BofA Reiterates Buy on Salesforce (CRM) Amid Informatica Talks
On May 23, Bank of America Securities analyst Bradley Sills reiterated his Buy rating on Salesforce Inc. (NYSE:CRM) stock and raised his price target from $350 to $360, following a Bloomberg report that the company may acquire software company Informatica Inc. (NYSE:INFA). Informatica provides AI-powered enterprise cloud data management services. Sills highlighted that Informatica has a strong roster of large clients and solid data integration and governance expertise. He thus believes that the deal would strengthen Salesforce's data management offerings. Copyright: drserg / 123RF Stock Photo Sills also pointed out that Informatica's transition towards cloud-based services would gradually improve the combined company's revenue growth rate. The deal is not expected to dilute the cash flow profile as Informatica reports a comparable unlevered free cash flow margin (around 35%). Given these factors, the analyst views the potential acquisition as a positive for Salesforce's long-term earnings growth and thus maintains his optimistic view. Salesforce previously attempted to acquire Informatica in April 2024, but the deal didn't go through. Interestingly, Informatica was valued at approximately $12 billion at that time. Despite an 18% rally on Friday, May 23, the stock is now valued at just over half of that 2024 level. Private equity firm Permira and Canada Pension Plan Investment Board are Informatica's largest shareholders, holding stakes of 32% and 25%, respectively. Bloomberg also reports that Cloud Software Group, earlier known as Citrix Systems Inc., is also in the fray. If the deal is agreed on, it could be announced as soon as this week. Salesforce Inc. (NYSE:CRM) is a global leader in customer relationship management (CRM) software. Its cloud-based platform provides solutions for sales, service, marketing, and commerce, enabling businesses to build stronger customer connections using the power of data and AI. While we acknowledge the potential of CRM as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and have limited downside risk. Experts confirm twister touched down south of Winnipeg Wednesday
A cloudy sky in the village of Tourond, south of Winnipeg, quickly turned violent Wednesday, marking Manitoba's first tornado of the year. 'Nothing's going to happen. We have a super strong basement we can hide in,' says a girl in a video posted to Facebook that showed the tornado. The landspout tornado hit the community, on Highway 59 just south of Niverville, just after 5 p.m. Wednesday, leaving a small trail of dirt in its path, but causing no damage. A landspout, which is formed from the ground up, rather than from a rotating updraft within a thunderstorm cloud, generally doesn't cause a lot of damage. Natalie Hasell, of Environment and Climate Change Canada, said the tornado wasn't out of the ordinary. She said conditions were 'ripe' for cold core funnel clouds, which can — but often don't — turn into tornadoes. 'The general conditions around what happened (Wednesday), cold core funnel is very typical under these conditions,' she said. 'Occasionally a cold-core funnel will reach the ground.' Dave Sills, director of the Northern Tornadoes Project at Western University in London, Ont., said it was an early-season touchdown — only the second twister to ever touch down in Manitoba in the month of April. The first one happened near Altona in 1980. The project tracks all tornadoes in Canada. He said the tornado didn't do any damage, and only kicked up dirt in a field, based on a video sent to the university. Reeves for De Salaberry and Hanover both said they hadn't received reports of damage. Sills said Manitoba averages about 8.5 tornadoes a year, but cautioned the early touchdown isn't a sign that it will be a busy season. The university team classified the tornado as EF0-Default on the Enhanced Fujita scale, the lowest possible rating, with help from videos posted to social media. The classification would mean wind speeds were likely low, but still greater than 90 kilometres per hour. 'Any tornado is dangerous, even an EF0 can put a two-by-four through a wall,' said Sills. He said the rotation of smaller tornadoes can't be picked up on radar, which makes them difficult to predict. Hasell said for most people, a funnel cloud that quickly disappears and one that touches down and becomes destructive look the same, and that people should stay safe. 'Unless you're very sure about the situation, I would prefer that people would stay away and take shelter,' said Hasell. The strongest tornado in the southeast area of Manitoba happened near St. Malo in 1977. Two people were killed. The tornado was classified as F4 on the former Fujita scale. F4 tornadoes have wind speeds of at least 333 km/h. Wednesdays A weekly look towards a post-pandemic future. The strongest twister in Manitoba history happened in Elie in 2007. It reached F5 on the Fujita scale and had winds of greater than 400 km/h. The path of destruction was more than 5.5 kilometres long and 300 metres wide. Despite it lifting up cars and houses, nobody was killed. The Elie tornado is the only F5 or EF5 tornado recorded in Canada. The Tourond tornado was only Canada's second twister of the year after another one, classified as EF0, touched down near Rolling Hills, Alta. on April 12. The Northern Tornadoes Project is investigating another potential tornado that happened north of Montreal on April 29. If confirmed, it would make the Tourond tornado the third of the year. fpcity@

