Shakthi teams emerge as a force in addressing crimes against women

1 2 3 Vijayawada: With an unwavering focus on the safety of women and children, Andhra Pradesh's Shakthi Teams have emerged as a critical frontline force in preventing, detecting, and resolving crimes against women across the state. From patrolling high-risk zones and rescuing women in distress to securing convictions in heinous offences, the state's 156 Shakthi Teams are transforming public safety into a mission of swift response and active protection. Formed across all 26 districts, the Shakthi Teams are not only responsible for investigating and resolving crimes but also for proactively identifying unsafe public areas, counselling women and girls, and holding awareness programmes. These women-led teams have turned into a symbol of assurance and security in both rural and urban regions. According to DGP Harish Kumar Gupta, these interventions have not just remained operational statistics. Several real-life rescues stand as testaments to their commitment. In Tangellamudi village (Eluru district), a woman attempting suicide on a railway track was rescued and counselled by a patrolling Shakthi Team. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo In Tekali and Palasa mandals (Srikakulam district), the teams successfully traced missing women and reunited them with their families. In Vinukonda (Palnadu district), a distress call led to the rescue of a boy, while in Vizianagaram, eve-teasers were swiftly apprehended and counselled. Complementing the efforts of these teams is the state's emphasis on the immediate registration of FIRs through multiple platforms. "Crimes against women and missing person reports are now being lodged directly at police stations, via the Shakthi mobile app, WhatsApp, and through Zero FIRs, which allow police to register a case regardless of jurisdiction and transfer it to the appropriate station later," DGP said. From June 2024 to date, 261 convictions were secured in crimes against women, including 4 death penalties and 66 life sentences, acting as a strong deterrent. Overall, Andhra Pradesh is emerging as a model for gender-sensitive and technology-driven policing, the DGP added. These verdicts are acting as a strong deterrent. Police officials note that the fear of severe punishment is making potential offenders think twice before committing crimes against women and girls. The DGP also said that the integration of technology, swift response teams, legal follow-through, and community engagement is placing Andhra Pradesh at the forefront of gender-sensitive policing. As Shakthi Teams continue their mission with dedication and vigilance, they are not only solving crimes but are reshaping public confidence in law enforcement and ensuring that women and girls across the state can live without fear. A major aspect of their success lies in their extensive fieldwork. Over the past year, Shakthi Teams have identified 900 hotspots for crimes against women and made 36,659 visits to these areas to deter offenders and counsel vulnerable individuals. They conducted 20,928 awareness programmes, sensitising lakhs of citizens on issues related to harassment, stalking, and the legal remedies available. They attended to 1,266 SOS calls, rescuing women and children in distress situations, often intervening just in time to prevent tragedies. They patrolled 32,021 open spaces, targeting locations notorious for open drinking, eve-teasing, and anti-social activities. They deployed drone surveillance to monitor habitual offenders and unsafe zones—an innovative approach to crime prevention and real-time intervention. This push for responsiveness is showing results in the judiciary too. From June 1, 2024, to date, Andhra Pradesh secured 261 convictions in crimes against women. These include 4 death penalties, 66 life imprisonments, 7 sentences of 25 years, 47 of 20 years, and 137 punishments of 10 years or less.
