Derry Girls reunion! Nicola Coughlan to reunite with co-star for exciting new project

Yahoo04-05-2025

Derry Girls stars Nicola Coughlan and Siobhán McSweeney are set to reunite for an exciting new project.
The actors, who played Clare Devlin and Sister Michael on the hit '90s-set comedy series, are teaming up once again for the National Theatre production of John Millington Synge's The Playboy of the Western World.
They'll be joined on stage by The Sixth Commandment's Éanna Hardwicke, Declan Conlon, Lorcan Cranitch, Megan Cusack and Marty Rea.
Caitríona McLaughlin will direct the play, which will be staged in the Lyttelton Theatre from 4 December 2025 to 28 February 2026.
The official synopsis for The Playboy of the Western World reads: "Pegeen Flaherty's life is turned upside down when, on a normal day, a young man walks into her pub claiming that he's killed his father.

"Instead of being shunned, the killer Christy Mahon becomes a local hero. The welcome murderer wins hearts and races as he beds himself into village life. That is until a second man unexpectedly arrives on the scene…"
Coughlan and McSweeney starred in all three seasons of Lisa McGee's award-winning comedy series Derry Girls, which came to an end in 2022.
While fans had hoped for either another season or a potential movie spin-off, McSweeney explained she wasn't very keen.

"I think the thing that makes shows great is that you want to end them, and don't ruin them by dragging them out for years and years and years," she told Digital Spy back in 2023.
"So I think we've left the characters in a good place, a good place of hope, a place of peace. So why not leave them there for the time being? I see Sister Michael every time I open my eyes anyway. She's always with me."
The final season of Derry Girls had huge success at the BAFTA TV Awards, where McGee won Best Scripted Comedy and McSweeney won the award for Best Female Comedy Performance.

Beloved twisty detective drama that's "one of ITV's most-watched" confirms July return with first look

Karen Pirie, the beloved detective drama from ITV, has confirmed its return with several first-look images. The three-part series, which premiered in 2022, followed the titular character (Lauren Lyle), a detective sergeant who is placed in charge of a 25-year-old cold case involving the unsolved murder of a barmaid. After becoming one of ITV's "most-watched" shows, the broadcaster renewed the series for a second season, and fans now finally have a month to mark in the calendar after it was confirmed that Karen Pirie will return to screens in July with a trio of two-hour episodes. The announcement also came with some first-look images, showcasing the titular character in her new role as detective inspector. Fans can also get a glimpse of Chris Jenks, who reprises his role as "loveable sidekick" DC Jason Murray. Based on Val McDermid's A Darker Domain, the second season sees Karen "seemingly given the authority she has long been fighting for". Just as she acclimatises to her "powerful" new role, the inspector is assigned an "infamous" unsolved case that will put her under "intense scrutiny". Related: The 30-year-old case, which is said to have "confounded investigators" and "intrigued the public", concerns the disappearance of a "charming" young heiress and her two-year-old son, with the pair vanishing after ransom demands from their kidnappers were not met. A twist comes, however, as the body of a man linked to the original kidnap is discovered. With the first new piece of evidence in decades, Karen assembles an "unbeatable team" for the "biggest challenge" of their careers. Facing pressure from her boss, the media and "sinister" forces, Karen delves deeper into the "internationally renowned" case, discovering "political grudges" and "painful secrets" as it becomes increasingly apparent that the "past is far from dead". Related: The return of the series will delight fans and critics alike, with the first season of the detective drama currently boasting an impressive approval rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes from 11 reviews. The site's critical consensus noted that the "clever and twisty" series "revamped" the "traditional grizzle detective procedural", while The Independent praised the show for telling its story in a "refreshingly cohesive" manner. Karen Pirie will return on ITV in July. Digital Spy's first print magazine is here! Why Nicola Coughlan Is the Soul of ‘Bridgerton' and Deserves an Emmy Nomination

