136 cybercriminals arrested in statewide crackdown

Chennai: In a coordinated crackdown on online fraud, the cybercrime wing arrested 136 cybercriminals across the state as part of Operation Thiraineekku-II which relied on scientific profiling, real-time monitoring, and financial trail mapping. What made the operation stand out was its back-end precision. Officers used the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) of the Union ministry of home affairs to profile accused peopke based on digital footprints, complaint data, and transaction histories. At the same time, bank fund trail analysis was deployed to detect and track mule accounts (accounts used to route fraudulently obtained money). The three-day operation, which began on June 2 and concluded in the early hours of June 4, led to arrests linked to 159 cybercrime cases statewide. Among the accused were six key players behind more than 30 shell companies and 100 bank mule agents. These are people who lend or sell their bank accounts to scamsters to move illicit funds and obscure the original source. During the raids, police seized 125 mobile phones, 304 bank accounts, 88 cheque books, 107 debit and credit cards, and 35 desktops — assets central to the functioning of fraudulent networks. The operation built on the earlier Thiraineekku-I effort in Dec 2024. Officials said investigations are still underway to track additional suspects, retrieve defrauded money, and identify inter-state linkages. Calling it one of the largest operations of its kind in the country, DGP Shankar Jiwal commended the cybercrime wing.

Police officers told not to post photos in uniform on social media

Police officers in Tamil Nadu have been directed not to post their photographs in uniform in social media handles. They have also been told to refrain from sharing confidential information and details of criminal cases in interviews to Television/YouTube channels, podcasts etc in personal capacity. In an order issued to all officers in the rank of Superintendent of Police and above in the State, the Director-General of Police and Head of Police Force Shankar Jiwal said it had come to notice that some officers were posting official matters, including important duties and responsibilities, and their photographs in official uniform, on their personal social media handles. A few officers had given interviews to social media channels in their personal capacity and shared official information relating to cases, victims, accused persons, etc. 'It has also come to the knowledge that some officers attend private functions in official uniform and share sensitive official information,' Mr. Jiwal said and referred to the All India Services (Conduct) Rules and the Tamil Nadu Subordinate Police Officers' Conduct Rules which restrained them from doing so. Mr. Jiwal said going by the conduct rules a police officer invited or intending to participate in a television programme or deliver a broadcast talk should intimate to the government of the particulars relating to the programme or the subject on which he/she proposed to talk. If need be, the entire content to be published should be submitted to the authorities concerned for approval. The DGP said wherever required, approval of senior officers in hierarchy should be obtained by subordinate officers for vetting content and obtaining clearance for participation in private functions and interviews. In case of any violation, action would be taken under the provisions of the conduct rules. 'All officers shall strictly adhere to these instructions and also issue necessary instructions to others within their jurisdiction in this regard,' he said. According to police sources, another advisory was issued asking Commissioners/Superintendents of Police to give short video interviews explaining the content of official press releases issued on various matters.

Mental well-being programme launched in west zones for Tamil Nadu cops

Coimbatore: Director general of police (DGP) Shankar Jiwal inaugurated 'Magizhchi', a mental well-being programme for the police personnel and their families in the eight districts in the west zone, at PSGR Krishnammal College for Women at Peelamedu here on Saturday. Addressing the police personnel and their family members, the DGP said, "People are hesitant to reveal that they have mental health issues, as they think others will treat them badly. Earlier, people lived in joint families, and the stress level was low. In this era of nuclear families, the stress level is high. If the mental health of a cop is affected, their service will also be affected. This wellness programme aims at ensuring better mental health for cops and their families. It will help them in their professional and personal lives." He said similar mental well-being programmes could be introduced for the paramilitary force personnel. "Lakhs of people are serving in the paramilitary forces in India. Through newspapers we know some of them commit suicide when denied leave. Now that Tamil Nadu has given a unique programme for its police force, the paramilitary forces could replicate the same." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gentle Japanese hair growth method for men and women's scalp Hair's Rich Learn More Undo City police commissioner A Saravana Sundar, inspector general of police (west zone) Senthil Kumar and other police officers participated in the event. T.N. DGP urges police personnel to derive utmost utility of ‘Magilchi' programme

Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu, Shankar Jiwal on Saturday called upon police personnel to derive optimal utility of the 'Magilchi' programme and 'Magilchi' wellness centre, to safeguard their mental health. Unlike in the past when elders in joint family system used to provide guidance, the mental pressure being experienced in nuclear families was not being addressed with due care, due to inhibitions. Mental anxiety, if not addressed, will go on to affect the family, the DGP cautioned, calling upon the police personnel to take utmost care of their mental health. The initiative has already been launched in Chennai, Madurai and Tiruvarur, and will be rolled out in Vellore next, the DGP said. C. Rama Subramanian, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist, and State Nodal Officer for the Magilchi Programme highlighted the intended objectives of the initiative. Senior police officials across Western region took part in the programme.
