Shivamogga teachers and lecturers not to collect data on menstruation cycle from students

The Shivamogga administration has sent a circular to schools and colleges in the district instructing them not to collect data on the menstrual cycle from girl students and maintain a register of the information. The circular was issued days after The Hindu carried a report on the previous circular from the district administration asking schools and colleges to maintain a separate register on the menstrual cycles of students as part of the Mission Suraksha campaign launched with the objective of ensuring the safety of children. Speaking to The Hindu, teachers, students, parents, and women's activists had flagged the issue of violation of privacy. Deputy Commissioner Gurudatta Hegade has sent a clarification about the previous official memo, mentioning the news report published in The Hindu. In the circular, dated July 14, he states that the main objectives of the campaign (Mission Suraksha) include ensuring the safety of children by bringing down the cases of child marriage, sexual assault on children, and cases of anaemia among children, and providing counselling on health, hygiene, and handling the menstrual cycle. Managing personal information of students or infringing upon the privacy of students was not the objective of the campaign, he clarified. Along with the circular, senior officers of the departments have also sent a message to the teachers instructing them that there is no need to collect data or maintain a register with regard to the menstrual cycles of students. Following the news report, many people on social media platforms had expressed shock over the initiative and demanded that it be stopped. Rati Rao E., national president of the All-India Progressive Women's Association, issued a press release demanding that the collection of data on menstrual cycles be stopped immediately. She stressed the need for launching a scientific awareness campaign on 'my body, my right' and also on prevention of sexual harassment, at home and public spaces.

Expelled leader Eshwarappa hints at return to BJP

Ballari: Expelled BJP leader K S Eshwarappa on Sunday indicated a possible return to the party, saying 'the BJP was his life' and there was no question of him joining any other political outfit. He said he was considering meeting senior BJP leaders and that some within the party were also open to his return. The BJP had expelled Eshwarappa, a former state president and Deputy Chief Minister, for six years last year for violating party discipline and contesting the Lok Sabha polls as an independent from Shivamogga, rebelling against the party's official candidate. Eshwarappa had entered the fray, accusing state BJP chief B Y Vijayendra and his father, veteran leader B S Yediyurappa, of denying his son K E Kantesh a ticket from Haveri. Vijayendra's brother and sitting MP B Y Raghavendra was the BJP candidate from Shivamogga. 'I don't know the details. I only heard through TV reports that BJP workers from the Kuruba community (to which I belong) held a meeting and demanded my return. Some of them spoke kindly about me, but beyond that, I'm not aware of anything,' Eshwarappa said. Speaking to reporters, he said, 'Where will I go if I leave the BJP? My life is at this party. Let's see, I'm thinking of speaking to some senior leaders. I've also heard that some of them are considering my return. After discussions, things may take shape. But I will not leave the BJP for any other party.' Asked whether he had received invitations from other parties, Eshwarappa said some ministers in the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government had approached him, offering suitable positions for him and his son. He also claimed that Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav had invited him. 'Hindutva is like my breath. I joined the BJP because of Hindutva. Even if I die, I won't leave the BJP or Hindutva. So, there is no question of joining any other party,' he added.

Govt. high school in Hassan secures 100% results in SSLC examination for eighth consecutive year

Shivamogga The government high school at Attavara in Hassan taluk has set a record by continuously registering 100% results in the SSLC examination for the last eight years. Since the academic year 2017-18, no student of the school has failed in the examination. All 25 students who appeared for the exam earlier this year had passed. While seven of them secured distinction, 14 scored a first-class score. The quality weightage percentage stands at 86.95, which is measured based on the number of students who secured distinction and first-class score. Since 2017, as many as 210 students have appeared for the SSLC examination, and all of them have passed. The school has been maintaining a good pass percentage because of the activities the teaching faculty began eight years ago. K.P. Narayan, who is now the Block Education Officer of Arakalgud taluk, was the headmaster then. The teachers began to conduct unit tests every month, make house visits, interact with parents regularly, hold parents meetings on the school campus, conduct group studies, take extra classes early in the day and also in the evening, and give away prizes to those who score the highest in the unit tests. Such efforts yielded results. G.M. Prakash, who teaches English in the school, said, since 2017, the school has followed certain measures to achieve 100% results. 'We have been continuing the same steps all these steps now that has helped us in retaining the same results. Headmaster H.P. Rajashekhar and other staff members have made sincere efforts for the current result', he said. The teachers felt the need to take the parents into confidence and involve them in the efforts. 'We regularly meet the parents, and that helps us ensure the students give attention to studies when they are at home. We identified the slow learners at the beginning of the year and gave them extra attention. With the support of parents, we conducted extra classes till late in the evenings,' Mr. Ashok said. Lakshmi of Channammaanahalli, who scored the highest mark in the school, 599 marks out of 625, said, 'The teachers played a prominent role. They conducted surprise tests to check if we had understood the concepts well, which helped us concentrate on topics that needed more attention,' she said. As the school has been maintaining an impressive pass percentage, many parents enroll their children in the school for Class 10. 'Normally, some private schools insist that slow learners leave the schools at Class 10. We admit such students and make them clear the examination,' Mr. Prakash added.
