Winchester literacy program promotes students reading all summer long

WINCHESTER, Va. () — The end of the school year does not mean students' books stay closed throughout the summer — especially in the Shenandoah Valley. There, a community initiative to promote reading is gaining popularity, and not just in northern Virginia, but across the state line in Maryland, too. For years, the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation in Winchester has funded an annual 'Rockin' the Library' event to promote literacy. Shenandoah University professor Karen Huff has taken the lead on community outreach for the initiative. 'The reason for doing Rockin' the Library is to help with summer reading [and] to make sure children are aware of what's going on at the library,' she explained. Motorcyclist seriously hurt after two-vehicle crash in Montgomery County, officials say Student volunteers like Arad Hanaravi love how engaged kids are in the reading experience. 'This is all about encouraging kids of all ages to come and read books together and the authors are here signing books,' said Hanaravi. Not only is Rockin' the Library about keeping kids reading, but it also helps families bond, Huff noted. 'It's to engage and motivate the students,' Huff said. 'Not only the children, though. The parents also.' Meanwhile, just up Interstate 81 in Washington County, Md., Katelyn Morey, librarian at the Washington County Public Library, is touting a similar program for parents. 'It's to encourage bringing kids to the library to engage in summer reading, and just keep the reading bug alive throughout the summer months,' she said. Meanwhile, folks in Winchester are grateful for the commitment from the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation to the summer literacy program. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
