EastEnders star Shane Richie reveals cancer storyline has saved lives
SHANE Richie has revealed that EastEnders has saved lives following his powerful prostate cancer storyline. The actor, 61, loveable Alfie Moon in the BBC One soap, embarked on the hard-hitting storyline nearly two years ago, to raise vital awareness and encourage more men to get checked out. 2 2 One in eight men will get prostate cancer in their lifetime, according to Prostate UK, who along with Macmillan Cancer Support, worked with Shane and the EastEnders writing team on the storyline. And now, the popular actor and entertainer, reveals the huge impact Alfie's cancer story has had. He said: 'I was going to events, men my age were coming up to me, but mostly women, wives saying 'thank you so much for covering that storyline, because my husband, my brother... they don't want to go to the doctors.' 'One guy in particular, and I don't personally take credit for saving his life, but that storyline did. 'He got checked. His daughter was a big EastEnders fan, and just quite casually said, come on, we love Alfie, you should go and get checked and he did just to appease his daughter. 'He found out he had prostate cancer but it was at the early stages, had it left in any longer it could have been fatal. So if we just save one life, that's the power of soaps.' This week viewers will see Alfie once again struggle with intimacy, a common side effect of his cancer treatment, as he prepares to marry Kat, actress Jessie Wallace, 53, for a third time. Shane filmed the emotional scenes before going off on an extended break where he spent a month touring with best mates, Bradley Walsh, Brian Conley and Joe Pasquale. Dubbed The Prat Pack! the quartet performed all over the country, and provided Shane with a welcomed respite from Alfie's cancer story. Shane said: 'It was one of the most brilliant experiences I've had in a long time. I did a lot of stuff before I became Alfie so they're very accommodating, hopefully again next year I'll do the same thing, another tour.' Shane also revealed how they turned down a big money deal from streaming giant Netflix to film the tour. He said: 'We got approached by Netflix to go behind the scenes, and we were like, not a hope in hell!.' Explaining how they weren't tempted by the offer he said: 'No, because once we do it the gags are gone. Maybe in five years time if we're all still alive we may do it.' Shane was speaking on the red carpet at the British Soap Awards where EastEnders scooped eight gongs. Fans can watch the ceremony on ITVX.

Shane Richie teases another huge EastEnders comeback after it's confirmed Michelle Ryan will return as Zoe
SHANE Richie has hinted about another EastEnders star's comeback after it was revealed Michelle Ryan is returning as Zoe Slater. The soap legend opened up about the new executive producer Ben Wadey's plans as he takes over the role from Chris Clenshaw. 2 2 In the week that the BBC soap won a total of eight gongs for its 40th anniversary episodes, actor Shane teased "fireworks" and the potential for Spencer Moon to return. He told the Mirror: "Chris has told me some things. I said 'let me sit down'. "There's fireworks, there's Kat and Alfie. There is a story that is about to kick in, which will carry on through to after C hristmas. Honestly it's a big story. "If you thought the 40th was big wait until you see this story. That's all I'm saying." Talking about the potential for his on-screen brother to rejoin the soap, Shane said: "I would like him to come back. "One of my sons keeps in touch with Christopher [Parker], but he's a lawyer now. "He flies between LA and London. I would love to think that one day they might bring back Spencer, but so much is going on at the moment. Alfie could probably do without that." Christopher played Spencer Moon between 2002 and 2005 before he quit acting for good and started working as a lawyer. The Sun revealed actress Michelle, 41, is back on Albert Square later this year - two decades after quitting the soap. Michelle starred on the soap from 2000 to 2005, before moving to Hollywood after landing the lead role in a series called Bionic Woman. Actress Lacey Turner received the trophy for Best Leading Performer ahead of her impending exit from the show. The 40th anniversary also managed to clutch the Scene of the Year thanks to Angie's shock return. Steve McFadden a won a trophy for Best Dramatic Performance as Phil Mitchell, but did not attend the ceremony with Angela Wynter and Rudolph Walker also receiving prizes as Patrick and Yolande for the Best On-Screen Partnership award.

