Cleverley feels 'well aligned' with Argyle's 'long-term vision'
Tom Cleverley at Home Park last season where he had to watch the game from the stands (Image: PA) Tom Cleverley believes his move to Plymouth Argyle will give him and the club the 'real longevity and stability' they both crave. The former Hornets head coach has been appointed as the Pilgrims' new head coach on a three-year deal barely a month after being sacked at Vicarage Road. Advertisement Tom Cleverley at Home Park last season where he had to watch the game from the stands (Image: PA) 'I'm very honoured and really proud [to be here],' Cleverley said in his first interview with Argyle TV. 'You can see the size of the club when you're sat here [at Harper's Park], the quality of the facilities, the stadium and the size of it in the background. 'As soon as I connected with people at the club, I knew this was a great move for me in my career. I feel like we're both craving real longevity and stability, and that's something that Argyle brings me. I can't wait to get started.' Since his appointment was announced on Friday, it has been confirmed that former Hornets coaches Damon Lathrope and Matt Bevans will be joining Cleverley at the League One club where he feels chairman Simon Hallett, chief executive Andrew Parkinson and head of football operations David Fox share a long-term vision. 'I love how well-balanced and stable the club feels,' Cleverley said. 'That was both from looking at it from the outside, but when you meet Simon, David and Andrew, I felt well aligned. Advertisement 'We're in a results industry, we're in a short-term results industry, but there has to be a long-term vision, a real process to bring you long-term success and stability and to make sure that your performances are sustainable. I think Simon's someone who really understands that part of it.' Cleverley also reflected on his experience at Home Park last season when he was serving a touchline ban and had to watch from the stands as former Watford striker Andre Gray scored a last-gasp equaliser to snatch a 2-2 draw for the hosts in November. 'I've had two experiences of being inside Home Park and the atmosphere, once as a player and once as a coach,' he said. 'It was a little bit of a different experience as the head coach as I was suspended that game, so I was really in and amongst it. 'I saw Andre Gray's equalising goal go in when I was heading from the director's box to the tunnel, and I was as in amongst it as you can possibly get, so I understand how important the atmosphere can be and how good it is here, how passionate people are and ultimately how much the football club behind us really galvanises this community and that's important to me. Advertisement 'I can't wait [to be back]. I'll have to be honest, as a player, I didn't always look forward to seeing the grass again after six weeks off. As a coach, I miss it after three days. This is why you do the long hours. This is why you don't retire as a player and play golf because of the smell of the grass, the sound of the studs clattering, and walking up to the training ground. 'This is football. This is why I love it. I can't wait to meet the players and supporters and get to work on the grass.'

Is Cleverley the right man for the job? Argyle fans have their say
So Plymouth Argyle have got their man in Tom Cleverley. Chairman Simon Hallett says the former Watford boss is the "the perfect person to be our next head coach". But what did you think? Here are some of your takes on Cleverley being the new man in the Argyle dugout. Andy: I welcome any new manager and wish Tom all the best and hope great things come for Argyle. Am still a bit concerned by his lack of experience but every novice manager has to start I am not convinced. I hope I am wrong but really wanted a more experienced manager with proven success. Hoped for Ruben Selles but guess the South West wasn't for As an Argyle fan living in Hertfordshire, I've seen plenty of Watford over recent years. The fans adore Tom Cleverley and you don't reach that status at a club without being top quality. Some fans seem worried that it's another ex-Man Utd player but I see Cleverley having very little in common with Rooney. Andrew: Another unproven manager with little track record but a flashy name who will use us as a stepping stone. But that's what everyone wants. Personally I'd rather we gave it to one of our own like Paul Hopefully now, we have a manager that will be loyal through success and the board loyal to him through the tough times. Give him a full season in charge and see where we are. If promotion does come along, make it very hard for him to leave. Mark: Great appointment after being relegated. Shows ambition to go straight back up with the new early signings. Need a top striker, with [Ryan] Hardie we will be flying. Leonardo: Rooney 2.0? Wish we had gone for an older, wiser, experienced manager to steady the good ship Argyle after recent seasons of turmoil and upheaval, not another experimental unproven project. Surely new young managers should start with a few non-league clubs?Keith: We needed someone with Argyle ties, not another celebrity. No win scenario. Cleverley fails and Argyle fail, or he succeeds and accepts the first offer to go elsewhere. Shilton, Rooney, Cleverley... just another high profile name. Will we ever learn?Phil: Well done to the board for making a decision early. It remains to be seen if it's the right one but Tom has shown qualities needed for success so let's give the man a fair go. A decent start will have the fans backing him to the hilt and quickly forgetting last season's We got the best coach available. The Green Army will back him. He must keep Joe Edwards as he's our captain and leader. His blood flows green and he has the ethos of the club in his Definitely a positive appointment. Thought that Tom was very unlucky to get the sack at Watford. It promises a very attractive brand of football, the way he manages. Hopefully he can get Argyle back in the Championship at the first attempt and can persuade Adam Randell and Ryan Hardie to stay at Delighted. Decent young coach who sold £30m worth of players last summer, reinvested just £3m and still managed to improve on their previous finish.

