UNC basketball 2024-25 player review: Seth Trimble
The 2024-25 UNC basketball season is in the books, and with that, it's time for our player season reviews for the campaign. We're continuing our review with guard Seth Trimble, who split his junior year between a starting role and the Tar Heels' sixth man. Though Trimble is easily a starting-caliber player, he proved to be more effective off the bench later in the year, acting as a key cog in North Carolina's run to an NCAA Tournament berth. Advertisement Trimble elevated his offensive game big-time, adding dunks and a more consistent jumper to his arsenal. Trimble's most underestimated skill is his rebounding ability, as he led UNC in boards before Ven-Allen Lubin's late-season ascension. Trimble almost left Chapel Hill during the 2024 offseason, but quickly removed himself from the transfer portal. I like to think without Trimble, the Tar Heels don't play in the NCAA Tournament this year. Trimble prides himself on wearing that North Carolina uniform – and he is a vocal leader. With RJ Davis gone, Trimble will be the guy for UNC in the fall. 2024-25 stats: 11.6 points, 5 rebounds, 1.4 steals, 1.3 assists per game, 42.8 percent field goal shooting in 34 games (18 starts) Season in Review North Carolina guard Seth Trimble, who starred in high school at Menomonee Falls, tries to get around Mississippi forward Jaemyn Brakefield during the second half of their first round NCAA tournament game Friday at Fiserv Forum. Trimble's return was much-needed for the Tar Heels, which entered their 2024-2025 campaign with a much younger, more inexperienced – albeit talented – roster. Advertisement When North Carolina rolled with a 4-guard lineup early in the season, Trimble was the team's best rebounder. Trimble could take over ball-handling duties from Davis and Elliot Cadeau, spot up on the perimeter or drive the basket. Trimble could give UNC 10 points on any given night, or space the floor and keep opponents guessing. There were plenty of strong performance for Trimble during his junior year, but his best game came during a 102-96 overtime win over Boston College in January, when he scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Hanisch-Imagn Images With RJ out of eligibility and Elliot Cadeau gone, I fully expect Trimble to come back and run the Tar Heels offense in the fall. Trimble will end his senior season as North Carolina's leading scorer – and create some NBA Draft hype for himself in the process. Advertisement We know that Trimble will get to play alongside incoming 5-star power forward Caleb Wilson, who is one of Hubert Davis' greatest recruiting victories as UNC's head coach, plus incoming 4-star combo guards Derek Dixon and Isaiah Denis. Will Trimble etch himself in Tar Heel lore during the 2025-2026 college basketball season? Stay tuned. UNC basketball tabbed a way-too-early top 25 team by 247Sports
UNC basketball tabbed a way-too-early top 25 team by 247Sports UNC is ranked way ahead of its next basketball season, but can it finish the year ranked? We're not even a week removed from Florida's comeback against Houston in the National Championship game, but people are already talking about the 2025-2026 college basketball season. Some of that chatter features your North Carolina Tar Heels. UNC is still searching for its starting point guard through the transfer portal, contacting the likes of Xaivion Lee and Tre Holloman. Seth Trimble is returning for senior year, a major boost to a North Carolina squad with unproven leadership, while Caleb Wilson's pending arrival and Henri Veesaar's commitment give the Tar Heels a suddenly-lethal frontcourt. Part of preseason predictions feature Way-Too-Early rankings, but teams rarely finish in the spots media outlets predict them in. 247Sports has UNC ranked 23rd in its Way-Too-early Top 25 for the 2025-2026 season. Check out the reasons why North Carolina landed the ranking it did: "North Carolina's top-five of Seth Trimble, Drake Powell, Caleb Wilson, Henri Veesaar and Ven-Allen Lubin can coalesce into one of the best teams in the ACC," Isaac Trotter wrote. "The Veesaar addition is enormous — literally and figuratively — but losing Ian Jackson to the transfer portal on Monday is a blow. UNC has a lot of moves left on the docket and the pressure is on to find a difference-making guard who can pass, dribble and shoot." Lubin is a key piece of the Tar Heels' roster puzzle, who doesn't get enough credit for his late-season ascension into the starting lineup. After flip-flopping with Jalen Washington at center, Lubin's consistent productivity made him a starter from February on. As Trotter says above, once UNC lands a starting point guard for its upcoming season, the roster picture looks a lot more clear. Combo guards Derek Dixon and Isaiah Denis are highly-anticipated arrivals, but you want them to have help. Instant analysis as UNC basketball dismantles San Diego State in First Four
