Chinese language proficiency competition for university students held in Egypt

CAIRO, May 17 (Xinhua) -- The 24th "Chinese Bridge" Chinese proficiency competition for Egyptian university students concluded Saturday in the Egyptian capital Cairo. The competition, hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Egypt and organized by the Cairo-based Chinese Bridge Club, consisted of three parts: a keynote speech, a knowledge quiz, and a talent show. Twelve finalists advanced from a pool of 30 contestants representing 24 Egyptian universities in the preliminary rounds. The participants demonstrated strong proficiency in the Chinese language and extensive understanding of China's national conditions. Two students from Cairo University, Ola Sherief and Youssef Ehab, won the grand prize and the first prize respectively. The grand prizer Sherief, a student majoring in Chinese translation, said that she likes to learn Chinese and understand Chinese culture through a variety of Chinese film and television works and social media platforms in her spare time. "I hope to use Chinese as a bridge to contribute to the mutual understanding and cultural exchanges between Chinese and Egyptian youth," Sherief told Xinhua. "We welcome more Egyptian youth to visit China and contribute to promoting cultural exchanges and people-to-people exchanges between China and Egypt, promoting mutual learning and mutual benefit among the world's diverse civilizations, and building a community with a shared future for mankind," Liu Jianqing, deputy director-general of China's Center for Language Education and Cooperation, said at the award ceremony. Egypt has opened 32 Chinese majors across 30 universities, and 21 public middle schools have introduced Chinese as an elective subject for a second foreign language.

I wanted to do a film that suits the normal person in me: Bala

Kalakka Povathu Yaaru ( KPY ) and Cooku With Comali fame Bala will be playing the lead for the first time in a yet-to-be-titled feel-good film helmed by filmmaker Sherief . Speaking about how he chose the film, Bala says, 'When you do something for the first time, there is a responsibility and fear to do it right. I did get offers to play lead roles earlier, but I was doubtful whether I was the right fit for them.' He adds, 'I wanted to do a film which will suit me because I know that I'm a normal person and not a big star. I'm an upcoming artiste and I don't know whether I can do five fights in a film. When we take the first step, we should make the right decision; I believe I have done that.' Talking about Namita Krishnamurthy, who will be paired opposite him in the film, Bala says, 'She is superb and is such a sweet soul.' Going forward, Bala wants to be part of stories that everyone relates to. 'I would continue to work hard and do films that people like. My desire is to do good films and good deeds because I don't view my success as mine alone but also as that of everyone around me.' Bala also highlights how much of a support Raghava Lawrence has been for him. 'He is like my brother and is very special to me. He was the first person I told that I want to act as a hero. And he was also the one who said that it will definitely happen.' 'I don't post what I do on YouTube and earn money from it' Bala, who is known for his philanthropic work, addresses the criticism he gets and states, 'I don't post what I do on YouTube and earn money from it. If that was the case, I would have found the criticism valid. But I post what I do on Instagram so that people get inspired. If I post a video holding a cigarette, then it's my fault for influencing people the wrong way. But, when I post something good and if it inspires people, there's nothing more that I want.'