Danny Dyer opens up about his EastEnders exit after bashing the soap and his co-stars in furious tirade
reflected on his decision to quit EastEnders after he won a BAFTA Television Award on Sunday. The actor, 47, scooped Male Performance in a Comedy for his role in Mr. Bigstuff, despite facing stiff competition from Bilal Hasna, Dylan Thomas-Smith, Nabhaan Rizwan, Oliver Savell and Phil Dunning. Speaking in the press room after his win, Danny reflected on his varied career as he mused: You're only as good as the job in front of you really and it's getting the opportunities. 'It's also difficult to just get a job and so to get to this stage when you're getting awards and stuff, it is a journey.' Referencing his time on the BBC soap, he continued: 'I've been around a long time and EastEnders changed my career for so many different reasons but unless you roll the dice and you decide to see what else is out there, you never know... 'It's working out really well for me at the moment. I'm having a lovely time but it can always go tits up. I know how this game works, I've had my ups and my downs but I'm just really grateful for it.' Danny starred as Mick Carter on EastEnders for nine years, earning a whopping quarter of a million pounds a year at the height of his stint, before his explosive exit on Christmas Day 2022. However, last week, Danny didn't have much positive to say about the soap, as he slammed the workload, declared he had been 'off his nut' on prescription drugs and had ended up in rehab twice because of the show. Calling out co-stars Jessie Wallace and Shane Richie, Danny brazenly branded them 'c***s' as he claimed they had blanked both him and his onscreen wife Kellie Bright. Recalling his arrival on the soap in 2013, the Rivals star said it was not a warm welcome, describing the set as 'a very cliquey place to work'. He claimed his taking over the Queen Vic caused Jessie and Shane, who played previous pub landlords Kat Slater and Alfie Moon, to 'have the hump'. According to The Sun, Danny boldly said: 'There were a lot of people blanking us when we first turned up and me and Kellie thought "You know what, f**k these c***s, let's get together and show them something different" - we had to prove ourselves over six months.' Danny also hit out at the soap opera's storylines, particularly Mick's 'mental' romance with Janine Butcher, insisting 'a lot of it is s**t'. As well as being unimpressed with his own character's fate, he raged over the decision to kill off Lola Pearce last year from a brain tumour, which he said 'wasted' actress Danielle Harold's talents. The Sun also claimed he slammed the BBC for not giving the cast sufficient duty of care, claiming they wouldn't allow actors time off to go to a family member's funeral - allegations which the BBC has denied. Danny - who was paid around £250,000 a year on the soap - said that while the salary was good, the stars had 'no life' and claimed the dark storylines 'messed lots of people's heads up', insisting they were 'lunatics'. 'You earn good money, but you ain't got time to go to a cashpoint, you have no life,' he said. 'There's not much duty of care, that's the truth, on EastEnders there is no messing about and you've got to do it, it's the hardest part of our job.' 'It messes a lot of people's heads up, most people are off their nut, you meet them on the street, they're lunatics I'm telling you - institutionalised,' he added. He also claimed that bosses put antiseptic into the beer barrels in the Queen Vic in order to prevent him from drinking from them. In response to Danny's comments, a spokesperson for EastEnders stated: 'We would never discuss an individual's private matters, however, we do not recognise these claims. 'EastEnders has extremely robust and well-established procedures in place to safeguard the welfare of everyone who works on the show.' Danny also spoke about EastEnders on the BAFTAs red carpet. He told Sky News: 'It's a roll of the dice leaving EastEnders it gives you sustainability but it is a risk and it has paid off for me. 'I don't know what is going on at the minute, I'm just rolling with it at the minute, it is a bit odd. I'm so proud of this Sky show and I'm happy to represent that show and I've got the Rivals lot here, I've just seen them. 'Two very different shows, I've been around a long time and I've done good and some bad stuff. Danny Dyer hits out at EastEnders' storylines
Danny Dyer has blasted some of the "s***" storylines he was given on 'EastEnders'. The 47-year-old actor quit the soap as Mick Carter in 2022 after nine years in Walford and he admitted he was particularly unimpressed when his alter ego embarked on a romance with killer Janine Butcher (Charlie Brooks). Speaking at a charity night at Wimbledon Football Club on Friday (09.05.25), The Sun on Sunday newspaper reports he said: 'You've got to sell this s***, and a lot of it is s***. You're like, 'What the f*** is this?'. Mick with Janine was mental.' Danny and co-star Kellie Bright, who played his on-screen wife Linda Carter, found the soap "very cliquey" when they started and he accused Jessie Wallace and Shane Richie of giving them a frosty reception when they joined. He said: 'When I first came in it was a very cliquey place to work. 'We took the pub (Queen Vic) over from Shane and Jesse. 'Kat and Alfie had an 11 year run and then they wanted to get rid of them so they brought us in and they had the hump. "They were getting prickly about us coming in. 'I was like, 'What is the matter with these people? I have not made this call.' "There were a lot of people blanking us when we first turned up and me and Kellie thought 'You know what, f*** these c****. Let's get together and show them something different.'' 'We had to prove ourselves over six months. 'It was hard work. Then a new producer came in and sacked a load of people.' Danny used to enjoy "a few lagers" on set from the Queen Vic, but when bosses found out, they took measures to make sure it became undrinkable, adding antiseptic to the beer barrels. He said: 'When I first arrived on set I was slipping around the side and having a few lagers and they found out so they started to put TCP into the beer. 'I wasn't off my nut. I had a drink every now and again.'
