The 'Thinking Out Loud' artist, aged 34, delighted the crowd on Saturday with an impromptu live set on the New Music Stage, showcasing his skills with a loop station to create layers of sound for his songs instead of using a backing track. ‌ Kicking off with 'Castle On The Hill', his set featured beloved tracks such as 'Perfect', 'The A Team', and 'Shape Of You'. ‌ Addressing the audience at Sefton Park, he said: "I'm glad you turned up. I know this was a secret." He playfully warned the crowd: "I'm gonna play some songs that hopefully you know; If you don't know, it's gonna be a long hour for you." Article continues below Sheeran highlighted the uniqueness of his performance by noting: "Everything you hear today is completely live. There's no backing track whatsoever." He explained the live nature of his music-making: "It's made live on the spot – control of my feet – and at the end it's deleted and it won't be the same at the next show." He described the technical process: "The way that it works is you press record like this, and when you press play, it plays back and loops, and you can add layers on top of it." Article continues below In a moment of authenticity during his latest song 'Azizam', Sheeran had to restart his loop recording, assuring the audience: "I'm going to have to do this again again. This is how you know it's live. One more time." With a history of success including 14 UK number one singles and eight UK number one albums, and having headlined the previous year's Big Weekend festival in Coventry, Sheeran concluded his unexpected set with 'Bad Habits'. The Saturday line-up at Sefton Park includes Sam Fender, Sugababes, Tom Odell and Blossoms, while Sunday's performances will feature Jade, Mumford & Sons, Haim, Wet Leg and Tate McRae.

Ed Sheeran plays surprise set at Big Weekend in UK

Ed Sheeran has joined the BBC Radio 1 Big Weekend line-up in Liverpool for a secret set. The singer, 34, surprised fans on Saturday with a live set on the New Music Stage in which he used his trademark loop station to build up layers of his songs rather than play to a backing track. The set opened with Castle On The Hill and included hit songs Perfect, The A Team and Shape Of You. He told the audience at Sefton Park: "I'm glad you turned up. I know this was a secret. "I'm gonna play some songs that hopefully you know; If you don't know, it's gonna be a long hour for you. The singer added that by using his loop station, his set would be unique: "Everything you hear today is completely live. There's no backing track whatsoever. "It's made live on the spot - control of my feet - and at the end it's deleted and it won't be the same at the next show. "The way that it works is you press record like this, and when you press play, it plays back and loops, and you can add layers on top of it." During his performance of latest song Azizam, Sheeran stopped and restarted his loop recording, telling the crowd: "I'm going to have to do this again. This is how you know it's live. One more time." Sheeran headlined the Big Weekend music festival in Coventry in 2022, finished his surprise set with Bad Habits. Also on Saturday's line-up in Sefton Park are Sam Fender, Sugababes, Tom Odell and Blossoms, with Jade, Mumford & Sons, Haim, Wet Leg and Tate McRae playing on Sunday.

Dua Lipa named most played artist across UK TV and radio for second time

The singer, 29, known for hits including Dance The Night and Levitating, has ousted Shape Of You singer Ed Sheeran from the top spot, ending his three-year run at number one. Sheeran, 34, who recently shared details of an eighth studio album, now sits at number three with US pop star Taylor Swift the second most played artist of 2024. Lipa said: 'It's a real honour to be named the most played artist in the UK for the second time. '2024 was an incredible year and I'm so grateful to everyone who has supported my music on the radio, TV and in venues around the country. Thanks also to PPL for continuing to support artists and our music.' Lipa, who has won several Brit Awards and three Grammys, headlined Glastonbury Festival last year shortly following the release of her third studio album Radical Optimism. She is the youngest person to feature on this year's Sunday Times 40 Under 40 Rich List, making her one of the wealthiest musicians in the UK. Her 2018 hit single One Kiss with Calvin Harris remains her most played song of all time, averaging 55 plays per day across UK radio and TV. She previously appeared at the top of PPL's most played artist chart in 2020, the same year she released the album Future Nostalgia, which contains hits Don't Start Now and Hallucinate. Her 2024 single Houdini, which went to number two on the UK chart, features on PPL's list of most played tracks of that year, coming in at number six. Leading the charge at number one, however, is Noah Kahan's Stick Season, which spent seven weeks at the top of the UK singles chart last year. This is followed with Lose Control by US artist Teddy Swims at number two and Beautiful Things by Benson Boone at number three. British singer Myles Smith, who was named Brits Rising Star ahead of this year's Brit Awards, features at number five with his song Stargazing. Peter Leathem, PPL chief executive, said: 'Congratulations once again to Dua Lipa for leading PPL's most played artist chart, and to Noah Kahan for securing the most played track of the year. 'British artists continue to perform well, making up 70% of the top 10 – proving they have staying power across the nation's broadcasters, businesses and public spaces. 'It is also fantastic to see fresh UK talent such as Myles Smith make a big splash in the top five most played tracks, showing there is plenty of promise in UK music going forward.' Ed Sheeran sends fans WILD with an impromptu performance on the streets of Sheffield

