We all know the dangers of poor sleep. Here's what it does to your skin
This story is part of the June 1 edition of Sunday Life. See all 14 stories. It's well known that an unsettled night's sleep can lead to lacklustre skin. When you sleep, skin goes into repair mode, so if your sleep patterns are erratic it will show on your face the next day. Bad sleep affects collagen production, which is essential for maintaining skin hydration and elasticity, and a lack of sleep can cause inflammation and a compromised skin barrier. Face-planting into your pillow can also leave creases on your skin. 'Bad sleep is often due to stress, which has a significant impact on skin, and chronic sleep restriction is much worse than a short-term sleep issue,' says Sydney dermatologist Dr Ritu Gupta. She says poor sleep leads to collagen breaking down and decreased skin-barrier function, which means increased susceptibility to eczema, irritation and infection. 'Collagen breakdown accelerates the ageing process, and a lack of sleep also decreases the lipids in the skin, which leads to it sagging.' So how much sleep is enough? The general rule of thumb is eight hours. Here are a few tips to help your skin get a good night's sleep. Elevate your head by sleeping on two pillows, ideally in silk pillowcases such as those from Slip ($115). Elevation decreases facial swelling and improves blood flow and lymphatic drainage, says Gupta. 'Some extension of the neck means that finally our 'tech necks' can have a much-needed rest. Having your neck constantly flexed by looking at a phone screen creates horizontal lines. Sleeping slightly elevated means a reprieve from that position.' Loading If you're able to sleep on your back, this helps reduce the chest and face wrinkles that can occur if you are a side or tummy sleeper. Try an Orthopaedic cervical pillow ($80, from Ergonomist) that cradles your neck, keeping it properly aligned with your head and shoulders. This helps reduce pressure on the neck muscles. Night creams, with their rich, hydrating ingredients to plump, firm and brighten, are bedtime essentials. An oldie but goodie is Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair ($199) with tripeptide-32, hyaluronic acid and polyglutamic acid. Peptides serve as messengers between skin cells to encourage them to produce more collagen, accelerating wound healing and protecting the skin barrier. For more nighttime magic, we like Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Retinol Pro+ Night Cream ($33). And for eyes, try Medik8 Advanced Night Eye ($96), which has great de-puffing powers, boosts radiance and targets dark circles. (As an added bonus, this cream also works like a charm under make-up.) For lips, we love Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask ($25).

Next's 'flattering' £28 lightweight summer dress is 'ideal for holiday'
Next customers are lavishing praise on a "lovely" summer dress that's become a hit online. The brand, renowned for its trendy clothing and accessories, might just have a new crowd-pleaser on its hands. The sought-after Midi Slip Summer Dress is retailing for £28. It comes in a variety of patterns including a bold pink and orange combo, blue tie-dye, as well as black/green and black/animal prints. The coveted dress is available in both regular and petite lengths, catering to sizes six through 22. However, eager buyers should act fast, as some sizes are selling out quickly. Next advises that the fitting runs slightly smaller than standard sizing, an important consideration for online shoppers. The dress boasts a midi cut, adjustable straps for perfect fit, and is notably easy to care for – just toss it in the washing machine. The full product description states: "The perfect dress for sunny holidays or warm weather dressing, this flattering midi-length dress has a lightweight slip design, made from a soft fabric with adjustable shoulder straps and a split side hem," reports the Mirror. (Image: Next) For those still hunting for ideal summer wear, River Island sells the Pink Broderie Midi Dress at £69. Alternatively, New Look's Red Gingham Bow Back Midi Dress is priced at £33.99, while Very offers the stylish Vero Moda Woven Ankle Drop Hem Dress for £44. Shoppers appear mostly delighted with Next's Midi Slip Summer Dress, though a few noted minor issues. One satisfied customer commented, "Bright colourful good quality and fits well," whereas another happy shopper shared, "Lovely summer dress, wore it recently on holiday." One shopper commented on the split in the dress and claimed it felt more like beachwear. They said: "Lovely dress. Fits well but has a very high split up the leg. Think it's more suited to beach wear rather than an every day dress." (Image: Bloomberg, Bloomberg via Getty Images) Meanwhile, some were all for its versatility, with a comment reading: "Great light dress to wear on its own or over your swimsuit, lovely colours material lovely and soft. Great addition to my summer wardrobe." Another buyer found it suitable for multiple occasions: "This is a lovely I wanted to wear it in the day with my swimwear I think I would want to dress it up for night too." Compliments were plentiful, as one shopper expressed satisfaction with their purchase: "Lovely dress. Bought for a Caribbean holiday. Got lots of compliments. True to size. Doesn't crease." Others echoed similar sentiments, with one saying: "Nice light cotton straight summer dress. Ideal for a holiday," another suggesting it was "ideal for holiday." A further compliment came from someone who called it a "Nice little lightweight holiday dress. Good fit."

