Mysuru: District minister Dr H C Mahadevappa on Friday described Karnataka's development model as the one aimed at empowerment of all citizens, ensuring equal rights and opportunities for all, abiding by the law of the land.
He was speaking at the 79th Independence Day celebrations organised by the district administration and the National Festivals Celebration Committee held at Banni Mantap Grounds here.
He said that the govt not only walked the talk, but also successfully implemented all five poll guarantee schemes. As many as seven lakh families were benefiting from the Anna Bhagya free 10kg of rice. Additionally, 32.6 crore women travelled in its state-run buses after it rolled out the Shakthi scheme of free bus travel for women.
Furthermore, 9.14 lakh women heads of families were benefiting from the Gruha Lakshmi scheme, receiving monthly assistance of Rs 2,000 each, with 10,539 beneficiaries benefiting from Yuva Nidhi scheme.
The govt has also implemented Krishi Bhagya, promoting agriculture, horticulture, irrigation, and watershed development schemes. So far, 13,985 houses were constructed against the target of 21,000 houses in the district.

He also said Mysuru City Corporation has collected a record property tax of Rs 239 crore this fiscal year in the state, achieving 93%. It also entered into an agreement with Bharat Petroleum Organisation for the establishment of a compressed biogas plant at the cost of Rs 65 crore by processing 145 tonnes of waste generated every day in Mysuru. The govt also established nine Namma clinics, extending 12 types of health services to people.
The govt will complete the Dr B R Ambedkar Bhavan at a cost of Rs 23 crore by Mysuru Development Authority on Deewan's Road here.
MLA Tanveer Sait, MLC C N Manjegowda, DC G Lakshmikanth Reddy, ZP CEO S Ukesh Kumar, MCC commissioner Syed Asif Tanveer, police commissioner Seema Latkar, and SP N Vishnuvardhan were present.

ED searches DMK minister Periyasamy's residences
CHENNAI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) raided the houses, business premises and even the MLA hostel rooms of the state rural development minister I Periyasamy and his family members, including his son, IP Senthilkumar MLA, in Chennai and Dindigul, their hometown. The ED officials, who did not reveal the background for the searches, engaged a duplicate key maker to open the locked rooms in the official residence of the minister on Greenways Road. Meanwhile, the secretary of the assembly secretariat, K Srinavasan, lodged a complaint with Triplicane police alleging that 'unknown persons' had trespassed into the MLA hostel. City police acknowledged the receipt of the complaint by issuing a community service receipt (CSR). Sources said authorities locked the minister's cabin in the Secretariat in anticipation that ED teams might land there too, but ED sleuths stopped with the residence and the MLA hostel. Simultaneous searches happened in three places in Dindigul: the minister's residence in Durairaj Nagar, Senthilkumar's residence at Vallalar Nagar, and the minister's daughter Indra's residence at Seelapadi. After the information about the raids spread, DMK cadres gathered in front of the houses in large numbers. While the CRPF personnel guarded the premises, state police personnel were deployed in the localities concerned to maintain the law and order situation. In Chennai, the searches were wound up in the evening, but the ED is yet to issue an official statement on the searches. DMK organising secretary R S Bharathi condemned the ED action and said the DMK and its cadress cannot be scared by the assaults of the central agencies. MDMK general secretary Vaiko also condemned the ED raids and said that the Union govt was misusing central agencies to target opposition leaders for a political motive and as a means to intimidate and stifle their voices. 'The central govt is using the Income Tax and Enforcement Departments to intimidate its opponents and stifle the voice. That is why the raid is being carried out at the house of Periyasamy. This is strongly condemnable,' he said. It may be noted that the Madras high court had recently reversed the order of the Dindigul trial court, which relieved the DMK leader and his family members in the Rs 2 crore disproportionate assets case. The case pertains to the accumulation of assets to the tune of Rs 2 crore between 2006 and 2010 when Periyasamy was the housing minister. While DVAC filed a chargesheet against Periyasamy, his wife Suseela, and sons Senthilkumar and Prabhu, the ED also registered a money-laundering case based on the DVAC FIR and interrogated Periyasamy in 2022. However, the Dindigul trial court acquitted all of them from the case. But the Madras high court set aside the trial court order in April and ordered a fresh trial.

Protests in Jalgaon after statue desecration
Nashik: Residents of a Jalgaon village, within Pahur police station's jurisdiction, took to the streets on Aug 15 after a statue of a prominent Indian politician was found desecrated in the market area at 7.30 am on Friday. Protests were also staged by a political party in front of the Jalgaon district collector's office, demanding strict action against those involved in the desecration. Additional SP Kavita Nerkar said, acting on a tip-off, a 50-year-old man from the same village where the incident took place was arrested by the Pahur police and charged under sections 298 (injuring or defiling a place of worship), 299 (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings), and 196 (promoting enmity and hatred between different groups based on religion, race), among other sections of the BNS. Police officers said the suspect was produced before a court on Friday, which remanded him to three-day police custody. The police are investigating whether more people were involved in the act. The incident came to light at 7.30 am on Friday. Soon after the news spread, people in the village went to the police station and demanded strict action. Plans afoot to develop craft & handloom village in Maheshwar
Indore: The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB) is planning to involve local artisans from Kharia village in Maheshwar through choupals, aiming to transform the village into a craft and handloom hub. In Maheshwar, the board intends to develop a textile village, cafeteria, traditionally designed home stays, and restaurants that will be operated by the local community. Kharia village in Maheshwar is home to more than 100 weavers. "A choupal is planned for next week with artisans at Kharia village in Maheshwar to understand their needs and explore how the craft tourism village could help transform their lives. This initiative will give them an economic tool to enhance their income and a platform to showcase Maheshwari textile to all discerning tourists coming to see the beauty of quaint Maheshwar and expanse of grand Narmada," said tourism and culture principal secretary Sheo Shekhar Shukla. The choupal will be attended by villagers, representatives from NGOs, and senior officials from the tourism department. MPTB has submitted a proposal to handlooms development commissioner for developing "textile tourism" in Maheshwar. The villages of Kharia and Keriakhedi in Maheshwar accommodate approximately 146 weavers. The estimated cost of the project is approximately Rs 511 crore. The proposed project will also feature an experience centre, cycling tracks and common areas, alongside scenic ghats, all aimed at enhancing local infrastructure and attracting tourists. The tourism board is also working on establishing another craft village in Dhar to promote the renowned Bagh print. Kukshi and Bagh, notable areas in Dhar district, are famous for their unique Bagh print — a traditional hand-block printing technique using natural colours and vegetable dyes.