Anyone who's seen Nicola Coughlan in 'Derry Girls' knows that she's a brilliant comedic performer. As nerdy teenager Clare Devlin, Coughlan made teenage anxiety immensely physical and palpable — firing her dialogue with all the air in her lungs, walking with so much propulsive energy she was nearly tripping over herself. In 'Bridgerton' Season 3, Coughlan similarly portrays adolescent turmoil, but through subtler and more internal means. As wallflower Penelope Featherington, who harbors a double identity as the controversial Lady Whistledown, Coughlan was tasked not just with making the ton's resident introvert a mesmerizing lead but also with bringing humanity to her character's morally ambiguous actions. More from Variety 'Last of Us' Creator Craig Mazin Reminds Angry Fans That Pedro Pascal Lives On, Even if His Character Doesn't: 'He's Alive and He's in Literally Everything Else' 'Severance' Creator Dan Erickson Discusses the 'Depressing' Lumon Industries - While Touring Lumen, the Actual Name for Variety's Office Building 'There Is No Feud': Walton Goggins and Aimee Lou Wood Tell All on Their 'White Lotus' Connection, a Cut Love Scene and Yes, Why He Unfollowed Her on Instagram Coughlan nails it: the hit Netflix show's third season sees Penelope fully step into the spotlight as a romantic interest. In Penelope's evolution, Coughlan captures how a young woman's coming of age is defined as much by her own personal choices as it is by her struggle against society's expectations for women. And Coughlan makes a case for herself as an excellent dramatic lead, the kind that Emmy voters should pay attention to. That's because Coughlan has to reconcile two conflicting aspects of her character. One is the standard teenage heroine. Penelope previously existed mainly on the sidelines, a spinster-to-be. Her transformation into the center of attention is literally represented through a glow-up: there's a scene in which she enters a ballroom sporting a completely different fashion and hair and makeup. Coughlan's tentative delight as she notices the amount of eyes on her instantly makes viewers root for her. She establishes Penelope as our favorite underdog. This idea is complicated by the fact that Penelope wields actual power as the anonymous writer behind an all-knowing gossip rag that can completely make or break someone's reputation. The journey that Penelope undergoes in becoming the main character is something Lady Whistledown already pulled off; Penelope has been the main character all along; it's just that now, she must own up to that status — including the hurt she caused to attain it. It's to Coughlan's credit that these emotional threads stay together. She grounds Penelope's characterization in a fundamental sincerity. Penelope's flaws are humanizing, never outright villainous, and neither are they completely ignored. She's an intelligent young person, but she's not immune to her age. Coughlan realistically captures what it's like to be in the throes of adolescence, fumbling toward the person you want to be. Take, for instance, the scenes when Penelope tries to flirt with a gentlemen for the first time. Her awkward attempts at conversation are incredibly entertaining and charming as Coughlan leans into the cringe. For all of Penelope's brilliance as a proto-journalist, she can't help her social inexperience. Similarly, Coughlan taps into a universal feeling when Penelope asks her childhood friend and longtime crush, Colin Bridgerton, to kiss her. Having just run away from a ballroom where everyone had been talking judgmentally about her, Penelope tells Colin, 'It would not have to mean anything.' Simply, 'I do not wish to die without ever having been kissed.' Coughlan brings heart and sensitivity to Penelope's longing for romantic validation. And in Penelope's pragmatic pursuit of a husband, Coughlan translates her character's internal struggle. Penelope must secure a marriage, but she's cautious about her romantic decisions, as she prizes her independence and, of course, her work. A shot of Coughlan's serving face in the midst of scribbling is certainly memeable, but Coughlan does make the viewer understand the gravity of Penelope's intellectual endeavors and her hesitation at giving them up for love. The night before Penelope's wedding to Colin, she tells dressmaker Madame Delacroix that 'I felt like I was losing a part of myself' when she attempted to stop writing. It is her ultimate form of self-expression. That's where Lady Whistledown originated from: a young woman's desire for agency. If Penelope's approach was messy and slightly misguided, Coughlan's portrayal indicates that her actions as Lady Whistledown sometimes reflected the missteps of youth. 'You were a girl who did not know her own power,' Madame Delacroix also reminds her. And so Coughlan imbues Penelope's acceptance of accountability with the same earnestness that she treats her character's first romantic encounters. Penelope decides that going forward, she'll punch up rather than punch down. As she states at one point, 'I should've been using the column to give a voice to the other voiceless.' Despite the clichéd declaration, Coughlan makes Penelope's good intentions and activist dedication believable. The night before her wedding, Madame Delacroix tells Penelope that 'there's no such thing as true love without first embracing your true self.' By the end, we see Penelope accept who she is, wallflower and alter ego combined. It's because of Coughlan's nuanced performance that this merging of selves lands so seamlessly. Emmerdale airs heartbreaking update on Nate's daughter in early ITVX episode

follow from , which is available to watch now on ITVX but hasn't yet aired on ITV1. Emmerdale airs the emotional fallout from Nate Robinson's death tonight – as Tracy reveals how their young daughter Frankie is responding to the terrible news. As suspicion and accusations continue to run rife around the village, there's a sobering moment as Tracy explains that 4-year-old Frankie is struggling to understand her father's fate. Tracy insists on working as usual at the local shop, but her boss Eric Pollard fears that she needs to take some time out. When Eric questions how things are at home, Tracy replies: "Frankie doesn't really understand that her dad's properly gone forever. "And I don't really know how to feel." Related: Later, Belle Dingle pays a visit to Tracy at home to check on her. Tracy explains that she's made little progress with helping Frankie to understand the reality of the situation. Tracy says: "She's [upstairs] watching cartoons for 10 minutes. A nice distraction, because she doesn't understand why her mum's so upset all the time." The emotional scenes come as two opposing theories over Nate's fate dominate discussion in the village. Tracy is convinced that Cain Dingle was responsible for Nate's demise, as he violently attacked his son on the day that he disappeared from the village. Related: Cain, meanwhile, reckons Tracy is deflecting to cover up her own guilt in the case. With everyone on the wrong track, it's good news for Nate's real killer John Sugden. John accidentally caused Nate's death last September and hid his body in a local lake. So far, nobody suspects that he's responsible for the terrible crime. Related: Amy Walsh, who plays Tracy, recently said: "Everything that unfolds after the initial news of Nate's death is just heartbreaking. And obviously the main person Tracy's thinking of in all of this is Frankie. "It's that whole concept of Frankie losing him as a dad and how amazing he was as a dad to her. And weirdly, how amazing Jurell [Carter, who played Nate] was with Frankie, who's played by Eden [Ratcliffe-Knights]. "It pulls on the heartstrings a bit for me, I have to say." Emmerdale airs these scenes tonight at 7.30pm on ITV1. The episode is also streaming now on airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
