Calicut varsity V-C attends RSS affiliate's event
P. Raveendran, Vice-Chancellor (V-C), University of Calicut, on Sunday (July 6) attended an event organised by Seva Bharati, an affiliate of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, in Malappuram district. This comes against the backdrop of the tussle between Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and Registrar K.S. Anil Kumar of the University of Kerala over the use of a 'Bharat Mata' portrait at a recent private event at the university's Senate hall. Mr. Raveendran, a former functionary of the Congress-aligned Calicut University Teachers' Association, was appointed to the post of V-C in 2024 by the then Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, apparently against the wishes of the Left Democratic Front government. On Sunday, he opened the Malappuram district delegates' conference of the Seva Bharati at Parappanangadi. He is also reported to have praised the works undertaken by the organisation. 'I get invitations to attend many social events. If time permits, I attend them. There is nothing more to it,' Mr. Raveendran told The Hindu.

Spinal cord injury rehab centre in Byndoor to be completed in 3 months
Udupi: Under the Seva Sethu initiative, which aims to address critical healthcare gaps in the Byndoor assembly constituency, work is in progress on Seva Dham, a dedicated spinal cord injury rehabilitation centre. Byndoor MLA Gururaj Gantihole told TOI the centre is the second major project under Seva Sethu, launched last year as part of the broader Samruddha Byndoor mission, an initiative focused on developing the constituency through public-private collaboration. In partnership with the NGO Seva Bharati from Kanyadi in Belthangady, a defunct govt lower primary school building in Henaberu, handed over by the Block Education Office, is being developed into the rehabilitation centre. The decision to take up this project was based on a local survey that highlighted the need for specialised care. Byndoor's geography, with its dense forests and rural terrain, often limits access to emergency and specialty healthcare. In addition, due to the region's strong dependence on agriculture, cases of spinal injuries caused by falling from trees are notably high. The foundation stone for the project was laid on April 28, and renovation work is progressing swiftly. Within three months, the centre is expected to be equipped with ramps, accessible toilets, hospital beds, and other facilities tailored for persons with disabilities, the MLA said. The estimated project cost is Rs 20 lakh, which will be taken care of through donors. Access to adequate medical care was a long-standing challenge in Byndoor. For emergencies, from snakebites to trauma, residents have to travel upto Udupi. Dialysis patients, in particular, suffered the brunt of limited local infrastructure, often travelling to Manipal, Ajjarkad, or Kundapur for regular treatment, facing long waits and significant physical and financial strain. However, it was only recently that Kasturba Hospital expanded its services by launching emergency care, dialysis, and speciality consultations at Anjali Hospital in Byndoor.