TOM CLEVERELY has been announced as the new Plymouth Argyle manager. The former Manchester United star beat out Jack Wilshere to be awarded with the job. 2 2 Cleverley was available after he was sacked from his job at Watford due to missing out on the Championship playoffs. He has signed a three-year contract with the Pilgrims and will be aiming to get the club back into the second flight. Chairman Simon Hallett has hailed Cleverley's arrival in the dugout following the controversial exit of Miron Muslic. He said: "Ever since Miron's departure, and knowing Tom was available, we identified him straight away as the perfect person to be our next Head Coach and targeted him immediately. "When we spoke to him he was completely aligned with the vision and ambitions of the club and it was clear throughout that Tom was the right fit for us. "He is fully invested in our long-term plans and will play a key role in helping us achieve them. "He is young, passionate and did a great job at Watford. "We are thrilled to bring him to Argyle and look forward to seeing the impact he has on the talented squad at his disposal." The club was relegated from the Championship last season under Muslic. The Austrian had taken over from Wayne Rooney midway through the season. Despite an upturn in form, the club fell short of survival by just three points as they finished 23rd. The club had hoped that Muslic would remain in his position for the next season but he left for 2. Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04. His exit was confirmed by Argyle on social media with a blunt 13-word statement. It read: "Miron Muslic has left Argyle to join 2. Bundesliga side FC Schalke 04." More to follow... THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY..

New investment in Argyle has fallen through

I no longer believe that news of the new investor is imminent." Hallett says he and the club's existing shareholders - Argyle Green and the Holliday family - will match the level of funding they had planned with the new investor for this season, a level he says is twice the budget the club had when they won League One in Hallett's ownership, Argyle have redeveloped the Mayflower Grandstand and are helping to fund new academy facilities at what was the also bought land adjacent to Home Park to improve the first team's training facilities."I completely understand that this will be very frustrating for fans, as it is extremely frustrating for me and the rest of the Argyle board," he added."I have said constantly that my resources can enable us to be a sustainable Championship club, but that if we wish to aspire beyond that we would need new investment. I can provide some of that new investment, with the Holliday family's and Argyle Green's help, but not all."While progress towards a transaction in its current form looks to have stalled, we will continue to explore alternative routes, including being open to revised terms with other investment groups."It is important we get the right investor, not the quickest investor, and this may take some time. We are committed to this, but in the meantime, current shareholders can (and will) support the club through its next stage of development."

Plymouth owner Hallett agrees to sell stake in club
Plymouth Argyle owner Simon Hallett says he has agreed in principle to sell a stake in the club to new investors. No details of who will be investing have been revealed, how much they will invest or what size of stake they will has been Argyle's majority shareholder since 2018 and made it is his mission to turn the Pilgrims into a sustainable Championship side."We have now reached agreement in principle with a group that will invest in Argyle, and we are in the final stages of due diligence and regulatory approval," he said in a statement."If completed as expected, this transaction will inject new capital into the club in several phases. "The first phase will involve issuing new equity, diluting my stake and those of other shareholders. "Subsequent funds will be available through sponsorship deals and convertible loans, drawn at the club's discretion. "These loans will have favourable interest rates and will eventually convert to equity, allowing the new investors to take a majority ownership position." It is the first major investment in the club since a United States-based group formed Argyle Green LLC and paid £4m for a 20% stake in the club in August a number of the investors sold their stakes back to Hallett, who went on to control 87% of the club at the time. Hallett has been keen to invest in Argyle's infrastructure as well as the team on the field.A new training centre for the club's academy is being built at Brickfields while he has also invested in first-team training facilities and helped fund the rebuilding of the Mayflower Stand. Argyle won promotion back to the Championship in 2023 after being crowned League One champions and secured their survival in the second tier on the final day of last this season they struggled under head coach Wayne Rooney, who was appointed in the former England captain left on 31 December and was replaced by Austrian Miron Argyle got a famous FA Cup win over Premier League leaders Liverpool and had a good spell of results in January and February, they have struggled in the past month and are are bottom of the Championship, six points from safety. Hallett says the new investors are committed to the club, even if they are relegated back to League One. "Securing new investment has taken longer than we hoped because we have been careful in selecting investors who share our vision for Argyle as a financially sustainable, community-focused club striving for success on the pitch," added Hallett."Despite the increased risk of relegation, our new investors remain committed and the agreements in place will not be affected by a potential drop to League One. "While awaiting this investment, Argyle Green and I will continue to provide financial support for both squad improvements and infrastructure projects."Should Argyle go down this season, Hallett said they will have a budget that would be bigger than the one which saw them win League One with a club-record haul of 101 points."Our success off the pitch has enabled us to diversify and grow revenues to record levels," he said. "Should we be relegated, returns on our investments position us well to remain financially strong in League One with the ability to fund a highly competitive first-team squad."A League One budget would be considerably in excess of that with which we were promoted in 2023."
