Sligo GAA unveil 'dream team' as joint managers and surprise big name coach

Sligo GAA have appointed Eamonn O'Hara and Dessie Sloyan as joint managers - with Donegal All-Ireland winner Eamon McGee also part of a dream ticket. All Star forward O'Hara and his former Sligo team mate Sloyan have been handed a three year term with a review at the end of every season. The new Sligo Head Coach will be Con O'Meara, who was joint manager of the Coolera-Strandhill side, alongside John McPartland, which landed a shock Connacht title last year and have gone back-to-back in the county. This is former Donegal star Eamon McGee's first foray into inter-county coaching. Sloyan (Easkey) and O'Hara (Tourlestrane), who have enjoyed major success on the coaching front, will make further additions to their backroom team. The duo led Sligo to their first ever Connacht under-20 title (2022) with Sloyan as manager and O'Hara as coach, while Sloyan was Longford Head Coach for the past two seasons. Sloyan is also in his third year as a coach/selector with Mayo side Knockmore and was also a Sligo selector for three years under Kevin Walsh (2009-11). O'Hara, who boasts an incredible record on the club managerial scene, is currently managing Roscommon club Boyle. The 2002 All Star managed Mohill (Letirim) to county titles in 2023 and 2024 and was joint manager with his own Tourlestrane for a county five in a row (2016-20). Sean Boyle continues at the team's strength and conditioning coach, with Stephen Gilmartin (Tubbercurry) staying on as team doctor. Alan Dunne is lead physio and rehabilitation and Aidan Carty continues as kit man. Sligo have also appointed an under-20 football manager, with Stephen Henry (Tourlestrane) taking over for the 2026 season. Meanwhile, Limerick man Tom Hennessy will manage the Sligo hurlers on a two year term with an annual review. Hennessy was lead coach with the team in 2025. He will be joined by Reece Armstrong and specialist goalkeeping coach Derek Kelly. Sligo GAA chairperson Declan Rouse praised the candidates who had come forward for the various posts. He said: 'There has been a lot of work done over the past decade not only to develop our games but also to develop coaches and coaching. 'It is very gratifying to see coaching teams of real quality and depth coming through at all levels within Sligo up to and including our senior teams. 'We wish each of the teams selected and their playing panels every success for the 2026 season.'

University charts remarkable link to Donegal's All Ireland team

No fewer than 19 players and 11 members of the management and support team involved in this weekend's All-Ireland final squad have a direct link to ATU. 'This is a truly extraordinary story of connection, support and long-standing partnership,' said Dr Orla Flynn, President of ATU. 'A massive number of past and current ATU students will line out for Donegal this Sunday at the All-Ireland final.' ATU and Donegal GAA have worked in close partnership for many years, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that also extends to Sligo GAA. The collaboration focuses on athlete development, education, and welfare — and Sunday's sporting occasion is proof of its impact. 'The majority of the players and backroom team have come through our Letterkenny campus, and a number have strong links to our Sligo campus as well,' Dr Flynn added Among the many influential figures connected to ATU, few stand taller than Michael Murphy — the former All Star and iconic captain who famously led Donegal to their last All-Ireland title in 2012. Murphy retired from inter-county football in 2022, drawing a close to a glittering career that left an indelible mark on the game. However, in a dramatic return to the panel in November 2024, Murphy re-joined the Donegal setup, bringing with him invaluable leadership, experience. Now serving as Head of Sport at ATU Donegal, Murphy bridges the gap between education and sport in a unique way. His dual role reflects the university's ambition to provide a home for emerging athletes, combining academic achievement with elite sporting development. His return to the Donegal setup this season has been seen as a symbolic and strategic moment in Donegal's resurgence. Other standout names among the panel include Ryan McHugh, Jamie Brennan, Peadar Mogan, Caolan Ward, Eoghan Bán Gallagher, and Michael Langan — all of whom studied at ATU. Rising stars such as Luke McGlynn, Odhran Doherty, and Cian McMenamin are current students balancing lectures with championship pressure. In the backroom and coaching setup, ATU's influence is just as evident. Figures like Luke Barrett, Colm McFadden, Neil McGee, Tommy Devine, and Antoin McFadden — all of whom are past or present students or staff — are helping steer Donegal's preparation and performance from the sidelines. As Donegal eyes a third Sam Maguire, the county jersey will be worn with pride by a team deeply intertwined with ATU. ATU's sporting pride isn't just focused on football this weekend — there's also huge excitement building in Galway, where the senior camogie team are set to take on Tipperary in the All-Ireland Senior Championship Semi-Final this Saturday, July 26th. Current ATU students Shannon Corcoran and Ava Lynskey, and former students Sarah Healy and Ann Marie Starr are representing the Tribeswomen this weekend. ATU is also represented on the coaching side, with Adrian Pilkington and Ewan Cunningham both serving as strength and conditioning coaches. Dr Flynn added, 'When you see the scale of this, it shows how our commitment to sport and education is helping shape elite performance and leadership in Gaelic games across the region. We wish the Donegal team the very best of luck this Sunday and also the Galway camogie team on Saturday.' Sligo GAA TV to stream over 20 games of Club Championship

Sligo GAA has agreed a sponsorship for its Sligo GAA TV streaming service with Bunninadden based Agricultural services company Brennan Agri Services. The deal will support the provision of over 20 matches which will enable Sligo GAA to share its games with those that are unable to travel or are living away from home. Sligo GAA Chairman Declan Rouse said: 'The streaming of our club games has rapidly become a recognised part of the championship experience. There is a real demand, particularly from those that are living away from home, and we are delighted to link up with a committed local sponsor and a local broadcast services provider to create that opportunity for our supporters'. The SligoGAATV service is provided to Sligo GAA by highly experienced Sligo based broadcast producer Rory O'Brien, who has been working almost 20 years in the streaming production space. This year SligoGAATV will show two games in each round of the group stages of the Homeland Senior Football Championship with each club in the competition featuring at least once. Once the competition moves to the knockout stages it will be showing action from each of the Homeland Senior, Connacht Gold Intermediate and Connacht Gold Junior Football championships as well as the final of the Davis's Yeats Tavern Senior Hurling Championship. SligoGAATV uses broadcast grade cameras and equipment to provide a full 1080p HD stream – a similar standard to that used by established national providers such as TG4 and GAA+. It works in collaboration with Ocean FM on the provision of commentary and analysis In addition, the SligoGAATV website provides access to a full archive of all the games that it has covered since 2020. In a new development this year it will also host galleries of photographs from as many of the Sligo championship games as it is able to cover. Mr O'Brien added: 'With advances in technology, the ability to create high quality recordings and transmissions is now at our fingertips. Initially it was only possible to transmit out of a small number of, mainly, urban based grounds but each year that number grows and as the national telecommunications infrastructure grows, so too will our capacity to transmit from new locations'. Brennan Agri Services has over 30 years of service to Sligo farmers in pit and baled silage production, ploughing and reseeding, umbilical and tank slurry spreading and lime spreading. Owner Richard Brennan, who has had a lifelong association with the GAA in his native Bunninadden and with Sligo GAA said: 'I have seen first-hand the interest in watching games live even when supporters can't attend in person. I am delighted to have the opportunity to support the provision of our games to a wider audience. It also enables people living away from home, those who are older or those that are ill to stay in touch with the progress of their local club'.