37 Things With ~Luxury~ Vibes Yet Shockingly Low Price Tags
1. A set of oh-so-cooling Mellanni sheets that feel so soft, you'll wish you could wear them as clothes. They're significantly more affordable than brands like Peachskins or Cozy Earth, but still get rave reviews for their high quality. And when the temps rise — whether it's outside or your AC's playing games — reviewers say these sheets help turn sweaty nights into a cool side of the pillow oasis. Promising review: "My favorite sheets have to be Cozy Earth. But they are way too pricey for a guest bed. These sheets are just as good without the huge price tag. Side by side comparison to these vs expensive brands like Cozy Earth or Peacock Alley — these sheets are thinner and deeper, which actually fit better on our deep mattress with a three-inch topper, and these sheets are just as cool feeling as the higher-end ones when you get in bed. They wash well. Actually better than [the] Peacock Alley brand. They hardly wrinkle. And even after months of use, they are still in great shape. They haven't started to peel yet or fray. No loose threads or tears. Great sheets!" — Susan Promising review: "I read from other reviews these sheets were soft, so I wasn't too surprised when I received them, and man, are they soft and so comfortable. We have Egyptian cotton sheets that were expensive, and I promise we have changed them back out for the comfort of these sheets. The cotton sheets were cold, and these were just right. The other thing is my husband has thin skin, so any nick he will bleed. Well, he has bled on these white sheets and when we washed them (in cold water as instructed) the blood always comes out and never stains. I can't say enough great things about them except to say all three of my adult kids are receiving a set as part of their Christmas!" — Sheree Chrestman Get a set of queen sheets from Amazon for $25.47+ (available in sizes twin–California king, plus sets with deep pockets for taller mattresses and 45 colors/patterns). 2. And a set of satin pillowcases to help minimize hair breakage, reduce friction, and keep frizz in check, all while giving your bedroom that elevated, Egyptian-silk vibe. Plus, it has a similar aesthetic and similar benefits to pricey alternatives like Slip and Kitsch — and reviewers agree. Amazon Promising review:"I bought these to keep my hair from becoming a haystack overnight—and they delivered. Smooth, cool, no weird seams or plasticky feel. The color is soft and elegant, like a glass of rosé that never judges you for watching TV in bed." — Numina Koa Get a set of two from Amazon for $7.99+ (available in four sizes and 38 colors). 3. Oversized square sunnies that'll make you look so stylish and expensive, you should be sitting courtside at a Knicks game. They look like Bottega Veneta, but you'll be laughing all the way to the bank because these are a whole lot cheaper. Another bonus is that they come in many colors *and* have polarized lenses with UV protection! Promising review:"Great unisex sunglasses. Originally bought them for myself, but my boyfriend also fell in love with them! They're durable and heavy so they feel and look more expensive/luxurious than they are! Great purchase!" — Sydney Libstorff Get it from Amazon for $13.99+ (available in 14 colors). 4. A beloved, slow-burning luxury-scented candle with top notes of jasmine, oud, and sandalwood that reviewers say is similar to Le Labo's Santal 33. One reviewer said it reminds them of a "luxury hotel," so it'll pair perfectly with your room service (McDonald's). Lulu Candles is a US-based small business that specializes in scented candles and perfumes. Promising review: "I enjoy having a scented candle burning in my house. But I don't like heavy, floral scents, so finding the perfect scent is difficult. This scent is perfect. It doesn't slap you in the face, it doesn't cling to your clothes and hair hours after leaving the house. This candle is warm, inviting, and elegant." — Micknan Get it from Amazon for $19.95 (available in six sizes, in gift box options, in packs of two, and in a variety of scents). 