The Traitors Ireland set to premiere at the end of the month
RTÉ has confirmed that The Traitors Ireland, the highly anticipated Irish version of the reality competition series, will officially premiere on Sunday, 31 August. The series will be hosted by Siobhán McSweeney, best known for her role as Sister Michael in Derry Girls. Set in Slane Castle in County Meath, the show will bring the psychological tension and strategic gameplay of the international format to Irish audiences for the first time. The Traitors, which was originally developed in the Netherlands, has achieved widespread success in several countries, including Britain and the US. The show involves a group of people, referred to as the "Faithful", competing to win a cash prize of €50,000. However, hidden among them are a small number of "Traitors", whose aim is to vote out the other contestants and claim the prize money for themselves. Each episode includes a series of tasks and a group vote, where contestants attempt to identify and banish the people they think are Traitors. If the Faithful successfully remove all Traitors by the final episode, they share the prize money. However, if a Traitor remains undetected, they get the full amount of prize money. RTÉ has described the series as a "spine-tingling" production, filmed in a location that enhances the atmosphere of secrecy and tension. In addition to the main programme, RTÉ will air a companion after-show titled Uncloaked, hosted by comedian Kevin McGahern. The show, produced in RTÉ's Limerick studio, will offer analysis and commentary on each episode, including reactions to key moments and eliminations. The British version, hosted by Claudia Winkleman, attracted more than eight million viewers for its season two finale, while the US version, available via NBCUniversal's Peacock platform, has been renewed for a third, fourth, and fifth season. The Traitors Ireland aims to build on that momentum with a distinctly Irish version of the show. The series will be available to watch weekly on RTÉ One and via RTÉ Player starting 31 August 2025. Revealed: When Ireland's ‘The Traitors' will hit our television screens
RTÉ have announced Sunday, August 31 as the broadcast date for Ireland's version of the hit reality TV show which has already made waves in the UK and US. The Traitors was originally commissioned in the Netherlands and pits three mystery 'Traitors' in a large group of contestants against the 'Faithful' others, with all contestants voting on who they think are the Traitors, resulting in the person receiving the most votes being banished. And there's €50,000 on the table for the person who survives all the votes and reaches the end of the show, whether they are a Traitor or a Faithful. The main show, The Traitors Ireland, will be hosted by Siobhán McSweeney, who played the acerbic Sister Michael in Derry Girls. After-show Uncloaked, hosted by comedian Kevin McGahern, will feature 'all the best analysis and reaction to the latest betrayals, mind games and manipulations'. The show will be set in Slane Castle, while the after-show will be filmed in RTÉ's Limerick studio. The main show will air on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player. Such is the popularity of the UK version of the show hosted by Claudia Winkleman on BBC, the season 2 finale drew in eight million viewers. The US version is available on NBC Universal's streaming service Peacock and is due to return for a third, fourth and fifth season.

Derry Girls reunion! Nicola Coughlan to reunite with co-star for exciting new project
Derry Girls stars Nicola Coughlan and Siobhán McSweeney are set to reunite for an exciting new project. The actors, who played Clare Devlin and Sister Michael on the hit '90s-set comedy series, are teaming up once again for the National Theatre production of John Millington Synge's The Playboy of the Western World. They'll be joined on stage by The Sixth Commandment's Éanna Hardwicke, Declan Conlon, Lorcan Cranitch, Megan Cusack and Marty Rea. Caitríona McLaughlin will direct the play, which will be staged in the Lyttelton Theatre from 4 December 2025 to 28 February 2026. The official synopsis for The Playboy of the Western World reads: "Pegeen Flaherty's life is turned upside down when, on a normal day, a young man walks into her pub claiming that he's killed his father. That is until a second man unexpectedly arrives on the scene…" Coughlan and McSweeney starred in all three seasons of Lisa McGee's award-winning comedy series Derry Girls, which came to an end in 2022. While fans had hoped for either another season or a potential movie spin-off, McSweeney explained she wasn't very keen. Related: "I think the thing that makes shows great is that you want to end them, and don't ruin them by dragging them out for years and years and years," she told Digital Spy back in 2023. "So I think we've left the characters in a good place, a good place of hope, a place of peace. So why not leave them there for the time being? I see Sister Michael every time I open my eyes anyway. She's always with me." The final season of Derry Girls had huge success at the BAFTA TV Awards, where McGee won Best Scripted Comedy and McSweeney won the award for Best Female Comedy Performance.
