The illegal immigrants detained in Sandakan. SANDAKAN (June 4): A total of 238 illegal immigrants were detained by the Sabah Immigration Department during an operation here early Wednesday morning. Sabah Immigration director Datuk SH Sitti Saleha Habib Yussof said the operation, which began at 1.30am, targeted workers' quarters at several construction sites and factories in Sandakan. 'A total of 480 individuals were screened during the operation, and 238 were held for various offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and the Immigration Regulations 1963,' she said in a statement. Those detained comprised 88 men, 88 women, 30 boys and 32 girls. To date, the Immigration Department has arrested 2,730 illegal immigrants and 53 employers for multiple immigration-related offences. Additionally, 6,058 illegal immigrants have been deported under the foreign prisoner transfer program. Sitti Saleha emphasized that similar enforcement operations would continue and reminded foreign nationals to ensure they have valid documentation before seeking employment in the country.

Sabah Immigration Department director Datuk Sitti Saleha Habib Yussof said the group was sent to Zamboanga City via sea on Thursday. Prior to their deportation, they had spent months, and in some cases years, in custody at Immigration depots in Papar, Sandakan and Tawau. Sitti Saleha said the group of illegal immigrants comprised 438 men, 140 women, 98 boys and 93 girls, aged between three months and 73. 'This is part of our ongoing efforts to deport all the detainees in our detention centres statewide,' she said. A total of 4,762 Filipinos have been deported so far this year.

KOTA KINABALU (May 2): Thirteen Pakistani and Indian nationals have been deported back to their countried by the State Immigration Department for staying in the state illegally. Sabah Immigration Director SH Sitti Saleha Habib Yussof, in a statement on Friday said the illegal immigrants were deported by air from the Kota Kinabalu International Airport on May 1. She said seven of the Pakistanis were from the Kota Kinabalu Immigration Deportation Centre, four from the Sandakan Immigration Deportation Centre and one l from the Tawau Immigration Deportation Centre, while an Indian man was from the Sandakan Immigration Deportation Centre. Sitti Saleha said as of May 1 this year, the State Immigration Department had deported 67 Pakistani and four Indian nationals by air, which brings the total number of illegal immigrants deported to 4,847 people. She said all the illegal immigrants had completed their prison sentences and have international passports for immediate transfer to avoid long detention periods. Sitti Saleha added that the Sabah State Immigration Department would not compromise with any foreign national who misused the passes and facilities provided. Court action will be taken against employers and premises owners who employ foreign nationals without valid travel documents and passes and individuals who violate the conditions of passes or permits as stipulated in Act 155 and the Immigration Regulations 1963.

KOTA KINABALU: A total of 623 undocumented migrants have been deported to Zamboanga City in the Philippines from Sandakan. Sabah Immigration Department director Datuk Sitti Saleha Habib Yusoff said they comprised 483 men, 80 women, and 60 children including babies, ranging in age from 11 months to 79 years. They were transferred to the port from the Papar and Sandakan immigration depot, she added. She said all those deported had committed offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and the Immigration Regulations 1963, including entering the country without a valid pass or staying beyond the allowed period. 'They served out their detention and were allowed to return home after completing the repatriation documentation," she added. They have also been blacklisted and will not be allowed to re-enter Malaysia, she said in a statement on Friday (April 25). Sitti Saleha said the transfer process was enabled by the close cooperation of the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, which helped issue valid travel documents to the detainees. 'This year to date, 3,993 Filipinos have been successfully repatriated from Sabah, bringing the total number of foreign citizens deported to 4,834. 'Sabah Immigration will not compromise with any individual or party who abuses immigration facilities, including employers and premises owners who employ foreign workers without valid documents. 'Strict action, including prosecution, will be taken against any party who violates the law," she added. Sitti Saleha also urged all quarters, especially employers, to ensure that foreign worker recruitment is carried out through legal channels and to ensure that foreigners enter the state according to protocol. She said the department would conduct enforcement operations in the state from time to time.
