I Loved Stevie Nicks‘s 'Silver Springs' for Years—Then a Breakup Made Me Actually Understand It

After teasing some sort of reconciliation through cryptic Instagram posts, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham formally announced on Wednesday that they'll be reissuing Buckingham Nicks—the long-forgotten album they released as a duo in 1973 before joining Fleetwood Mac—this September. Considering that the former on-again, off-again couple has been quite publicly feuding since Buckingham was asked to leave the band in 2018 (allegedly at Nicks's request), the news is surprising, to say the least. Over the decades, Buckingham and Nicks's tumultuous relationship yielded some of the greatest breakup songs ever written: tracks like 'Go Your Own Way,' 'Never Going Back Again,' 'Dreams,' and Nicks's spellbinding ballad 'Silver Springs,' which has gone somewhat viral in recent years. I was a shy 16-year-old when I first heard 'Silver Springs,' and it immediately became an obsession. Never mind that I'd never been in a relationship (I'd barely even been kissed); the pleading lyrics and the unfiltered anguish with which Nicks sang about splitting from her longtime boyfriend and musical partner in 1976 changed my world. Soon, I had no fewer than five different recordings of it on repeat: demos, live versions, and the final cut. My favorite was 'Silver Springs (Sessions, Roughs & Outtakes),' featured on one of the countless re-releases of Fleetwood Mac's 1977 album Rumours. It's angrier than the final version and less polished—Nicks at her best, in my opinion. The song came about when, while driving on the freeway, Nicks saw a sign for Silver Springs, Maryland, and loved the name. 'It sounded like a pretty fabulous place to me,' she later told Rolling Stone. 'It's a whole symbolic thing of what [Lindsey] could have been to me.' But due to its length and tempo, 'Silver Springs' was criminally left off Rumours' original tracklist. It was eventually revived with The Dance, the band's hit live album in 1997, and all that old tension culminated in a version even more powerful than the studio cut. From then on, during performances, Nicks would turn her mic stand to face her ex directly, and sing the words she had written about him years prior while Buckingham strummed and harmonized back at her.

Why Are Stevie Nicks And Lindsey Buckingham Like This? Turns Out Astrology Has The Answer.

What comes to mind when I mention the rock band Fleetwood Mac? For many casual listeners, that would be the tumultuous romance between two of the group's most recognizable alumni: Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. It's an epic love story that inspired some of the most iconic rock songs of the 20th century — including 'Silver Springs,' a haunting ballad that Nicks penned about the dissolution of their relationship. (Maybe you've seen that incredible video of Nicks and Buckingham performing it live? If you haven't, stop whatever you're doing and watch it right now. Chills guaranteed.) Last week, Buckingham and Nicks sent Fleetwood Mac fans into a tizzy when they both shared cryptic posts of lyrics from their song 'Frozen Love' on Instagram. Turns out, they were teasing a reissue of their 1973 collaborative album 'Buckingham Nicks,' out Sept. 19. As an astrologer, I'm always curious to see what stars have to say about couples who capture the public's attention. Surprise, surprise: Buckingham and Nicks' synastry — aka the astrology of their relationship and compatibility — unfolds a tale of an intense (and intensely messy) connection. Keep reading for an astrological overview of why this dynamic duo is like that. It Makes Sense Why They Were Drawn To Each Other, At Least Astrologically In case you're new to Fleetwood Mac's extensive lore, here's some context: Nicks and Buckingham first met as high school students in California. Their aforementioned collab album caught the attention of Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood, who asked Buckingham to join the group. He said yes — but only if he could bring his then-girlfriend and musical partner, Nicks. With Buckingham and Nicks involved, '[Fleetwood Mac] became a much more commercially successful band,' music journalist Mark Blake, author of 'Dreams: The Many Lives of Fleetwood Mac,' tells HuffPost. 