‘Shelby Oaks' trailer: Chilling first look at Chris Stuckmann's found-footage horror debut

The first official trailer for Shelby Oaks, the debut feature from YouTuber-turned-filmmaker Chris Stuckmann, has been released ahead of its theatrical premiere this October. The horror film, backed by Neon, is generating interest as the most crowd-funded horror project in Kickstarter history. Shelby Oaks stars Camille Sullivan as Mia, a woman searching for her sister Riley (Sarah Durn), who vanished while investigating paranormal activity. The trailer introduces the film's central mystery, revealing found footage elements and a disturbing VHS tape that propels Mia into the titular town of Shelby Oaks. There, she begins to uncover dark secrets tied to their shared past and a potentially real childhood demon. The film's visual style leans on handheld camera work, faux-documentary framing, and traditional found footage techniques, drawing comparisons to earlier genre entries like The Blair Witch Project and The Ring. Stuckmann, best known for his YouTube film reviews, has cited those influences in shaping the tone and pacing of his first feature. Neon has scheduled Shelby Oaks for a theatrical release on October 3, positioning it as part of the studio's Halloween slate. Earlier this year, the production underwent additional filming in Ohio, reportedly costing around $1 million, to increase the level of horror and intensity. These reshoots added more blood and gore to the final cut, aligning it more closely with audience expectations. The film is produced by Aaron B. Koontz, Cameron Burns, and Ashleigh Snead, with executive producers including Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy. The supporting cast features Brendan Sexton III, Keith David, and Michael Beach. Music is composed by The Newton Brothers. Shelby Oaks also incorporates elements from the 'Paranormal Paranoids' online video series, which served as inspiration for the film's story and promotional campaign. With over two million YouTube subscribers, Stuckmann has kept fans updated on the project's development since its crowdfunding success.

Unsettling Trailer for the Horror Mystery Thriller SHELBY OAKS From Producer Mike Flanagan — GeekTyrant

The official trailer for Shelby Oaks has finally dropped, and it looks like it'll be a damn scary film. Backed by producer Mike Flanagan, this horror mystery thriller marks the feature directorial debut of YouTube film critic-turned-filmmaker Chris Stuckmann. The film made waves during its festival run at Fantasia and FrightFest, and now it's creeping into select theaters on October 3rd, 2025. With a heavy dose of psychological dread and unnerving silence-in-the-dark moments, Shelby Oaks is shaping up to be an atmospheric descent into obsession and paranoia. The story centers on Mia, played by Camille Sullivan, who becomes consumed with finding her sister Riley, a YouTube ghost hunter who vanished with her crew back in 2008. That mystery fuels the spine-chilling narrative: 'Who took Riley Brennan?' Fantasia describes the plot like this: "That's the question asked by millions of devoted, even obsessed fans of the popular YouTube series Paranormal Paranoids... Conspiracy theories have run rampant over the years, but none are more determined to get to the truth than Riley's sister, Mia... 'Closure, however, refuses to be found as a series of shocking events opens the door to a deeper mystery... one that leads Mia to follow her ghost-hunting sister's footsteps down a path to confront demons of the past for answers that can only be found somewhere within the darkness of Shelby Oaks..." It's explained that, 'Stuckmann proves that he's been paying close attention to all those movies he's reviewed over the years, as the results are impressively moody and deftly scripted throughout.' With a cast that includes Michael Beach, Keith David, Sarah Durn, and Brendan Sexton III, Shelby Oaks looks like the kind of slow-burning supernatural horror that is going to stick in audiences heads. Stuckmann's transition from critic to creator is already making an impact, and this film may be the next big indie horror hit to keep your eyes on.

The movie follows Sullivan's Mia as she goes on a quest to find her missing sister Riley (Durn). Riley had been taking her "first foray into the abandoned town of Shelby Oaks" for an apparent documentary series she was working on called The Paranormal Paranoids when she disappeared. When a man shows up on Mia's doorstep with a tape from Riley, Mia goes on a mission to find her. "I've been searching for Riley for the last 12 years," Mia says in the trailer released Monday. "I know my sister's not dead." Mike Flanagan, well known for his work on The Haunting of Hill House, executive produces the movie, which marks film critic's Chris Stuckmann's directorial debut. Shelby Oaks opens in theaters Oct. 3.

‘Shelby Oaks' Drops a Freaky First Trailer

When Mike Flanagan signs onto a debut horror film as an executive producer, that's going to make genre fans sit up and take notice. Shelby Oaks hits theaters in October, and not only does writer-director Chris Stuckmann have Flanagan's stamp of approval, but he also now has an excellently chilling first trailer to further entice spooky-cinema junkies. Using what looks to be a blend of narrative and found footage, not to mention true crime and ghostly terrors, Shelby Oaks follows Mia (Camille Sullivan) on her increasingly disturbing search for her missing sister—who we see poking around an abandoned, supposedly haunted town as part of a paranormal investigation. It's a mystery that Mia's determined to solve, even as all signs seem to indicate she should stay as far away from Shelby Oaks as possible. Distributor Neon is doing a little bit of Longlegs-style finessing with its marketing, releasing a series of teaser posters that are both alarmingly enigmatic and undeniably full of dread: The rest of the cast includes Brendan Sexton III, Michael Beach, and the legendary Keith David. Shelby Oaks, which marks the debut of film critic turned filmmaker Stuckmann, had its premiere at last year's Fantasia International Film Festival. It hits theaters October 3. Want more io9 news?