Manitoba's 1st tornado of 2025 recorded southeast of Niverville
Social Sharing Tornado season started in Manitoba this week with the first one touching down just southeast of Niverville, says an Ontario lab that tracks all tornadoes in Canada. It was weak but it's still "a bona fide tornado," said David Sills, director of the Northern Tornadoes Project, based at Western University in London, Ont. Officially, the Northern Tornadoes Project classifies it as a landspout-type tornado, which means its rotation couldn't be detected on satellite radar. It occurred around 5 p.m., about eight kilometres southeast of Niverville (about 35 kilometres south of Winnipeg) over a bare farm field. Soil from the field gently rotated in the spout. The tornadoes project received numerous reports from Manitoba with video and photos from multiple angles, Sills said. "Apparently the visibility was very good, because people were seeing it from miles away — lots of eyes on that one," he said. "Thankfully it just was brief. It didn't go very far." The tornadoes project will study high-resolution satellite imagery to get an estimate of the distance the tornado travelled. "Someone that was on the ground and was close by gave us an estimated track, so we'll be using that to look for evidence," Sills said. "Once we have a track, we can include that with the data on our dashboard." The tornado was given a default rating on the enhanced Fujita scale of EF0. That means there was no significant damage and wind speeds, though weaker, were at least 90 kilometres per hour. "You can't really see that kind of rotation on radar, so that's why we call these landspout-type tornadoes," Sills said. "When we start getting into more severe storms … those are the kind where you can actually see the storm itself rotating, and that can get picked up on radar, and forecasters can use that to help forecast the onset of the tornado." Landspout tornadoes aren't easy to forecast because they are "more or less randomly occurring around thunderstorms," he said. "And the most you'll usually get is an EF2, but most of them are EF0 or EF1." Environment Canada warning preparedness meteorologist Natalie Hassell said the national weather agency agrees with the tornadoes project researchers that an EF0 tornado touched down. It might not have been spawned from the storms in the area, which were quite small, she said. It appears the funnel cloud, which turned into the landspout, just formed from a low pressure system and cold front. "Both of these things would certainly be enough to start the vertical motion," she said. "In this case, the rotating column was visible as cloud formed in it, so we could actually see a funnel cloud and then see that it touched the ground." The first tornado of the year in Canada occurred April 12 north of Rolling Hills, Alta. It is also listed as an EF0. The tornadoes project is also investigating a potential one in Quebec from storms on the 29th. "So this one [in Manitoba] would actually be the third tornado documented in Canada this season," Sill said. "This is the time of year where the ingredients start to come together for tornadoes. Thankfully they've all been weak so far, nothing really substantial." But southern Manitoba is about to head straight into a sudden onset of summer-like weather, with temperatures of 25 C to 28 C forecast starting on Saturday. "It's those warm air masses that can lead to thunderstorms and potentially tornadoes if if the conditions are right," Sills said. "So this is the time of year when everybody needs to be more vigilant about watches and warnings and keeping an eye out when those are issued to make sure you stay out of trouble." The average number of tornadoes document in Manitoba per year, based on a 30-year average, is 8½. Saskatchewan, by comparison, sees 14½, and Ontario gets 18½. Canada's largest recorded tornado in history, however, occurred in Manitoba during the evening of June 22, 2007. The Elie tornado carried wind speeds estimated at between 420 km/h and 510 km/h and lasted about 40 minutes. It travelled about six kilometres, mostly through fields, but caused significant damage in the community of Elie, about 45 kilometres west of Winnipeg. It remains the only EF5 tornado ever recorded in Canada.

