Quacks charge 25k per snakebite case

Hazaribag: Quacks of the district charge between Rs 5,000 and Rs 25,000 in lizard and snakebite cases. The family members of a woman of Katkamdag block, bitten by a russels' viper, took her to a quack, who wasted the one-hour golden period that is vital to save the lives of snakebite patients. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now They took her to the Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College and Hospital, from where she was referred to the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims), Ranchi. The woman was kept on ventilator for five days and declared dead on June 28. Speaking to TOI, the woman's relatives said when her condition deteriorated in Rims, they again contacted the quack, who agreed to treat her over phone. The call was made to her attendant at Rims, who kept the phone on speaker mode near the ear of the patient. At the other side, the quack kept whispering some words on phone for five minutes. This continued for three days till her condition worsened and doctors put her on ventilator. The quack charged Rs 25,000 for his work. In 2018, eight-year-old Shivam Kumar of Katkamdag died of rabies after his family members took him to a quack instead of a health centre for a dog bite. Former deputy superintendent of the Hazaribag sadar hospital, Dr Vijay Shankar, said, "The first hour after the bite is vital to save a patient's life. A bite by a russels' viper triggers multifocal toxicity through dynamic changes in the levels of coagulation factors. People should realise this fact and take the patient to the nearest government hospital." A quack, unwilling to be identified, said that they have the power to cure snakebites. However, he refused to give details, claiming that they don't waste their valuable time in discussing their treatment with urban residents.

Sheikhpura man held for brutal dowry assault after love marriage

P atna: In a shocking case of domestic violence and dowry harassment, a man from Sheikhpura was arrested on Sunday for allegedly torturing his wife following their love marriage. The accused, Shivam Kumar (24), allegedly assaulted his wife, cut her hair and shaved her eyebrows with a blade while demanding a dowry. The 20-year-old victim had married Shivam at a temple in Jamui on April 10 this year. The couple enjoyed a harmonious relationship for the first month, but tensions soon escalated when Shivam and his family allegedly began pressuring her for a dowry of Rs 5 lakh. Estranged from her own family after eloping, the woman was unable to meet the demands, leading to repeated abuse. The situation reached a breaking point on June 20 when Shivam allegedly attempted to kill her. The woman managed to escape and lodged a complaint at the women's police station the same day. Following her report, police launched a manhunt and arrested Shivam in Lakhisarai on Sunday. A police officer said, "The victim's ordeal began when she met Shivam through social media one year ago. Women's police station in-charge Anamika Kumari said, "The victim met Shivam through social media a year ago. They started talking and, six months later, began meeting each other. Both informed their families about the relationship. The girl's family opposed it and refused to accept the relationship." Distressed by her family's disapproval, the young woman eloped and married Shivam at a temple in the Sikandra police station area in Jamui. She then moved in with Shivam's family in Sheikhpura, who initially accepted her. "All was well for about a month," Kumari said. "However, at the beginning of June, her husband and in-laws began demanding ₹5 lakh as dowry. The woman told them that she had severed ties with her family, who had stopped speaking to her after she ran away. She asked how she could possibly provide the money. In response, her in-laws began verbally abusing her," she added. Disputes over the dowry increased between the couple. On June 20, in a fit of rage, Shivam allegedly beat her severely. "Not satisfied, her husband then cut her hair with scissors and shaved her eyebrows with a blade. Terrified by this behaviour, she managed to escape from her in-laws' house and reached the women's police station, where she filed a complaint. She then returned to her parental home in Nawada," the station in-charge added. Shivam is set to be presented before the court on July 28.

Dalit labourer murdered in UP's Amethi; police suspect past rivalry as motive

Tension prevailed in a village in Uttar Pradesh's Amethi on Tuesday after a 32-year-old Dalit labourer died after being found with multiple injuries caused by a sharp weapon. The police identified the victim as Shivam Kumar and said that he was found near a poultry farm on the outskirts of Kalyanpur village in the Jamon area of Amethi on Monday evening. A murder case has been lodged against locals Vikas Yadav, Man Singh, and two unidentified persons, the police added. While the preliminary investigation suggests that the murder stemmed from an old dispute related to a relationship, a heavy police presence was deployed in Kalyanpur on Tuesday to prevent any untoward incidents, officials said. 'There was an old dispute between Kumar and the accused,' Vinod Kumar Singh, Station House Officer of Jamon police station, said, adding that the suspects are being questioned. According to the police, on Monday evening, they received information about an injured man lying near a poultry farm on the outskirts of the village. A police team rushed to the spot and took Kumar to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead. A preliminary inquiry revealed that Kumar had left home on Monday afternoon to visit the poultry farm. When he did not return, his family began searching for him. Locals later discovered him lying in a pool of blood in the field. Kumar worked as a daily wage labourer and got married last year. His father, Chottelal, lodged a complaint at the local police station, alleging that the attackers used a sharp-edged weapon in the assault. The police recovered a liquor bottle from the spot where the body was found.
