British financial consultant pleads not guilty to molesting man in Petaling Jaya
PETALING JAYA, Aug 12 — A British national working as an independent financial consultant pleaded not guilty in the Magistrate's Court here today to a charge of outraging the modesty of a man in a hotel room earlier this month. Adekoya Oluwatoyosi Osideinde, 31, from Bath, United Kingdom, was charged with committing the act against a 47-year-old Indonesian man in a hotel room in Lorong Utara, here, at 8.34 am on Aug 2. The charge was framed under Section 354 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum jail term of 10 years or a fine or whipping or any two of these punishments, upon conviction. Deputy Public Prosecutor Lim Leong Hui did not offer bail, but lawyer R. Sivaraj, representing the accused, requested a lower bail on the grounds that his client supports his 70-year-old mother in the United Kingdom. 'My client is a tourist in Malaysia, and his tourist visa is still valid until September. He is also willing to accept any additional conditions that the court may impose,' said Sivaraj. Magistrate Shahril Anuar Ahmad Mustapha allowed the accused bail at RM6,000 with two Malaysian sureties and set Oct 2 for case mention. — Bernama

UK man claims trial to alleged sexual assault on Indonesian man
PETALING JAYA: A British tourist claimed trial at the magistrate's court today to a charge of using criminal force to outrage the modesty of an Indonesian man earlier this month. Adekoya Oluwatoyosi Osideinde, 31, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read out to him before Magistrate Shahril Anuar Ahmad Mustapha. "I understand (the charge). Not guilty," he said from the dock. The bespectacled accused, dressed in a purple prison outfit, was brought into the courtroom at about 9.40am. He was seen clasping his hands together during the proceedings. Earlier, when the case was called with his name, Osideinde stood up and said, "Yes, that is me." His lawyer, Sivaraj Retinasekharan, requested that the charge be read out in English to ensure his client fully understood the allegation. According to the charge sheet, the foreigner was accused of committing the act against the 47-year-old victim at about 8.34am in a hotel room here on Aug 2. The charge, under Section 354 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum 10-year jail term, or a fine, or whipping, or any combination of these, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Lim Leong Hui did not offer bail and asked the court to set a date for document submission. In his bail application, Sivaraj asked that his client be granted minimal bail. "He is a freelance independent wealth consultant with a valid tourist visa until September. "He is innocent until proven guilty. Setting a high bail sum would amount to punishing him. "If it is too high and he cannot afford it, he will remain in jail until the case is resolved, which may take up to a year," he said. Sivaraj said his client had previously been charged in a separate drug case at the magistrate's court and was granted bail of RM5,000 with two sureties. "There is no probability he will abscond on future court dates. "He cooperated fully during investigations. Two local friends are willing to be his bailors and will ensure his attendance in court. "I ask that a low bail be imposed, with two sureties, and that he is to report to the Petaling Jaya district police headquarters. "We have no objection to the court impounding his passport, which is still valid," he said. The magistrate granted the foreigner bail of RM6,000 with two sureties and set Oct 2 for mention. After proceedings, Sivaraj said his client's friends would post bail, though he was unsure whether it would be done today or tomorrow.

History-sheeter murder: Inspector and SI of Kattumannarkoil police station suspended for negligence
CUDDALORE: Villupuram range deputy inspector general of police Disha Mittal on Thursday suspended inspector S Arumugam and sub-inspector M Anbalagan of the Kattumannarkoil police station for alleged negligence in handling a prior complaint related to a clash that eventually led to the murder of a 23-year-old history-sheeter. Cuddalore district superintendent of police S Jeyakumar also suspended special sub-inspector Raja from the Special Branch for failing to promptly inform higher officials about the earlier clash and the murder. According to police sources, the victim, K Praveen Raj, a resident of Koilpathu under Kattumannarkoil Municipality, was hacked to death by a gang of seven on Wednesday due to previous enmity. 'Investigation revealed that on June 6, Praveen Raj was involved in a clash with P Sivaraj (21) and R Sakthivel (19) from the same locality after allegedly speeding on his motorbike. Their friends R Senthil Kumar (22) and S Manikandan (21) questioned him about the incident. In a fit of rage, Praveen Raj allegedly attacked three of them with a knife,' said a police officer. On June 7, Sivaraj lodged a complaint at the Kattumannarkoil police station. However, inspector Arumugam and sub-inspector Anbalagan did not register a case and instead called both parties for a compromise. Following this, Manikandan, Sivaraj, Senthil Kumar, Sakthivel, along with R Kaviyarasu, Aadhavan, and Vivekanandan alias Kutty, allegedly called Praveen Raj to a location, attacked him with an iron rod, and hacked him to death with machetes. The incident took place near Kattumannarkoil, sources added. Though local residents initially refused to hand over the body in protest, SP S Jeyakumar visited the spot and held talks with the villagers. After this, the body was sent to Government Villupuram MCH for postmortem. Based on a complaint from Ahalya, a relative of the deceased, a murder case was registered. Five of the accused — Manikandan, Sivaraj, Kaviyarasu, Senthil Kumar, and Sakthivel — were arrested. Police said two others, Aadhavan and Vivekanandan, are absconding and search is on. Since Praveen Raj belonged to a SC, the police have registered a case under the SC/ST Act along with murder charges. Police sources said that Praveen Raj was involved in several criminal cases.
