Taiwan's popular noodle chain Xiao Hun Mian opens first Singapore outlet at Raffles City, Lifestyle News
Singapore is a hot market for popular overseas F&B chains, seeing an influx of new openings recently such as the award-winning Keming Bing Sat and viral fried chicken restaurant Sides. Now, a new contender joins the mix as Taiwan's Xiao Hun Mian, also known as Spicy Noodles, opens at Raffles City today (June 3). The term xiao hun, which literally translates to 'selling one's soul', can also mean 'being overwhelmed with joy'. The handmade noodle chain apparently sees snaking queues of up to two hours in Taiwan — where they currently have 18 outlets, according to a press release. Here, diners can expect to indulge in their signature Xiao Hun Noodles (Soul-Stirring Noodles) — made with handmade noodles, Master Chilli Sauce, Master Chilli Oil, and Xiao Hun Noodle Sauce flown in directly from Taiwan. Prices start from $18.80 for the Spicy Mixed Meat and Vegetables and Xiao Hun Noodles set. The menu also includes other variations of the signature dish, such as the Spicy Beef Soup with Beef Tendon and Sliced US Beef and Xiao Hun Noodles set ($24.80) and Spicy Beef Soup with Sliced US Beef, Spongy Tofu and Soy Chip and Xiao Hun Noodles set ($23.80). For those who prefer something lighter, there's also less-spicy options like the Mild Beef Soup with Sliced US Beef and Xiao Hun Noodles set ($20.80). Each bowl of noodles is paired with beef soup made from pure beef bone and simmered for at least six hours with a side of Braised Tofu Pouch and topped with a soft boiled egg. For sides, there's small bites like Fried Bread Sticks ($4.50), Spicy Golden Fish Balls ($4) and Blanched Vegetables ($4). The new Singapore outpost has a similar aesthetic to the chain's Taiwan restaurants — featuring a minimalistic design and muted and earth-tone colours. Address: 252 North Bridge Road, Raffles City Shopping Centre, #B1-38, Singapore 179103 Opening hours: 11am to 10pm (daily) [[nid:716027]]

Diverse crowd gathers at Tupelo's Veterans Park to remember the fallen
TUPELO – With rain and thunderstorms predicted, folks still showed up on Memorial Day morning to show gratitude for those who gave their lives for their country. Veterans Park in east Tupelo, with its American flag-lined entrance, drew quite a crowd as the sun and clouds struck a balance for the half-hour program. About 150 to 200 people gathered in a peaceful spot overlooking the lake — veterans representing all service branches, families of veterans, others who just wanted to pay homage and show gratitude. As they milled about before the program began, there were hellos and handshakes, hugs and high-fives. Some used canes and walkers, a few were in strollers pushed by parents. One group arrived together on motorcycles. A bugler and a bagpiper were present, as were a mayor and a United States representative. All were welcomed. Guntown neighbors Nancy Sides and Joyce House sat on one of the park's metal benches. It was House's third time to attend the city of Tupelo's Memorial Day program. Her sister's husband served in the Marines. Sides had a great-uncle who died in the Battle of Guadalcanal in World War II, an uncle who sustained a head injury in Vietnam and a nephew who completed two tours of duty in Afghanistan. "I'm here to remember the ones who gave us the freedom to be here today," Sides said. Marianne Sleep and Debbi Beasley came to Veterans Park to honor their fathers, both of whom served their country and came home to their families. Sleep has attended the Memorial Day program for years to honor Robert Teyema, her father. Beasley attended for the first time on Monday. Her father, the late Ed Bishop, longtime program director at WTVA, served in Desert Storm in the National Guard. Bill and Camille Caples experienced Memorial Day in the park for the first time this year. "We were just talking about all the people we knew who were in the service, some who died," Camille Caples said. "This is a time to remember." Dressed in a patriotic red, white and blue, the former Tupelo High School guidance counselor glimpsed Mayor Todd Jordan and smiled. "I wore this same outfit when Todd Jordan was a student in high school," she said. Jordan welcomed the crowd and offered a reminder of why all were there. "We are here to remember those who never came home," he said, before introducing Vietnam veteran Willie Sampson, who proffered a prayer and led the Pledge of Allegiance; Hope Nanney and Camren Wages, who sang the National Anthem; and U.S Rep. Trent Kelly, the speaker for the program. Kelly served in the Mississippi Army National Guard as a combat engineer for 39 years. He retired in April 2025 as a major general. Kelly called attention to the words on a plaque near the lectern: "May your loved ones spend eternity with their comrades." He cited scripture in Isaiah and John that speak of one laying down his life for his friends. From his heart, Kelly shared his own memories of lost soldiers he knew personally. "They were not always lost in combat," he said. "But in training accidents or in other ways preparing for combat. And the scars of war don't go away. Soldiers have been lost after they come home." Kelly recognized Gold Star families, those who have lost an immediate family member in the service of his/her country. Martha Fleming proudly stood. On May 5, 1968, Richard Wackerfuss was killed in Vietnam. He was Martha Fleming's husband and the father of three young children — Pamela, Barbara and Richard Wallace. Fleming later remarried Eldridge Fleming of Tupelo and moved here in 1972. She continues to attend the Memorial Day ceremony most years. The city began hosting its annual Memorial Day program in 2007, said Leigh Ann Mattox, recreation director for Tupelo Parks & Recreation Department. Mattox coordinates the ceremony with help from the Veterans Council. "It was 2007 when we started having two ceremonies a year," Mattox said. "One on Memorial Day and the other on Veterans Day."