The North Carolina Tar Heels went to Dayton, Ohio, and took on San Diego State with an opportunity to travel to Milwaukee and face off with No. 6-seed Ole Miss in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. This game lasted approximately 10 minutes before UNC held a 20-point lead, finishing with a 95-68 win. When everything was said and done, they finished 30-of-57 from the field and 14-for-24 from behind the arc. Typically a team that is averaging 40% from the field and 30% from three ended with 53% from the field and 58% from three. If you can believe it, the defense might have been better than the offense. Advertisement Let's look at five quick things that were on display tonight. North Carolina couldn't miss Mar 18, 2025; Dayton, OH, USA; North Carolina Tar Heels guard Drake Powell (9) shoots the ball in the second half against the San Diego State Aztecs at UD Arena. Mandatory Credit: Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images The Tar Heels came out firing early and often, and it paid off. The team was shooting greater than 50% from behind the arc in the first half as it took a tight game to a 20+ point game after going on a 20-2 run in the middle of the first 20 minutes. It wasn't just one player either, Jae'Lyn Withers had two, Drake Powell and Elliot Cadeau both had one, Ian Jackson had three, and RJ Davis went a perfect 6-for-6. The Tar Heels defense was suffocating Mar 18, 2025; Dayton, OH, USA; North Carolina Tar Heels guard Seth Trimble (7) reacts in the second half against the San Diego State Aztecs at UD Arena. Mandatory Credit: Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images On top of shooting lights out, the combined defense of Seth Trimble, Davis, and Cadeau wouldn't let the combo of Nick Boyd and Miles Byrd get anything going. The return of Magoon Gwath proved irrelevant as well, with Withers, Ven-Allen Lubin, and Jalen Washington providing high-level interior defense. Advertisement The strong defense is what led to the high-flying offense. Hubert Davis didn't take his foot off the gas Mar 18, 2025; Dayton, OH, USA; North Carolina Tar Heels guard Elliot Cadeau (3) dribbles the ball in the second half against the San Diego State Aztecs at UD Arena. Mandatory Credit: Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images Far too often this season, we have seen North Carolina taking big leads followed by allowing teams to break back down the lead and come back. For one of the first times in a big game this season, Hubert Davis brought the team to a 20+ point lead and grew it to over 40 points in the middle of the second half. They out-rebounded SDSU by 11 rebounds and finished with just five turnovers in the final 35 minutes of the game. UNC proved the nation wrong, honed in the noise Mar 18, 2025; Dayton, OH, USA; North Carolina Tar Heels guard Seth Trimble (7) signs a 'March Madness' towel in the second half against the San Diego State Aztecs at UD Arena. Mandatory Credit: Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images For the last 48 hours, all UNC coaches, players, and fans alike have been hearing from opposing fans and national analysts that the Tar Heels don't belong. Advertisement They even called out Bubba Cunningham being on the selection committee. However, if tonight proved anything, it made believers out of non-believers, and it silenced the skeptics. North Carolina provided a clinic on toughness and the power of honing in negative noise, allowing it to provide fuel. RJ Davis look like the former ACC Player of the Year Mar 18, 2025; Dayton, OH, USA; North Carolina Tar Heels guard RJ Davis (4) shoots the ball over San Diego State Aztecs guard BJ Davis (10) in the second half at UD Arena. Mandatory Credit: Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images This team isn't particularly young, but one of the major pieces missing from last year for North Carolina was the "ACC Player of the Year" caliber play from RJ Davis. There have been glimpses of the old Davis throughout the season, but this game was a complete showing of who Davis actually is and how good he can play. Advertisement Davis finished with a game-high 26 points on 8-of-12 shooting and was a perfect 6-for-6 from behind the arc.