5. A hydrating E.l.f. lip balm that feels just as buttery soft as Laneige *and* has the same glossy finish to boot. It *also* comes in yummy flavors like Vanilla Frosting, Strawberry, and Honeydew and leaves a sheer tint of color — it's the perfect 'lil treat for your lips! BuzzFeed Shopping writer Emma Lord had this to say: "I love love love this lip balm. I compare it to the $24 version from Summer Fridays, which I've been splurging on — I love that brand because it lasts so long and is so high quality, but this $4 E.l.f. version feels comparable and, more excitingly, comes in smaller versions so I can stock my totes and bathroom with them whether I'm at home or on the go. It's hydrating, lightweight, doesn't get sticky, and adds a perfect ~subtle~ gloss whether I'm using it alone or on top of a lip color. I love the vanilla flavor so much, it's got a similar vibe to the birthday cake flavor that Glossier sometimes carries." Promising review:"I have one in my car, one in my purse, and one at home. These just feel so good on your lips! The flavors are very true to their name. They are pretty small, though, so if you use them often, they won't last long (which is another reason I have three of them), but for $4 each, it is worth it. I sometimes like using this before putting on the E.l.f. Lip Reviver Oil. Such a great base to an awesome lip oil!" — Jax Get it from Amazon for $4 (available in five flavors). 6. A chic oversize sweater-vest to make you feel like you're Blair Waldorf on the Upper East Side — aka the best dressed person in town. Pairing this with a white button-down shirt will make you look like the ultimate fashionista — and little will people know it took minimal money (and effort). Promising review: " I've gotten a ton of compliments on this vest and been asked where I bought it twice. It's heavyweight, so it hangs nicely. The fit is boxy and loose, which is what I wanted. Looks great with high-waisted jeans!" — R. Flip Get it from Amazon for $19.99 (available in women's sizes S–L and in six colors). 7. An ultra-soft faux-fur rug you can lay down beside your bed, fireplace, or on top of a chair to make you feel extra fancy. Placing your feet on something fuzzy and soft will always give you peak luxury vibes. Amazon Promising review:"My parents went to Europe and sat outside on furs like these, and now they do the same at home. They live in the mountains in Utah. They put these on their metal patio chairs and then cover themselves with a blanket outside in the winter. The faux furs keep your backside insulated and then topped with the blanket, they are able to have cocktail hour(s) on the deck all year long! It's honestly pretty sweet and the dog gets her own to lie on when she's outside too." — Amazon Customer Get it from Amazon for $12.34+ (available in six sizes and 11 colors). 8. A chic satin pajama set that feels so comfortable you'll never want to take it off — and honestly, you shouldn't. It's made for those slow, golden mornings when the sun's rising, your favorite mug is warm in your hands, and you're wrapped in silky luxury that says, "Yes, I am the main character." Bonus points if the neighbors catch a glimpse 'cause it's time they know elegance lives around the corner. Promising review:"I'm obsessed with these pajamas. They're so silky and comfy. They feel luxurious. Washed nicely and didn't shrink. I bought two more pairs!" — Laura S. Get it from Amazon for $19.99+ (available in women's sizes XS–3XL and dozens of colors). 9. French tip press-on nails to get a salon-worthy set without spending an arm and a leg. These press-ons last up to 30 days, take just 10 minutes to apply, and save you serious cash — 'cause why are manicures so expensive? 🤨 Promising review: " They are amazing! I buffed out my nails, cleaned up the cuticle, cleaned them with an alcohol pad and then applied the nails. I used them with the beginner's solid glue by the brand and cured it and then applied a top coat and cured. They literally look so good in person!! I just ordered the XS almond ones and will try those next. They feel very sturdy!" — Andrea Romero Get a 300-piece set from Amazon for $21.59+ (available in 15 sizes/styles). 10. A sturdy golden Kitsch claw clip that's basically jewelry for your hair. But don't let the minimalist design fool you, reviewers say it does a great job holding thick hair in place all day long. Kitsch is a woman-owned accessory brand that was founded in 2010. They also sell cute scrunchies, cloth face masks, satin pillowcases, and more. Promising review:"Feels expensive. This hair clip works very well and also feels like a very high-end item. It's very sturdy and is a great, trendy replacement for plastic claw clips." — Mae Get it from Amazon for $7.99 (available in silver and gold). 