Influencer chicken? UK YouTubers bring their fried chicken chain to Singapore
Do you know the Sidemen? If you're not on that side of YouTube, the Sidemen are a group of 7 large YouTubers consisting of KSI, Miniminter, Zerkaa, TBJZL, Behzinga, Vikkstar123, and W2S. Their channel has over 20 million followers, and their content spans various challenges and extreme 'hide and seek' games. They also have several businesses under their belt, including clothing, a subscription service, and a vodka line. Now, they're planning to bring their fried chicken chain, Sides, to Singapore. Sides originally started as a delivery-only food business when the Sidemen partnered with cloud kitchen operator, Reef. The first physical location was in Boxpark Wembley in 2022. In a video posted on the newly created Instagram account, KSI posted a video announcing the brand was opening its first international outlet at Bugis+. At the moment, Sides only has physical outlets in Manchester, Essex and Kent within the UK. This isn't KSI's first foray into food – in 2024, he co-founded Lunchly with YouTubers Mr Beast and Logan Paul. Sides specialises in Nashville-style fried chicken, which is a method of frying chicken that originated from Nashville, Tennessee. The chicken parts are typically marinated in a water-based seasoning, floured, deep-fried and finally covered in a sauce base spiced with cayenne pepper. There has been no further news from Sides about the Singapore branch, and what will be on the menu is also currently unknown. Based on the current menu for the UK, we can look forward to burgers, tenders and wraps with different spice levels, as well as a large selection of sauces. There are also sides like corn ribs, waffle fries, mac and cheese and sweet treats like milkshakes and ice cream. Maybe we'll see unique creations for the Singaporean outlet. Famous UK YouTubers Sidemen to bring their fried chicken chain Sides to Singapore
June 2025 is shaping up to be quite the month for Singapore's food scene. For starters, Tokyo's renowned Pizza Studio Tamaki will be landing on our shores. And next, viral internet sensation and UK YouTube royalty the Sidemen are flying their fried chicken brand Sides to our city, with their first-ever international outlet opening at Bugis+ this June – time to gather the squad for a full send. If you've been living under a rock (or just not on YouTube), The Sidemen are a seven-man supergroup of British creators – KSI, Miniminter, Zerkaa, TBJZL, Behzinga, Vikkstar123, and W2S – who started their YouTube channel in 2013 putting out FIFA and video game content. Today, they're known for their chaotic challenge videos posted each Sunday (called Sidemen Sundays) – think hide and seek in crazy locations and Tinder IRL – as well as banter-filled friendship. With over 22 million subscribers on YouTube and six million followers on Instagram, the group has created somewhat of an empire for themselves, with business ventures ranging from merch (Sidemen Clothing) to F&B (Sides and S XIX Vodka). Just yesterday, one of its members, boxer and musician KSI, took to Sides' Instagram page to announce the chain's opening in Singapore. In the video, he mentions that their new outlet in Bugis+ will be the brand's first international restaurant apart from its five existing locations across the UK – a pretty mad ting. An Instagram account for Sides Singapore has also been created, though apart from the announcement, nothing else has been posted so far. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sides (@eatsides) Launched in 2021, Sides started as a delivery-only concept specialising in Nashville-style fried chicken. The Singapore menu is still under wraps, but based on the UK outlets, we can safely expect signatures like fried chicken burgers, tenders, and wings, all customisable to your preferred spice level, from the Nashville Mild to Nashville Insane. The UK menu also includes sides like loaded waffle fries, corn ribs, chilli poppers, and mac & cheese bites – so fingers crossed those make their way to Singapore as well. On top of that, Sides offers a whopping 10 sauce choices, from the elusive Secret Sauce to the more questionable chocolate BBQ. Who knows? We might just be getting a Singapore-exclusive sauce on the menu too.
