Fatal Johor crash: Bezza slams into lorry, driver dies on spot, Singaporean later at hospital

JOHOR BAHRU, July 20 — An e-hailing driver and a Singaporean passenger died after the car they were travelling in crashed into a lorry at Kilometre 9, Jalan Johor Bahru–Air Hitam heading to Skudai, this morning. North Johor Bahru district police chief ACP Balveer Singh Mahindar Singh said the incident occurred at about 11.27 am when a Perodua Bezza car driven by a 48-year-old local man was believed to have lost control before hitting the left rear of a Mitsubishi Fuso lorry. 'The car, believed to be travelling from Johor Bahru to Skudai, was carrying a 27-year-old Singaporean male passenger. 'As a result of the collision, the car driver suffered serious head injuries and was confirmed dead at the scene while his passenger died while receiving treatment at Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA), Johor Bahru,' he said in a statement today. Meanwhile, he said the lorry driver, a 28-year-old local man, did not suffer any injuries. He added that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. He also called on the public with information regarding the incident to contact Investigating Officer, Inspector Zulhisyam Aziz at 019-7432966 to assist in the investigation. — Bernama

Court acquits labourer of double murder in Johor Bahru

M Jaykumar was charged with the murders of K Kamala, 51, and S Silvaraja 59, at a flat in Skudai between 7pm on Oct 31 and 3am on Nov 1, 2018. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Johor Bahru High Court today discharged and acquitted a labourer of a charge of murdering a single mother and her male friend at a flat at Taman Ungku Aminah in Skudai, Johor Bahru, seven years ago. Justice Abu Bakar Katar made the ruling after finding that the prosecution had failed to establish a prima facie case against M Jaykumar, 39, at the close of its case. In his judgment, Bakar said the prosecution failed to prove that the deaths of K Kamala, 51, and S Silvaraja, 59, were caused by injuries inflicted by the accused. He said the court also took into account that no traces of the victims' blood were found on the accused's clothes or belongings, and that the investigating officer did not seize these items to test for the victims' DNA. 'The prosecution also failed to prove that the jewellery pawned by the accused belonged to Kamala, as her children could not confirm its ownership during testimony. 'There is reasonable doubt since some jewellery was still found with Kamala. 'The prosecution attempted to rely on the theory that the accused was the last person seen with the victims, setting the timeline between 7pm on Oct 31 and 3am on Nov 1. 'However, according to a witness, Kamala was still on the phone at 11.50pm. How could the prosecution fix 7pm as the starting time when the victim was still alive? 'This court finds that without other supporting evidence, it is insufficient to link the accused to the murders,' the judge said. Jaykumar was charged with the murders of Kamala and Silvaraja at a flat at Jalan Hang Jebat 14, Taman Ungku Aminah, between 7pm and 3am on Oct 31 and Nov 1, 2018. The charge, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, provides for the death penalty, or 30 to 40 years' jail and no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. Twenty witnesses were called by the prosecution, led by deputy public prosecutor Juanita Said, while Jaykumar was represented by lawyers Freda Sabapathy and K Sarawanan.

Cops rule out loan shark involvement in Johor teacher's death

Iskandar Puteri police chief M Kumarasan said Lo Kwan Fong was an only child and both her parents were deceased. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Police have ruled out any criminal link to illegal moneylending syndicates in the death of a female teacher whose decomposed body was found in her home in Bandar Selesa Jaya, Skudai, Iskandar Puteri, on June 13. According to Bernama, Iskandar Puteri police chief M Kumarasan said although Lo Kwan Fong, 39, had previously borrowed RM20,000 from a loan shark, the debt had been fully settled. He said preliminary investigations also found no incidents of paint splashing or threats against the victim — tactics commonly used by loan sharks to pressure debtors into repaying their debts. 'The deceased had previously lodged a report, which was investigated under Section 5(2) of the Moneylenders Act 1951. However, after clearing all her debts, there were no further police reports. 'Neighbours also confirmed that no loan sharks had come to throw paint at her house,' he was quoted as saying. Kumarasan said checks with the national registration department revealed that Lo was an only child and both her parents had died. To date, her remains have yet to be claimed by her next of kin. 'We will discuss this further with the hospital. 'After two weeks, the body will be released to Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) for them to appoint a private funeral service,' he said, adding that several parents of her students had expressed their willingness to assist in funeral arrangements. Kumarasan added police were informed that Lo has an aunt in Singapore, but they do not have further information about her. Lo was found dead in her home on June 13 after neighbours detected a foul smell and alerted the Nusa Bestari police station. Investigations indicated she had likely died about a month before her body was discovered. A post-mortem conducted by a forensic pathologist at HSA concluded that the cause of death was 'unascertained due to advanced decomposition'.
