Katigorah gang attack: 1 gets 8 years in jail, 8 others get 3-month terms

Silchar: A Cachar court sentenced a man to eight years in prison and awarded three-month jail terms to eight others in the Katigorah gang attack case that led to the death of one person and left several others injured sixteen years ago. The verdict was delivered by the fast-track court of additional district and sessions judge Bankim Sharma on Monday in connection with the incident that took place on Aug 26, 2009, at Nij Katigorah in Cachar. According to the prosecution, Sharif Uddin Barbhuiya (52) and eight others stormed the residence of their neighbour Sahir Ahmed Barbhuiya and attacked Sahir's family with weapons and sticks. Three members of the family — Mokbul Ahmed, Mamon Ahmed, and Faruk Ahmed — sustained serious injuries in the attack. Neighbours Nur Ahmed, Abdul Kuddus, and Abdul Salam, who tried to intervene, were also assaulted. In his FIR, Sahir alleged that the attackers looted Rs 20,000 in cash and gold ornaments from the house during the assault. One of the injured, Abdul Kuddus, later succumbed to his injuries. The eight others — Badrul Islam Barbhuiya, Moklisur Rahman Barbhuiya, Sahin Uddin Barbhuiya, Mohiuddin Barbhuiya, Manik Uddin Barbhuiya, Dilwar Hussain Barbhuiya alias Mithu, Mustak Ahmed, and Sab Uddin Barbhuiya — were convicted under Sections 323, 447, and 147 of BNS for assault, criminal trespass, and rioting.
