Egypt arrests nearly 50 drivers for drug use in clampdown after deadly crashes

Egyptian authorities arrested 48 drivers for drug use during a nationwide clampdown aimed at improving road safety, particularly on the Regional Ring Road, commonly referred to as the "Road of Death." The arrests were part of a sweeping 24-hour campaign by the Interior Ministry, which tested 355 drivers for narcotics and uncovered multiple violations, the ministry said in a statement on Sunday. The campaign comes in response to nationwide outrage over a series of deadly accidents on the Regional Ring Road, which connects six provinces and has become notorious for its high accident rate. The road has been made unsafe by poorly managed repair work, currently being carried out by the state, that forces two-way traffic into a single lane on a 110-kilometre stretch of the road. The crackdown also resulted in 744 traffic violations on the Regional Ring Road alone, including driving against traffic, overloading passengers, and failing to meet licensing requirements. In addition to the 48 drivers arrested for illegal drugs, 36 individuals wanted for a total of 136 court judgments were detained, and seven vehicles were impounded for serious violations, the ministry said. It promised to continue the crackdown. On Sunday morning, another crash occurred on the Regional Ring Road near the village of Al-Naamana in Sharqia province. The incident involved the collision of a bus carrying 26 passengers, a lorry, and two microbuses. The crash caused damage to the vehicles but no injuries or fatalities were recorded, according to the Sharqia Security Directorate. Police detained the drivers involved and launched an investigation. While no lives were lost in Sunday's crash, it has reignited concerns about the road's safety. On Saturday evening, nine people died and 11 were injured in a head-on collision between two minibuses on the road. On June 26, 19 people, including 18 teenage girls, were killed when a lorry crossed into oncoming traffic and crushed their minibus in Menoufia province. President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has ordered the temporary closure of all repair zones on the Regional Ring Road and instructed authorities to make safe detours available. In a statement following Saturday's crash, he called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, including oversight of lorry drivers and expanded drug testing.

Horrifying video: Father brutally beats his child in Egypt

ALBAWABA - A horrifying video circulating on social media sparked anger across Egypt after capturing a father brutally beating his child on a balcony located in 10th of Ramadan City, in Sharqia. Many Egyptian netizens took to platforms such as X (formerly known as Twitter) to condemn the act and once again voice their concerns about the rise of domestic violence cases in Egypt over the years. The child was heard crying for help and begging his father to stop. However, the father kept on brutally assaulting him, despite many attempts at begging. A neighbor was heard urging the individual who captured the video to share the incident on social media so that the father would suffer the consequences of his actions. Caution: Disturbing footage below Later, the video was monitored by the relevant authorities, prompting an investigation into the issue at hand. Additionally, authorities successfully identified the family, the location of the incident, and began taking the necessary measures against them. The police arrested both the father and the mother after neighbors disclosed that they had been repeatedly assaulting their children without anyone intervening. Local reports revealed that the father assaulted his children as a method of "disciplining" them for their wrong actions. The father was teaching his son "a lesson" because he stole his brother's phone to buy cigarettes, which triggered the brutal beatings captured in the video. While many condemn the act, the victim's brother took to his father's defense and said in a Facebook post, "Dad is affectionate, but my brother made a mistake and had to be punished." He added, "My little brother did something wrong and my father sat him down and explained it to him once or twice, but he insisted on doing it again, which prompted my father to discipline him like any father raising his son. I condemn all the comments made by citizens on social media. No one knows anything. They just watched the video on Facebook, but no one understood, and they are all saying whatever they want."

Egyptian PM honours 'Superman' who drove burning fuel truck away from gas station

When a fuel supply truck caught fire at a gas station in Egypt on June 1, its driver faced a grim choice. Khaled Mohamed Shawky, the driver of the truck which was parked at a gas station in the city of 10th of Ramadan, could have chosen to flee the vehicle and save his life from an imminent disaster. But he instead chose to sacrifice his life to save the lives of residents in the city, located in Egypt's Sharqia Governorate. In a heroic behaviour reflecting quick thinking and selflessness, Khaled drove his burning truck away from the gas station — an act that earned widespread praise from both official and public circles in Egypt. Footage that spread rapidly on social media showed the truck engulfed in flames, with thick columns of smoke billowing from it near the gas station, which is situated in a residential area. After the incident, Khaled was transported to the hospital with severe burns and critical injuries. On Monday, he passed away. Ahl Masr Burn Hospital reported that Khaled had suffered burns covering over 60% of his body, in addition to severe respiratory damage caused by inhaling toxic fumes and gases from the fire. Official recognition Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly mourned the heroic driver and issued directives to grant his family a generous financial reward, an exceptional pension, in appreciation and recognition of his bravery. In a statement issued by the Egyptian Cabinet, Khaled was described as 'a symbol of sacrifice and swift action in an extremely dangerous situation—a positive response that prevented many casualties and damage, preserving numerous lives and properties.' In recognition of what Khaled did, authorities also decided to name a street in the city after him. Several Egyptian ministries announced rewards to Khaled's family, with the Ministry of Labour granting 200,000 Egyptian pounds (around Dh15,000). The Egyptian Superman On the popular front, many social media users praised the heroic act, with some sharing edited images of Khaled dressed as Superman. One user wrote, 'He died while performing an act of the highest bravery and humanity. People like him must be honoured and remembered well. It's our duty to preserve his rights and ensure a dignified life for his family". Another said: "Some people die, but their virtues do not." Khaled is survived by three daughters and one son.
