Shane Gillis roast of Shedeur Sanders at ESPYs goes viral: Was it a joke or a reality check?

David Richard / AP file Only Shane Gillis could light a fire on national TV and smile while doing it. At the 2025 ESPYs, the comedian took the stage with the subtlety of a sledgehammer and Shedeur Sanders caught the brunt of it. His joke? A not-so-gentle jab at Shedeur's jersey retirement at Colorado and the ever-lingering whispers of nepotism. And yeah, the internet is very divided over it. Shane Gillis calls out Shedeur Sanders' jersey retirement with a brutal one-liner During his monologue, Gillis didn't waste time going there. He delivered this line with classic deadpan delivery: 'Shedeur Sanders had his jersey number retired at Colorado this year, and people are saying it's because of nepotism because of his father, and it's not. It's because he went 13‑12 over his career and he almost won the Alamo Bowl. Definitely not nepotism… right?' — NFL_DovKleiman (@NFL_DovKleiman) Ouch. The crowd gave that uncomfortable half-laugh, half-gasp you hear when everyone's wondering if the cameras will cut away. But for those who've followed Shedeur's journey or the drama surrounding his jersey being retired,, it hit right in the middle of a long-brewing controversy. The jersey retirement was already controversial way before Gillis said anything Back in April, Colorado shocked fans by announcing they were retiring two jersey numbers: Travis Hunter's #12 and Shedeur Sanders' #2. The twist? Both players had just wrapped up their second season with the Buffs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! Techno Mag Learn More Undo While Hunter's Heisman-level performance made some sense, Shedeur's 13–12 record had critics raising their eyebrows. And yeah, being the head coach's son didn't help quiet the 'nepotism' narrative. Several former Colorado players publicly questioned the move. One called it 'asinine.' Others pointed out that legends like Eric Bieniemy and Darian Hagan didn't even get that honor. So, when Gillis called it out, he wasn't exactly plucking a joke out of thin air, he was roasting a very real, very public debate. This isn't just about one joke, it's about legacy, favoritism, and where the line is drawn This whole drama taps into a much bigger conversation: when does honoring talent become favoritism? Deion Sanders has always been a headline machine whether it's cutting nearly an entire roster or elevating his sons to top spots. And while Shedeur has the stats and spotlight to back up his NFL draft pick with the Browns, many still question whether Colorado retired his jersey because of his numbers or his name. That's what made Gillis's roast land the way it did, it wasn't just a punchline. It was a mic drop on a debate that's far from over. Proposed trade sends Colorado Buffaloes football legend Shedeur Sanders to Jaguars to reunite with Travis Hunter

The hype for Shedeur Sanders this offseason took an unexpected detour after a pair of speeding violations, but the 23-year-old signal-caller remains the most discussed rookie heading into training camp. He, albeit theoretically, has a chance to ascend the Cleveland Browns' depth chart and eventually become the club's starting quarterback next season. Advertisement Outside of drafting him, the franchise hasn't exactly signaled that it has unwavering faith in the Colorado product. He's yet to practice with the starting offense, and given Joe Flacco's experience and Dillon Gabriel's superior draft position, he will likely start the campaign as the QB4. But could another team needing a spark roll the dice and try to make a move for Shedeur? On a recent "Say What Needs to Be Said" livestream, former NFL All-Pro corner Asante Samuel Sr. analyzed the idea of sending Shedeur to Jacksonville to pair with his college teammate, Travis Hunter. "Trevor Lawrence has two number one receivers—is he going to be able to get them the ball?" Samuel said. "I think not. Lawrence isn't as good as he was as a college prospect." Advertisement Samuel went on to suggest that Shedeur going to Jacksonville would be impossible because no other organization would want to take on Lawrence's contract. The Jags' gunslinger is under contract through 2030, with a cap hit north of over $70M in his last two years of the deal. He's still young enough and has the ideal tools that some franchise would have interest in Lawrence, but not at that price. Although seeing the Hunter-to-Shedeur connection at the pro level would be must-watch television, it's not happening anytime soon. Jacksonville is clearly committed to Lawrence for the next few years, and Shedeur should worry about trying to compete with Gabriel before attempting to replace a recent first overall pick.

