lorry caught fire along the Kuala Lumpur - Karak highway this morning, causing traffic heading into the city to come to a standstill. Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (Operations) Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said the incident occurred around 7.24am today. "We received a distress call and immediately deployed a fire engine and 10 firemen to the scene. "They arrived at 8.08am and began operations to extinguish the fire," he said when contacted. He said the lorry was fully engulfed in flames when firemen arrived at the scene. Meanwhile, in a Facebook post, the Malaysian Highway Authority said as of 8.28am, the left lane at Km35.1 of the highway was obstructed due to the fire. It also urged motorists to plan their journeys accordingly, as traffic was heavily congested in the area following the incident.

[UPDATED] Bangladeshi worker killed, 5 injured in glove factory rack collapse in Selangor
KUALA LUMPUR: A Bangladeshi worker was killed and five others were injured after a 17-tier storage rack collapsed at a glove factory in Olak Lempit, Kuala Langat, this morning. Selangor Fire and Rescue Department Assistant Director of Operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mukhtar said they received a distress call at 10.54am about the incident at Glov Master Factory, and a team from the KLIA Fire and Rescue Station arrived at 11.05am. Upon arriving, they noticed five workers had been pulled out safely, but one was stuck underneath the pile. All were reported injured. One victim, who was trapped beneath the collapsed storage structure, however, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. "Search and rescue operations were immediately carried out. At 11.20am, the final victim was located beneath the rubble but was pronounced dead at the scene by Health Ministry personnel," said operation commander Muhammad Nur Khairi Samsumin. The deceased has been identified only as Rahman, a 33-year-old Bangladeshi national. The operation involved nine firemen, supported by one fire engine truck and an Emergency Medical Rescue Service (EMRS) vehicle. Investigations into the cause of the structural collapse are still underway.
