New Trader Joe's opens across the street from existing location, puzzling the internet

Trader Joe's recently opened a store in California that has social media in a tizzy. According to Trader Joe's website, it opened a store in Sherman Oaks, California, on June 6. Social media users were quick to point out a particular quirk about the store; it is directly across the street from an existing Trader Joe's location. "We've had a great relationship with our customers in Sherman Oaks for 52 years, and we plan to keep both stores open," Trader Joe's spokesperson Nakia Rohde said in an emailed statement to USA TODAY on June 17. Rohde elaborated that the company's goal is always to bring "delicious products at great values to as many people as we can," and that the best way to do that is to open more stores. Rohde pointed out the new store "is bigger and has an attached underground parking lot." Trader Joe's website shows both stores sell many of the same items, including alcohol, fresh produce, bakery items and meat, among other items. The new store is located at 14140 Riverside Drive in Sherman Oaks, while the older store is located at 14119 Riverside Drive. Social media puzzled by location of new Trader Joe's store In a recent TikTok video filmed in front of the new Trader Joe's location, content creator Evan Lovett points out just how close the two stores are to each other. Lovett notes that Trader Joe's is a beloved California institution before slowly panning the camera around to reveal the "original Trader Joe's in Sherman Oaks is directly across the street, less than 100 yards away." Lovett films himself walking through the new Trader Joe's location, calling it "beautiful" and "modern" before pointing out the location's surprising "ample parking." In a TikTok posted on June 7, user @ShavsPaper also jokes about the proximity of the two Trader Joe's stores. The post has gotten over 68,000 views and over 3,000 likes. Trader Joe's leaves LA customers seeing double after opening another store directly across the street

A Trader Joe's in a wealthy southern California neighborhood was so popular that the grocery chain with a rabid fan base decided to open a new outpost — right across the street. The popular grocery store opened its second Sherman Oaks location, directly across the street from another outpost on Riverside Avenue, on June 6, according to the chain's website. The California-based supermarket's newest location, nicknamed 'Sherman Oaks too,' sits in a busy mixed-use building just minutes from the hectic US Highway 101 in the San Fernando Valley, about 15 miles northwest of Los Angeles. The original location, opened in 1973, occupies a quieter, stand-alone building, SFGate reported. Despite obvious upgrades given the fresh space, Trader Joe's first Sherman Oaks location can be reached within a minute of the new location - and the company plans to keep the old one open. 'We've had a great relationship with our customers in Sherman Oaks for 52 years, and we plan to keep both stores open,' Trader Joe's spokesperson Naika Rohde said. 'Both stores offer the same great products and delightful customer experience, but each has a different layout and parking lot.' While both locations offer the same beloved specialty snacks and products, SFGate noted the newer location features a vibrant exterior mural, underground parking and a less-cramped shopping experience. The newer storefront has wider aisles to better accommodate shopping carts, as well as higher ceilings than the original, according to the report. Trader Joe's latest addition, while confusing to customers, seems to be part of an upward trend for the company, as they plan to open at least a dozen new stores across the country this year alone. 'Since Trader Joe's began in 1967, we have been in growth mode. Some years, we grow more than others, and our goal is always to bring delicious products at great values to as many people as we can,' Rohde said. ' The best way to do that is to open more stores.' 'We Were Not Planning On This Kind Of Expenditure At This Point In Our Lives,' How These Parents Are Dealing With Their 'Boomerang Kid'

Two parents from Sherman Oaks, California, moved their 24-year-old daughter back into the family home in early 2024. In their mid-60s, the parents, who asked to remain anonymous when speaking to CNBC, expected that they'd be closing in on retirement at this point in their lives. Instead, they're canceling vacations and delaying retirement in order to accommodate their daughter's $5,000 a month living expenses. "We were not planning on this kind of expenditure at this point of our lives," the mother told CNBC. "The reason we do it is because we don't want to see her on the street." The family isn't alone in having their plans upended by the unexpected return of an adult child. The phenomenon, which experts have termed "boomerang kids," has been steadily growing over the last few years. Don't Miss: In terms of getting money back, . Warren Buffett once said, "If you don't find a way to make money while you sleep, you will work until you die." A Thrivent study on boomerang kids released in 2025 found that 46% of parents report that their adult children, ages 18-35, have moved back home at some point. The reasons for these moves vary from economic factors like debt, stagnant wages, and rising housing costs to personal factors like divorce or illness. While many parents say they are happy to provide a safety net for their children, there's also recognition that it often has a significant and negative impact on their own finances. According to the survey, 38% of boomerang parents say that having their children move back in has impacted their ability to save for long-term goals like retirement. The Sherman Oaks parents say they are feeling that pinch, to the point that it has caused tension in their relationship with their daughter. So they've turned to parenting coach Kim Muench for help navigating their new situation. Trending: Named a TIME Best Invention and Backed by 5,000+ Users, Kara's Air-to-Water Pod Cuts Plastic and Costs — The move is a great first step in healing the rifts that boomerang situations can create, Muench told CNBC. "Parents sometimes hesitate to get help for themselves and invest in their health ... because they're already spending more than they would like to support their adult or emerging adult children," she says. Ultimately, though, Muench says open and honest conversations about money and timelines are the only way to ensure the familial bonds won't be permanently affected by a return home. She suggests starting with small financial boundaries, like asking your child to contribute towards a bill or put a set amount of money away in a savings account to mimic paying rent. "When their son or daughter is not taking [financial responsibility] on incrementally, [parents] actually get very worried that they will be financially providing for the rest of their lives," Muench told CNBC. "It takes consistent conversations, because it's probably not going to happen in the first conversation," she continued. "And it takes an emotional maturity level on both the parents and the emerging adult side to figure out how they can work together." According to Los Angeles police, the incident happened just before 8:40 a.m. in the 13000 block of Cumpston Street. The video shows as the red tow truck drives down the street while hauling a gray pickup truck. Police say no arrests have yet been made. Investigators took both a stolen vehicle report and a traffic collision report as their investigation continues.