Browns Rookie Shedeur Sanders Must Overcome 'Mailed It In' Reputation

Browns Rookie Shedeur Sanders Must Overcome 'Mailed It In' Reputation originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cleveland Browns QB conundrum will work itself out, as these things always do. As the Browns are entering training camp in July with four quarterbacks (not counting the wounded Deshaun Watson) battling for the starting job in Week 1, it is simply too early for management or the coaching staff to have privately committed to one (or two) over the others. Advertisement But it is never too early for one of those candidates, controversial rookie Shedeur Sanders, to take to heart the criticism that is the reason behind his dramatic slide from a possible first-round pick in the April NFL Draft to a lowly fifth-round selection. The criticism might be unfair; his famous father, the legendary Deion Sanders, certainly thinks so. But the criticism is still the reason ... and it can be a wake-up call for Shedeur to understand how he is perceived. In the exclusive Browns examination in the Athlon Sports 2025 NFL Preview magazine, which is available online and at newsstands now, one NFL scout tells us that while Sanders has the ability to eventually become the Browns' starter. ... Advertisement His pre-Draft presentation was bothersome to NFL teams, 'Shedeur Sanders is a very polarizing guy,' the scout said. 'We didn't like his attitude and how he handled the draft process. He wasn't prepared. He mailed it in at every step. He didn't take it seriously enough.' The scout adds that 'Joe Flacco is their best bet to be competitive ... He still throws a good ball.' Can we envision Shedeur ending up out of the mix? Of course, we can... just like with any other fifth-round rookie who might best be suited for the practice squad. The Browns took Dillon Gabriel in Round 3, meaning they liked him above Sanders. And they acquired former first-round pick Kenny Pickett, who on paper might be the best answer of all. Advertisement For now, for Sanders? He needs not just to put behind him "polarizing'' and "attitude'' and "mailed it in'' concerns. He needs to listen to them. He needs to learn from them. The exclusive Browns scouting report in the Athlon Sports 2025 NFL Preview magazine is available online and at newsstands now. Cam Newton slams Shedeur Sanders over reckless speeding, warns NFL rookies of life-threatening choices

Cam Newton has strongly criticized Shedeur Sanders for his recent speeding violations (Getty Images & Associative Press) Former NFL MVP Cam Newton didn't hold back when addressing Shedeur Sanders' recent string of speeding violations. Sanders, the Cleveland Browns' rookie quarterback, received two tickets in June—first for driving 91 mph in a 65 mph zone, and then, shockingly, just days later for going 101 mph in a 60 mph zone. The second violation reportedly happened during rookie orientation, drawing even more scrutiny. Cam Newton speaks from experience as he blasts Shedeur Sanders for dangerous driving Sanders owned up to his actions, admitting, 'I made some not great choices. I learn from them.' But Newton, on his 4th & 1 podcast, went further—calling the behavior reckless and addressing it as a serious cautionary tale for all young athletes. 'You can't pay your way out when the Grim Reaper shows up' — Newton's emotional warning — 4thand1show (@4thand1show) Newton's concern wasn't performative. He shared his own harrowing story of being involved in a car crash earlier this year, which shook him deeply. 'Driving a hundred? I've done that, bro,' Newton admitted. 'Going 101? That's extremely dangerous. You can't pay your way when you're trying to negotiate with the Grim Reaper.' Speaking directly to young players like Shedeur, he emphasized the value of life over luxury: 'I see a Rolls Royce, I see a Ferrari, I see a Bentley… but right now, I don't value those things. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Couple Decide To Go On A Diet, Here They Are A Year Later Daily Sport X Undo I value being able to say that I'm putting my children in position to never have to depend on football the way I needed to.' Shilo Sanders trolls his brother as fans split over reaction Adding a lighter twist to a serious situation, Shedeur's brother, Shilo Sanders, poked fun at the incident in a vlog filmed in Tampa: 'We gotta be careful crossing the street, especially if Shedeur is out here.' Shedeur laughed it off during a Twitch stream, saying, 'The situation wasn't funny, but how he said it was.' Despite the controversies, the Browns are handling the matter internally and have not issued any formal penalties. Shedeur's reps and depth chart status remain unchanged—for now.
