Mumbai mainstay Siddhesh Lad named Maratha Royals captain in T20 League Debut
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 26 (ANI): Mumbai circuit's proven performer Siddhesh Lad will lead the Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals as captain for their debut campaign in T20 Mumbai League Season 3. A proud product of Shivaji Park, Lad's deep familiarity with Mumbai cricket and proven ability across formats make him the natural choice to lead a team built on strong fundamentals and local identity. A technically sound, level-headed batsman with over a decade of experience, Lad, 32, has played 74 First Class, 50 List A, and 60 T20 matches, amassing more than 4100 runs in the Ranji Trophy, where he stands eighth on Mumbai's all-time run-scorers list. An occasional off-spinner, he also spent time playing in the UK before returning to hit a career-best 169* against Odisha in the 2024-25 Ranji season. Known as Mumbai's 'crisis man' for his ability to steady innings under pressure, Lad brings that same grit and game awareness to the Maratha Royals. Beyond the captaincy, the squad sees two changes, with Rohan Raje and Saksham Parashar replacing icon player Tushar Deshpande, who will miss the season owing to national commitments with the India A squad touring England, and Arman Jaffer. Speaking on his appointment, Siddhesh Lad said, as quoted from a press release from Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals, 'It's an honour to lead Maratha Royals, especially in our first season. I've always taken pride in representing Mumbai, and this opportunity to lead a franchise rooted in Shivaji Park, where I began my journey, means a lot. We've got a strong mix of talent, and the aim is clear: to play smart, play tough, and represent Mumbai with intent and pride.' Hailing from a cricketing background, with his father Dinesh Lad a respected coach and mentor to many Mumbai cricketers, Siddhesh grew up steeped in the game, training at Shivaji Park from an early age. In just his second First Class appearance in 2013, Lad hit twin fifties against Delhi, before playing a crucial knock of 88 in the 2015-16 final, leading Mumbai to their 41st Ranji title. Commenting on Lad's ability as a batter and a spearhead, Abhishek Nayar, Team Mentor, said: 'Siddhesh is a natural leader. He's someone who reads the game well, absorbs pressure, and leads by example. He's played in every format, adapted to every role, and always delivered. That's what we're building here, players who reflect the ethos of Mumbai cricket: skill, grit, and quiet confidence.' With Lad at the helm, the Royals are in the final phase of preparations for their league campaign. The team will play three warm-up matches against sister franchise Raigad Royals (from the Maharashtra Premier League) between May 27 and May 29, before beginning their T20 Mumbai League journey on June 4, when they take on Aakash Tigers at the Wankhede Stadium. Mumbai Metro Line 3 Phase 2A to open for public from Saturday; full line expected to be operational by August
Mumbai's first fully underground Metro corridor, the Aqua Line (Line 3), is set to welcome commuters on its second operational stretch, Phase 2A, which connects the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) to Worli at Acharya Atre Chowk through a 9.77 km route, from Saturday. The final stretch, from Worli to Cuffe Parade, is under construction and expected to open by August, completing the entire 33.5 km corridor. Phase 2A was formally opened by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday, who took a ride between BKC and Siddhivinayak stations as part of the inauguration. After the ride, Fadnavis said, 'This underground metro corridor from Cuffe Parade to Aarey Seepz is India's longest single-line underground metro corridor. The second phase opening reflects our dedication towards constructing world-class urban infrastructure. We anticipate the whole stretch to be operational by August in the presence of PM Modi, and we aim to open another 100 km of metro span across MMR by 2027.' With Phase 2A opening, people can now commute from BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk in a little over 15 minutes with trains coming every 6 minutes and 20 seconds. The ticket price will be between Rs 10 and Rs 40 based on the distance covered. There will be 244 trips per day using eight trains. The six recently opened stations – Dharavi, Shitaladevi, Dadar West, Siddhivinayak, Worli, and Acharya Atre Chowk – cater to important areas, such as religious places like Siddhivinayak Temple and cultural complexes like Shivaji Park and Ravindra Natya Mandir. BKC and Worli, the two important business centres, are likely to see heavy ridership owing to better connectivity, according to Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC). 'This line is an engineering marvel. From tunnelling under Mithi river, to building in dense areas like Dadar and Dharavi, the project overcame enormous challenges, from high groundwater levels to navigating heritage structures and crowded slums,' Fadnavis added. The initial section of Metro Line 3 from Aarey to BKC was inaugurated in October 2024 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The last section from Worli to Cuffe Parade through Mumbai Central and CSMT is currently under construction and scheduled to open by August. When operational, the entire 33.5 km route will have 27 underground stations and cut peak hour traffic on the Western Railway by as much as 15 per cent. The whole corridor is likely to provide several advantages, such as reducing travel time from Cuffe Parade to Aarey to less than one hour, decongesting Lady Jamshedji Road and Annie Besant Road, and linking new places like Kalbadevi and Girgaon, which are not connected through the suburban railway. The fare will be capped at Rs 60 for the entire route. 'With the total running of this metro line, almost 5 lakh vehicles will go off roads and there will be huge savings in fuel, energy, and most importantly, time of commuters. With public transport in Mumbai going green on a large scale, we appeal to people to adopt and utilise these eco-friendly modes,' Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said during the inaugural ride, accompanying Fadnavis. The Metro Line 3 is constructed with advanced technology such as full-height platform screen doors, driverless train systems, and the Twin Booted Low Vibration Track System in order to decrease ground-level vibrations. The line will also be joined by other Metro corridors and the Mumbai Monorail, and the Bullet Train at BKC. CM Fadnavis also highlighted how the project had been delayed due to environmental and legal hurdles in the past. 'Work was stalled until 2022, but it resumed once the Shinde government came to power. Now we plan to operationalise a 50 km network by next year and another 50 km by 2027,' he said. However, some stations like Dadar will not be directly connected to existing railway hubs and may require a short walk, a concern for commuters that the MMRC officials said will be addressed with improved last-mile connectivity options.
