Heavy rain; Isolated flash flooding possible Saturday
All is quiet around the region tonight, but that will change as we move towards dawn Saturday morning. Our storm system looks to be tracking a bit further inland, bringing some of the higher rainfall totals to our region, and increasing our risk for flash flooding. Although most of our larger waterways look to remain within their banks (Otter Creek is the only spot expected to enter 'Action Stage') but sharp rises on smaller streams and creeks could wash out dirt roads and clog culverts. Rainfall totals range between 1-2″ for most folks, but some isolated locations east of the Green Mountains could reach 2-3″+ The clouds hold on Sunday, but we're only left with a few sprinkles or spot showers and temperatures climb into the upper 50's and lower 60's for both days this weekend! Sunshine is back for Memorial Day Monday
The long holiday weekend forecast will get better with age! Here is what we're expecting: Saturday is a very similar weather day to Friday, with cool temperatures in the 40's and lower 50's, low hanging clouds and off and on sprinkles or showers! Just down right gloomy! But we start to turn a corner Sunday, with temperatures inching up to the upper 50's and lower 60's and a few afternoon breaks of blue sky. We're also watching for the chance for a few additional spot showers or quick downpours, especially through the North Country and Champlain Valley. Memorial Day Monday will finally be the bright, seasonable weather we've been waiting all week for! Expect partly to mostly sunny skies, and temperatures climbing into the upper 60's and lower 70's. There is the smallest chance for a quick mountain sprinkle or quick shower during the afternoon, bubbling up in the heat of the day, otherwise most are remaining dry! Periods of rain and drizzle into the weekend
The forecast for our Nor'easter is on track so far, with rainfall totals in Southern Vermont starting to approach the half inch mark, with only a few hundredths of an inch for parts of the Champlain Valley and North Country. And the higher elevations are seeing the flakes! Look at the top of Mount Mansfield this evening! You can almost feel the chill! The rain will continue to fill in overnight, with the low pressure system making it's closest pass to the region. By daybreak the heaviest will come to an end and we'll be left with off and on periods of rain and drizzle for the rest of the day Friday and through Saturday. As the storm system wrings out every last bit of moisture it has, another 0.5-1.0″ can be expected east of the Greens, with another quarter to half inch for the Champlain Valley and North Country. Drying out and slowly clearing out for Sunday, and skies look to be partly to mostly sunny for Memorial Day!