11. A pair of wireless Bluetooth earbuds for the peeps who want AirPods but don't feel like dropping serious dough on them. These have many of the features (including good sound quality and long battery life) *plus* these are actually waterproof and come with a set of silicone ear tips for a more custom, comfortable fit. Reviewers rave about how these last for years! These come with a wireless charging case that provides up to 45 hours of total playtime (with the earbuds able to play for 10+ hours on a single charge!). "I was one of those people still walking around with a cord dangling from my ears because I could never find a wireless pair that worked for me. Enter these life-changing earbuds! I tried all the different silicone ear tips included and got *the* perfect fit. I use them for both listening to music/podcasts and talking on the phone. The sound quality is amazing, and I have to charge these MAYBE once a week, depending on how much I use them. I'm never going back to AirPods... or dangly wires." —Courtney Promising review:"Best decision! These are the greatest headphones ever! I saw them on TikTok months ago and added them to my wish list. I got a new phone that doesn't have the headphone port, so I decided it was time to finally buy them. They are amazing, and I probably won't ever take them out of my ears! 😂" — Kate Arnold Get it from Amazon for $24.99+ (available in five colors). 12. Or a pair of wireless over-the-ear headphones with the same sleek, shiny shell design of AirPods Max. These have pretty decent noise cancellation (according to reviewers) and a built-in mic to answer calls, and they feel super comfy on your ears with their extra padding. For only 20 bucks, they're a much safer (and wallet-friendly) purchase if you're unsure about Apple's headphones — they are over $500, after all... They have 10 hours of battery life, too! iJoy is a small business that specializes in headphones and tech accessories. Check out why BuzzFeed Shopping writer Emma Lord loves these: I own a pair of these, and because I'm vain as heck and need to own all things pink, but I was decently surprised by how well they muffle noise! I feel like these are ideal for people who still want to hear some of the world around them (read: parents, people working in open offices), but still want to listen to their tunes comfortably. The charge on these goes for at least four hours (I haven't tried it beyond that yet), and the Bluetooth connects to my devices super easily. Excellent pair of headphones for the price point. Promising review: "They're comfortable, hold a charge really well, and actually work really well in terms of noise cancellation. My daughter can be sitting next to me, talking, and I can barely even hear her. I almost prefer these in terms of sound quality to my Gen 1 AirPods as well. Easy to charge, easy to pair, very lightweight, and the fit is adjustable. I'm very impressed with these headphones!" — Samantha H. Get it from Amazon for $19.99+ (available in five colors). 13. A beautiful tennis bracelet so you can have some new wrist candy that stays in good condition after repeated wears *and* (most importantly) sparkles. ✨ If you checked out the Swarovski version and are even a little bit unsure about swiping your card, trying this one out first is the way to go. Think of it as a cheap test drive! Promising review: "Soooo pretty. It's 100% a Swarovski [alternative] for so cheap. Looks exactly like the photo, and I wear it every day." — Trysten Walters Promising review: "I just lost my very real gold tennis bracelet. I've heard good things about this company and decided to order one that looked like the one I lost. It just came in, and it looks as nice as my real one. I don't know how it will do as time goes, but for $19, it's a great buy" — Alina Get it from Amazon for $17.95+ (available in three lengths, 14-karat gold-plated or 18-karat gold vermeil, in yellow, rose, or white gold, and in packs of two). 14. Now, you can spread the scent of your favorite candle throughout your space without an open flame — it's safer *and* can help your candle last longer. Promising review:"The height adjustment feature allows me to customize the melting speed, while the dimmable option creates a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Reviewers like this *more* than Drunk Elephant because it can be worn as a skin tint and it's less glittery. Promising review: "I used this with my Olay Regenerist Cream (it helps with my wrinkles). I mixed it, and it gives it a great deal of shine! You should buy it if you're looking for a Drunk Elephant Bronzi Drops substitute! Way better than Drunk Elephant." — raegan kuball Promising review: "I actually like this glowy lotion better than the Drunk Elephant one, and I have both. This goes on smoothly and is not greasy. It leaves you very glowy with a beautiful tan and works well with makeup on top if you so wish. Lasting power, too. Recommend." — ggvega Get it from Amazon for $13.98+ (available in five shades and as a two-pack). 17. Let its light notes of jasmine, hibiscus, and sun musk transport you into a lush garden by the sea before your daily grind starts. Amazon Promising review: "I finally received my new body spray yesterday and was in complete shock at the resemblance to Baccarat Rouge 540. This body spray is so delicious. It is definitely a Baccarat Rouge 540 [alternative]. There were so many reviews that said how much this body spray resembled the very pricey perfume, and they were all correct. I absolutely love Baccarat Rouge 540, but it's so expensive compared to other perfumes like Chanel, so I opt not to purchase it regularly. This body spray is a wonderful substitute for overpriced perfume. Today will be my first day wearing the spray, so hopefully, it has great longevity throughout the day as well. 🤞🏼 Regardless, I would still purchase it again moving forward." — Tina Get it from Amazon for $38 (also available in two sizes and nine other scents). 28. Britain's Got Talent fans astonished as singer from forgotten girl band opens semi-final show