'They gave the band a greater musical and visual identity.' Astrologically, it's easy to see why these two hit it off initially. Nicks (born May 26, 1948) has her Sun, Mercury and Uranus in buzzy Gemini, hence her distinct, whimsical vibe and natural affinity for songwriting. Not only did she pen some of the band's most well-known hits, 'Nicks was also the closest Fleetwood Mac had to a traditional front-person on stage,' Blake says. Born Oct. 3, 1949, Buckingham has his Sun, Mercury and Neptune in charming Libra, all indicators of his good looks, artsy flair and great ear as a music producer. They're both intelligent, curious, creative people who value exploration and don't want to be pinned down. I'm reminded of the opening verse of 'Frozen Love,' sung by Buckingham: 'You may not be as strong as me / And I may not care to teach you / It may be hard to keep up with me / But I'll always be able to reach you.' Buckingham and Nicks' Venus placements — in Scorpio and Cancer, respectively — reflect their shared sensitivity. When it comes to matters of the heart, they don't skim the surface ― they go deep, potentially to the point of obsession. Additionally, their Venus synastry speaks to their compatibility as artistic collaborators. In that regard, at least, they were on the same wavelength. The Tension Is Written In The Stars Though Fleetwood Mac had broken through, things weren't looking so good behind the scenes for the couple. Buckingham and Nicks' relationship was already falling apart prior to joining the band; success didn't magically fix that. As Nicks told The New Yorker: 'We just put our relationship kind of back together, because I was smart enough to know that, if we had broken up the second month of being in Fleetwood Mac, it would have blown the whole thing.' They split up for real in 1976, roughly two years after joining the band, but kept working together. Dig deeper into their synastry, and the issues in their dynamic appear. For one thing, Buckingham's Aquarius Moon doesn't form a connection to Nick's Capricorn Moon. They process their emotions differently (he needs time and space to think, she's more practical and prefers to work through things). Their chart rulers — aka the planets that rule their respective rising signs and thus represent them in their birth chart — aren't connected either. That might be why Nicks felt like she couldn't be her true self when she was with Buckingham. 'My laughter, the way I could deal with a lot of difficult things, all made him cringe. So I changed when I was around him,' she told Woman's Own magazine in 1990. 'I became mouse-like and would never dare offer a suggestion.' John McVie and Christine McVie, two of their bandmates, also divorced around this time and would only interact to discuss music. All that drama inspired a number of songs on the band's Grammy-winning album 'Rumours' (1977) — and the aforementioned 'Silver Springs,' which, to Nicks' dismay, was omitted from the album and released as a B-side of the first single. 'Do you mean 'Silver Springs,' probably the best song I've ever written?' she recalled asking Fleetwood and Buckingham at the time, per People. 'And they're like, 'Well, yeah. Let's move on with that.'' To make matters worse, Nicks was involved in an affair with Mick Fleetwood, their bandmate. (Fleetwood later went on to have another affair with one of Nicks' good friends. Ouch.) But back to Buckingham and Nicks. At this point, tensions were running so high that they were openly fighting on stage. Nicks had also developed a serious cocaine addiction. Buckingham ended up leaving the band in 1987 to pursue a solo career. Nicks exited a few years later, reportedly due to a fight with Buckingham over the rights to 'Silver Springs.' They both rejoined in '97. However, Nicks refused to perform with Buckingham for the band's final tour in 2018 and 2019, so he left the group. The main astrological culprit for their messiness? Neptune, the planet of dreams, spirituality and delusions. Buckingham's Sun and Mercury are closely conjunct in Nicks' Neptune (in her 7th House of committed relationships, no less). Her Venus squares his Neptune. Hello, confusion! This indicates that Nicks was prone to looking at Buckingham through rose-colored glasses, unable to see and accept him in his totality. Meanwhile, Buckingham was inclined to misinterpret Nicks' desires and bids for affection, warping his perception of their relationship (from 'Go Your Own Way,' which he reportedly wrote as a pointed jab at her: 'Tell me why / Everything turned around / Packing up / Shacking up is all you want to do'). Granted, this complicated synastry explains why they made such poignant, enduringly popular music together. 