‘Palash' programme boosts tribal education in state
1 2 Ranchi: The Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC), in collaboration with the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (Unicef) and the Language Learning Foundation, is implementing the Palash programme across 1,041 schools in eight districts of the state. The initiative provides primary education for classes I to V in tribal languages and mother tongues in alignment with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) and the National Curriculum Framework (NCF). The approach ensures that children receive instruction in a language they understand from the earliest stages of schooling, thereby strengthening foundational literacy and numeracy skills. Under the programme, 1,064 teachers, block resource persons (BRPs), and cluster resource persons (CRPs) were trained to deliver lessons in five tribal languages — Santhali, Mundari, Kurukh, Kharia, and Ho. Specially designed multilingual textbooks and workbooks were distributed to participating schools to make learning more accessible and culturally relevant. Currently, Palash is benefiting around 35,400 children in the districts of Simdega, Gumla, Khunti, Lohardaga, Latehar, Dumka, Sahibganj and West Singhbhum. Since its inception in 2022 with 259 schools across seven districts, the programme has expanded significantly, reaching more learners each year. JEPC state project director Shashi Ranjan said, "Plans are underway to include five more districts in the coming years and to increase the number of participating schools, thereby broadening the impact of mother-tongue-based education for the state's tribal communities." Unicef's education specialist, Parul Sharma, said, "Palash is not only improving academic outcomes but also fostering pride in children's linguistic and cultural identity. Learning in one's mother tongue builds confidence and creates a strong foundation." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). State to soon implement ‘No Bag Day' in primary schools
Ranchi: Jharkhand is soon to join the league of states implementing the 'No Bag Day' concept for primary school students. The state education and literacy department has begun preparations to roll out a programme aimed at reducing the academic burden on students and promoting experiential learning. Under this new initiative, students will be relieved from carrying school bags to school on a particular day of the week. Instead, the day will focus on engaging children in vocational and skill-based activities, offering them a refreshing break from routine classroom teaching. School education and literacy minister Ramdas Soren recently said that the department is soon going to roll out the programme for students of Class 1 to 8, in an attempt to encourage their physical and psychological well-being. Speaking on the development of the programme implementation, state project director of the department, Shashi Ranjan, told TOI that while upper-primary level students, from Classes 6 to 8, currently observe ten 'No Bag Days' annually, the programme will now be extended to students at the primary level as well. "National Education Policy, 2020 mandates to introduce students to skill and vocational training. Students in the upper-primary level are already getting a 10-day relief from bringing bags to schools. On those days, schools invite local artisans to teach students art and crafts or take them on tours to prominent places near schools and do various other activities. Likewise, planning is ongoing to roll out the programme at the primary level as well, to promote activity-based education among students," said the state project director. He added that the programme currently is in the planning stage, and the department is formulating directions for the schools on activities to be done on bagless days. "Before implementing the programme, we first have to streamline all aspects for smooth functioning. To promote physical activities among students, the department has formulated a detailed teacher guidance book with class and age-appropriate day-to-day activities for the students," Ranjan said. The department is yet to finalise the day to observe the programme. However, an official, on condition of anonymity, said that the department might roll out the programme from next week.