Ed Sheeran sent fans into a frenzy with a surprise street performance in Sheffield on Saturday. The Shape Of You popstar, 34, got behind the decks in the centre of the city with DJ AG for one of his signature performances livestreamed on TikTok. Ed, wearing a long sleeve Corteiz T-shirt and a black leather jacket, arrived to much fanfare alongside London rapper JME before performing a mix of his biggest hits and a series of remixes. And the Ipswich-born singer's performance didn't disappoint, with Ed sending the northern crowd wild as he rapped: 'When you want to see me, when you want to see me, I'm in Sheffield town this evening.' He also shocked supporters with a remix of Gyptian's 2010 song Hold You (Hold Yuh), before transitioning into one of his own much-loved songs hits I Don't Care. But arguably the most popular performance of the night was Ed's rendition of Shape Of You which left elated fans screaming afterwards. The upbeat setlist also included performances of Peru, You Need Me, I Don't Need You and a host of collaborations with Man Don't Care MC JME. The sensational performance left viewers on social media similarly impressed, with many taking to the comments section of DJ AG's Instagram to praise Ed for the 'iconic' appearance. Fans wrote: 'Guys worth 300m and took his time out to show support. What a man', 'It was so clear Ed was in his element there, we love to see it', 'Where do I apply to be eds friend because he just seems so cool and genuine', 'Thats what I love about Ed he is the humblest guy always giving back and even with his mega celebrity status he never thinks any more of himself this man is pure gold a national treasure after Sir David', 'One thing bout it Ed is gonna deliver some clean live vocals', The sensational performance left viewers on social media similarly impressed, with many taking to the comments section of DJ AG's Instagram to praise Ed for the 'iconic' appearance 'Ed back where it all started ! The street - one of the best talents out of the UK by far'. The shock set in Sheffield comes ahead of the release of Sheeran's eighth studio album, Play, which is scheduled to drop on 12 September this year. Just last month, the Thinking Out Loud vocalist also surprised commuters in London with an impromptu gig outside King's Cross station. Dressed in a vibrant pink T-shirt, Ed setup in-front of a large pink heart emblazoned with the title of his new single, Azizam. Fans were delighted as Ed played his acoustic guitar and belted out hit songs including Shape Of You, Perfect and Bad Habits. He also appeared in his home county of Suffolk earlier this month, bringing his guitar for a performance in an Ipswich pub. The performance came after the release of Old Phone, another single off the new album. Ed shared clips of him singing on his Instagram, captioning the post: 'Brought the Old Phone for a homecoming show in Ipswich today. 'Thank you to @fishclawband for rocking it with me and for everyone who came down. Old Phone out now x.' The singer is far from the first artist to shock fans with a street performance with DJ AG however. The London-born DJ has welcomed a host of artists onto his platform including Skepta, JME, Craig David and most recently Jessie J, who sent fans wild with a performance of her hit song Price Tag. The female singer also performed hits such as Flashlight and her 2014 collaboration with American superstars Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj, Bang Bang.