'People love a love story,' Blake notes, and theirs was certainly one for the ages. It also explains why their relationship (and eventual breakup) was so messy and protracted. As Buckingham told The Times UKin 2021, 'There were a number of years where I wasn't over [Nicks]. It is possible that she has never been completely over me either.' Nicks herself echoed the sentiment in an interview with Jimmy Fallon in 2009: 'Lindsey and I, you know, there will always be that attraction. So it's magical' — another Neptune keyword! — 'and the people see it.' Brought Together By Music — But Stuck Together By Destiny? Not to be dramatic, but I do think Buckingham and Nicks were destined to meet. They both have close aspects to each other's North and South Nodes of the Moon. In astrology, these mathematical points on the Moon's ecliptic represent the skills we've already mastered (South Node) and where we're meant to go in this lifetime (North Node). Buckingham's midheaven, a high point in the birth chart associated with one's career and public image, is conjunct with Nicks' North Node. That means his rise to fame is linked to her life trajectory. Meanwhile, Nicks' ascendant, aka her rising sign, is closely connected to Buckingham's North Node. It's no surprise that he explicitly pushed for Nicks' inclusion in Fleetwood Mac, a move that tied his destiny to hers. 'You'll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you.' Indeed. So, there you have it: Two prolific musicians and ex-lovers, bound together by fate, fame and an extensive catalog of songs they made together. In Nicks' words, 'At 15 and a half, I fell in love with a really handsome boy in Arcadia High School in Los Angeles. Thank God for that, because even though my relationship with Lindsey didn't really end well, the passionate feeling I had for this man — who I still know very well, and, in my own way, will always be crazy about — he brought out [this music].' Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham Just Reignited Rumors About an Unexpected Project

Whatever spell Stevie Nicks cast on Lindsay Buckingham during that fateful 1997 performance of 'Silver Springs,' it doesn't seem to be wearing off any time soon. Nearly three decades later, and her magic is still holding fast: The former couple—whose tumultuous relationship transformed Fleetwood Mac into a rock band as infamous for its romantic dramas as its genre-defining music—are up to something again. This, perhaps, shouldn't come as a surprise to fans who have followed the pair throughout their relationship. (They have, by their own admission, never been great at going their own ways.) But the latest round of buzz comes courtesy of a new project teased on July 17, when Buckingham and Nicks each posted a set of lyrics on their respective social media pages. 'And if you go forward...' Nicks posted, with Buckingham finishing, 'I'll meet you there.' Fans recognized the words as lyrics from 'Frozen Love,' a track off Buckingham Nicks, the 1973 album the couple released together before joining Fleetwood Mac in 1974. The song is central to the band's origin story, having inadvertently earned both Buckingham and Nicks the jobs that would make them famous. As the story goes, co-founder Mick Fleetwood was touring Sound City Studios in Los Angeles one day in 1974 when the house engineer played him Buckingham Nicks, including 'Frozen Love,' which Fleetwood enjoyed so much that he decided he wanted Buckingham to join his group as a guitarist. Buckingham agreed, but only if Nicks got to come with him, too. Buckingham and Nicks went on to mold Fleetwood Mac into a hit engine, with many of their most beloved and famous songs chronicling the relationship between the two (as well as between the group's other members, including Fleetwood, John McVie, and Christine McVie. I mean, Daisy Jones and the Six only scratched the surface when it comes to the tangle of affairs that fueled Fleetwood Mac.) 'Go Your Own Way,' 'Silver Springs,' and 'Dreams' are all (reportedly, anyway) songs Nicks and Buckingham wrote about each other, but Buckingham Nicks itself never received a commercial remaster or digital re-release. Thus the latest theory: After half a century, the album might finally get its moment in the spotlight. On July 21, Los Angeles residents spotted a billboard over Sunset Boulevard featuring the iconic Buckingham Nicks cover—in which both Nicks and Buckingham are topless—alongside the date 'Sept. 19.' Neither Nicks nor Buckingham have posted the billboard or any other information about the potential re-release on their social media, so, for now, we can only await their official confirmation. Either way, a collaboration between the two will inevitably raise some eyebrows: Last fans knew, the two were not on amazing terms. After the death of Christy McVie in 2022, Nicks told Rolling Stone in 2024 that she was 'done with Fleetwood Mac for good,' and that the last time she'd spoken with Buckingham was at Christy's celebration of life. 'The only time I've spoken to Lindsey was there, for about three minutes,' she told the outlet. 