Bank of America says these tech stocks are heating up ahead of earnings
Bank of America named a slew of buy-rated tech stocks ahead of earnings. The firm says investors should buy the weakness on a host of companies like Block , Spotify, PayPal and Microsoft. Block Shares of Block have plenty room to run, according to the firm. The fintech payment company's first quarter earnings report is scheduled for May 1 with analyst Jason Kupferberg telling clients in a recent note to buy the dip. "We believe the stock is not being given enough credit for the general resilience the business has shown to date as well as its opex [operating expense] discipline," he wrote. Kupferberg says if management cuts its top-line guidance that would be "welcomed" as it would reset the bar for already high expectations. The firm also lowered its price target to $80 per share from $94. "We reiterate our Buy rating based on business model quality, tools to protect AOI [adjusted operating income] guidance, and valuation," he wrote. The stock is down 31% this year. Microsoft The firm is doubling down on shares of the tech giant. "Still best positioned for AI cycle," analyst Brad Sills wrote recently. Microsoft is scheduled to unveil its third quarter earnings on April 30 and Sills says investors should stick with the stock. "The focus this quarter is likely to be on Azure guidance and capex," the firm wrote. Azure is Microsoft's cloud computing platform. Sills added that he believes rumors of a Microsoft pull back on capex are overdone noting that the company remains committed to "building capacity for the long term." Meanwhile, shares are down 7% this year and Sills lowered his price target to $480 per share from $510. "Reiterate Buy on our top pick," he said succinctly. Roblox The gaming tech company is firing on all cylinders, according to analyst Omar Dessouky. Roblox is quickly making inroads in innovation and is well positioned for further share gains, the firm said in a note recently. "RBLX's ability to execute became clear in 2024 with numerous efficiency improvements and growth surprises," he wrote. Dessouky says the setup for Roblox's first quarter results on May 1 looks "favorable" with "execution likely excellent, again." Further, the firm says Roblox is "still not [a] widely held" stock among investors. However, "that could change as investors search for secular growth resilient to tariffs or a consumer spending slowdown in 2H25," so clients should buy Roblox now, he went on to say. Shares are up 14% this month. Block "We think a cut of 2025 top-line guidance to more achievable levels would be welcomed. We reiterate our Buy rating based on business model quality, tools to protect AOI guidance, and valuation. ... .We believe the stock is not being given enough credit for the general resilience the business has shown to date as well as its opex discipline..." Microsoft "Still best positioned for AI cycle. ... .The focus this quarter is likely to be on Azure guidance and capex. ... .There have been rumors that Microsoft is pulling back on capex. While Microsoft is likely shifting capex within geographies, the company remains building capacity for the long term. ... .Reiterate Buy on our top pick." Spotify "We are confident that SPOT's 1Q25 results will be at least in line with guidance on key metrics including revenue, premium subscribers and MAUs [monthly active users]. ... .Notably, it is our view that SPOT's subscription model should be more defensive/utilitylike amid the current macro uncertainty. However, recent volatility could have an impact on future advertising growth, especially since our forecasts contemplate a 2H acceleration." PayPal "PYPL reports on 4/29. Measurable progress against strategic initiatives to accelerate branded TPV [total payment volume] is key to turning around weak sentiment, and 1Q is unlikely to be the quarter when this happens, especially amid macro turmoil. ... .PYPL has a strong brand, balance sheet, and scale, and given progress on the turnaround, we rate it Buy."
