Mumbai mainstay Siddhesh Lad named Maratha Royals captain in T20 League Debut

India Gazette26-05-2025
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 26 (ANI): Mumbai circuit's proven performer Siddhesh Lad will lead the Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals as captain for their debut campaign in T20 Mumbai League Season 3.
A proud product of Shivaji Park, Lad's deep familiarity with Mumbai cricket and proven ability across formats make him the natural choice to lead a team built on strong fundamentals and local identity.
A technically sound, level-headed batsman with over a decade of experience, Lad, 32, has played 74 First Class, 50 List A, and 60 T20 matches, amassing more than 4100 runs in the Ranji Trophy, where he stands eighth on Mumbai's all-time run-scorers list.
An occasional off-spinner, he also spent time playing in the UK before returning to hit a career-best 169* against Odisha in the 2024-25 Ranji season. Known as Mumbai's 'crisis man' for his ability to steady innings under pressure, Lad brings that same grit and game awareness to the Maratha Royals.
Beyond the captaincy, the squad sees two changes, with Rohan Raje and Saksham Parashar replacing icon player Tushar Deshpande, who will miss the season owing to national commitments with the India A squad touring England, and Arman Jaffer.
Speaking on his appointment, Siddhesh Lad said, as quoted from a press release from Mumbai South Central Maratha Royals, 'It's an honour to lead Maratha Royals, especially in our first season. I've always taken pride in representing Mumbai, and this opportunity to lead a franchise rooted in Shivaji Park, where I began my journey, means a lot. We've got a strong mix of talent, and the aim is clear: to play smart, play tough, and represent Mumbai with intent and pride.'
Hailing from a cricketing background, with his father Dinesh Lad a respected coach and mentor to many Mumbai cricketers, Siddhesh grew up steeped in the game, training at Shivaji Park from an early age. In just his second First Class appearance in 2013, Lad hit twin fifties against Delhi, before playing a crucial knock of 88 in the 2015-16 final, leading Mumbai to their 41st Ranji title.
Commenting on Lad's ability as a batter and a spearhead, Abhishek Nayar, Team Mentor, said: 'Siddhesh is a natural leader. He's someone who reads the game well, absorbs pressure, and leads by example. He's played in every format, adapted to every role, and always delivered. That's what we're building here, players who reflect the ethos of Mumbai cricket: skill, grit, and quiet confidence.'
With Lad at the helm, the Royals are in the final phase of preparations for their league campaign. The team will play three warm-up matches against sister franchise Raigad Royals (from the Maharashtra Premier League) between May 27 and May 29, before beginning their T20 Mumbai League journey on June 4, when they take on Aakash Tigers at the Wankhede Stadium. Buchi Babu cricket: Tamil Nadu look to find a spin partner for Sai Kishore

M Siddharth CHENNAI: The Buchi Babu invitational tournament, which traditionally acts as a preparatory event for the Ranji Trophy, could not have come at a better time for Tamil Nadu . Different factors – including workload management and injuries to key players – have put TN outside their comfort zone ahead of the red-ball competition that will begin here on Monday. The tourney will serve as a testing ground for TN, who will seek answers to some probing questions via their two teams – TNCA President's XI and TNCA XI. Among those is the quest to find an able ally for lead spinner R Sai Kishore in the first phase of the Ranji Trophy. Sai Kishore's partner-in-crime S Ajith Ram, a left-arm slow bowler who has been a mainstay in the TN XI for the last few years, is set to be out of action until at least December, after suffering an ACL injury during the Tamil Nadu Premier League. While left-arm tweaker M Siddharth (TNCA XI) is likely to be the front-runner to replace Ajith Ram, he will have to demonstrate during Buchi Babu that he is cut above the rest. DT Chandrasekar (TNCA XI), P Vidyuth (TNCA President's XI) and P Vignesh (TNCA President's XI) are the other left-arm spinners in the fray, with Lakshay Jain (TNCA XI) and J Hemchudeshan (TNCA President's XI) being the off-spinning options. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Next-Level Tablet Experience Awaits with Blackview MEGA 8 BlackView Shop Now Undo Given that Sai Kishore has been ruled out with a minor finger injury, the TNCA President's XI slow bowlers may receive the opportunity to take up the lead role. TN head coach M Senthilnathan said that it is up to the players to make a strong case for themselves. 'We have enough spin-bowling talent to encounter this situation. The Buchi Babu tournament gives them a platform to showcase their skills. Some of these players are not well established at TN's senior level, so the tournament will allow us to pick the right players for the Ranji Trophy,' Senthilnathan told TOI on Sunday. Chandrasekar was the topper of the TNCA first division league's wickets chart in the opening phase, while Vidyuth and Hemchudeshan were also placed in the top-15. 'We have many left-arm spinners in TN and they have shown that they are capable of picking up wickets,' added Senthilnathan. Meanwhile, U-19 stars RS Ambrish (TNCA President's XI), K Abhinav (TNCA President's XI) and D Deepesh (TNCA XI) will get a taste of senior-level cricket. Buchi Babu tournament: Spinners, young pacers in focus

CHENNAI: Left-arm spinners DT Chandrasekar and M Siddharth will be the cynosure of all eyes as the All-India Buchi Babu tournament begins in Chennai on Monday. From Tamil Nadu's perspective, this is virtually the selection trials for the Ranji Trophy team. With S Ajith Ram ruled out for this season due to an injury he suffered during the TNPL, the choice for the second spinner after R Sai Kishore could be between DT Chandrasekar and M Siddharth. But If the selectors favour youth instead of an experienced hand, then the Trichy-based off spinner M Hemchudesan will come into the picture. Hemchudesan has been terrific at the U-19 level, picking up 47 wickets to help Tamil Nadu win the Cooch Behar trophy after 33 years. He has also been among wickets in the TNCA Senior Division the Buchi Babu tournament, M Siddharth and Chandrasekar will be playing for TNCA XI while Hemchudesan will be turning out for the TNCA President's XI. 'Pleased to be back in the Buchi Babu squad after a long time. If given an opportunity I will give my best shot,' said DT Chandrasekar. Chandrasekar has been in the best form of his life in the TNCA Senior Division league. He recently bowled himself into the record books, taking a 10-wicket haul for Sea Hawks against Globe Trotters in the TNCA first division league. Chandrasekar's 10/37 came in a single unbroken spell of 15 overs which helped his team bundle out Globe Trotters for a paltry 91. Former India off-spinner M Venkataramana was the last player to take all 10 wickets in the TNCA First Division league in 1992. 'I am bowling well at the moment. During that ten-wicket haul, I was in the zone and bowled with good flow. I have been bowling well for my side (Sea Hawks) this season. Last year also I bowled well in the TNCA league,'' said Chandrasekar.