'I dealt with Lindsey for as long as I could. You could not say that I did not give him more than 300 million chances.' She later added, 'I wish him the best. I hope he lives a long life and continues to go into a studio and work with other people.' But the latest news from the former lovers certainly implies that, instead, they're working with each other again. After first meeting in high school, Buckingham and Nicks have reunited again and again in service of the extraordinary music they make together. Nicks herself put their reasoning best in a 2023 interview with Vulture: When asked why she'd compared watching Prime Video's Daisy Jones and the Six adaptation to 'a ghost watching my own story,' Nicks said, 'It was the kind of snappy sarcasm between [main characters] Daisy and Billy, who in my mind was like me and Lindsey. It was the back-and-forth between the two of them. It was so two people capture the essence of something that reminds you of your life, it's not like you go, They look just like us or They dress just like us. It's something else. It's a certain feeling that they got when they would look at each other after being in an argument and then they'd start to sing. It would blow your mind. I would be watching and be like, Well, there you go. That's exactly why we did it. That's exactly why Fleetwood Mac stayed together for 50 years. It was all for the music. It was all just to keep the music going.' Suffice to say, Buckingham will indeed never get away from the sound of the woman that loves him—and September 19 can't come soon enough.

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham 'tease Fleetwood Mac reunion' with posts

Fleetwood Mac's estranged lovers Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham have caused fans to 'crash out' with a matching pair of social media posts. The Landslide hitmakers have had a turbulent personal and professional relationship over the years, with the band's chart-topping studio album Rumours written at the time of their breakup in the 70s. The musical duo last performed on stage together in January 2018, with reports of a significant disagreement between the pair over their working schedule sealing the deal on their professional breakup. After bandmate Christine McVie's death in November 2022, the band seemed pretty set on never reuniting on stage, with Stevie focusing on her successful solo career. In a pair of posts made to Instagram earlier today the lead singer, 77, and former guitarist, 75, seemed to imply the almost decade-long rupture might finally be at an end. On Stevie's account she posted the lyrics from 1973 hit Frozen Love: 'And if you go forward' which comes from Buckingham Nicks' only album. Then, Lindsey completed the line with his own post reading: 'I'll meet you there'. There's no denying the two posts are linked in style, theme and timing – leading fans to the conclusion that a longawaited reunion could finally be happening. And everyone is spiralling. 'Glad I was already planning on crashing out today!' yogimagee wrote on Instagram. 'IM GOING TO THROW UP WHATS HAPPENING,' maddieshonholtz added. 'WHAT DOES THIS MEAN' stevienicksnation echoed. Some are sepculating it could mean just a Buckingham Nicks reunion while others think the whole gang could be getting back together. Regardless, everyone wants to see Lindsey and Stevie singing the 1977 tune Silver Springs together live on stage after it recently went viral on TikTok in a trend recounting the pair's heartwrenching romance. 'Forget FM for a minute, just give us a Buckingham Nicks tour please,' andymacphee comics declared. 'Fleetwood Mac reunion in 2025?? A girl can dream,' ahs_adn shared. 'Tell us what's happening before I completely crash out please and thank you,' mejennamarie declared. 'It feels amazing to be alive to witness the stars align like this, It was written,' drimaued shared. Whatever this is, a Fleetwood Mac reunion does still seem unlikely. In June 2024, Stevie told Mojo magazine: 'Without Christine, no can do… There is no chance of putting Fleetwood Mac back together in any way. Without her, it just couldn't work.' More Trending This doesn't rule out an onstage reunion between just these two or remastering of their record , however. Or it could just be their way of telling their fans that the hatchet has finally been buried – time will tell. In an interview with Rolling Stone in October 2024 she said about Lindsey: 'I dealt with Lindsey for as long as I could. You could not say that I did not give him more than 300 million chances.' Meanwhile, last year bandmate Mick Fleetwood added: 'Stevie's able to speak clearly about how she feels and doesn't feel, as does Lindsey. But I'll say, personally, I would love to see a healing between them.' Maybe his wish has finally come true. Got a story?