The 2025 live semi-finals of Britain's Got Talent got off to a sensational start as Karis Anderson stormed the stage to belt out a classic Tina Turner hit as she opened the show Britain's Got Talent fans were stunned to learn the opening performer of first semi final show of the 2025 season was once in a hit girl band. The long-running series kicked off with a show stopping performance from singer Karis Anderson - who is currently leading the cast of the hit West End musical Tina. The 35-year-old singer takes on the role of iconic singer Tina Turner in the musical - which chronicles the life and career of the Goldeneye singer who passed away at the age of 83 in 2023. Britain's Got Talent viewers were treated to a dazzling performance from Karis, who belted out the 1966 Ike & Tina Turner singer River Deep Mountain High. While many were blown away by Karis's powerful vocals alone - many others were gobsmacked when they realised they recognised the singer for her career away from the West End. That's because the singer is a member of girl band Stooshe - which she performed in alongside Alexandra Buggs and Courtney Rumbold. The trio formed their band in 2010 after answering a call for auditions, and signed a record deal with Warner Music in August 2011. They went on to release the hit singles Slip, Love Me and the Number 3 hit Black Heart - while their debut album, London with the Lights On, was released in 2013 and reached number 8 on the charts. Those tuning in to watch BGT on Saturday night were stunned by Karis's powerhouse vocals - and wished that they could vote for her to win the contest. One wrote on X: "Karis Anderson singing Tina Turner should win Britain's Got Talent." While another typed: "The amazingly fabulous Tina Musical to start!" Fans of Stooshe may be disappointed that the group have not released any music since 2016 - and do not appear to have any plans to make any more tracks. Last year, the band posted on their official Instagram to confirm they have no plans to release music. Alexandra from the band wrote: "Hey loves, I'm sorry to say we aren't announcing new music before I get your hopes up. 'Your girls a mumma (been for a couple years now lol) and I am starting a new business within the parent and baby space.' Saturday night saw Scottish singer Vinnie Mckee and Swiss dance troupe The Blackouts make it through to the grand final. Vinnie won the votes of the viewing public to make his way to the final. While The Blackouts were automatically sent through after judge Amanda Holden gifted them the first ever golden buzzer of the live semi final shows. For the 2025 season there has been a rule change where one judge is nominated each episode and granted the power to slap the golden buzzer and grant an act finalist status. After being wowed by the team - who were delayed to the stage by technical issues - Amanda hit the buzzer and they went through. However, the rule change has sparked a mixed response from fans - with many fearing the final will be overfilled with the judges favourites rather than viewer favourites. And many watching at home found the live studio audience unbearable as they screamed at Amanda to hit the gold buzzer after every performance - until The Blackouts were given the reward. One complained on X: "the golden buzzer in the semi finals already causing havoc cause the audience won't shut up #bgt." And another complained: "Will this audience shut up #BGT." Many viewers hit out over the decision to introduce a golden buzzer during the live semi final rounds. One wrote: "#BGT so basically the judges may as well ljust pick the finalists and forget about the semis ... what a joke." Another typed: "A live show golden buzzer is completely unnecessary. What if she doesn't press it at all? #BGT." And another raged: "#BGT in other words it's so the judges can fix it!" Others took to social media to blast the format of multiple semi final shows stretched over more than a month. One complained, writing: "So every Saturday for the next 6 weeks, is the Semi Final episodes #BGT."
