Ed Warren described the entity as a powerful demonic force, noting the presence of chilling cold spots and a menacing dark shadow within the house. He also recounted a chilling message that purportedly appeared on a mirror, demanding that he leave the premises. In their attempts to exorcise the demon, the Warrens employed religious music and prayer. Ed Warren further claimed to have captured audio recordings of the demon manifesting as knocks on the walls. Their investigation into the Smurl Haunting spanned several months, adding another dark chapter to their extensive case files. Public Scrutiny and Differing Explanations The Smurl Haunting garnered significant media attention, drawing various individuals to the case, including not only the Warrens but also clergy members, psychologists, and skeptical investigators. Each group offered differing perspectives on the events, with some suggesting natural or psychological explanations for the family's experiences. The lack of definitive physical evidence led many to question the validity of the supernatural claims. From Haunted House to Book and Screen Intriguingly, the same year that the Warrens initiated their investigation, the Smurl's alleged experiences were chronicled in a book titled The Haunted. This book further amplified the family's claims and the details surrounding the haunting. In 1991, the story was adapted into a made-for-television movie bearing the same title, The Haunted, bringing the Smurl's terrifying narrative to a wider audience. The Conjuring Universe Takes on the Last Rites The upcoming film, The Conjuring: Last Rites, will likely narrow its focus to the intense 1986 investigation led by Ed and Lorraine Warren, rather than attempting to cover the entire fifteen-year span of the alleged haunting. The newly released trailer strongly suggests a dark and unsettling tone, hinting at the terrifying events that unfolded within the Smurl household. Real story behind final Conjuring film as family 'shared home with four spirits'
The fourth and final instalment of horror movie The Conjuring is set to hit screens in September, and here's the spooky true story behind the tale... It's good and bad news for The Conjuring fans, as it's been announced the fourth movie in the saga will be released this September, however, it's the fourth and final. The Conjuring: Last Rites will feature yet another real life case, investigated by paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. A first look trailer was released earlier this week for the final instalment of the film, which is inspired by the real life Smurl Haunting. The final movie is set in 1986, as the pair enter retirement. However, it's not much of a rest for the pair who find themselves brought out of retirement by Janet and Jack Smurl to investigate their house in West Pittston, Pennsylvania. The real life story started in 1973 when the couple moved into a house with their two daughters. However, things stared to take a turn when strange things started happening. Initially, it was only small things such as tools going missing and reappearing. However, things started to get worse when a light fixture fell from the ceiling, cutting their daughter Shannon Smurl on the head. Afterwards, things only started to get worse as the couple claimed to hear blood-curdling screams in their abode. Their dog was also allegedly thrown against the wall, and their daughters pushed down the stairs. Janet also claimed to have been picked up by a presence, while Jack claimed that he was sexually assaulted by a presence. Ed and Lorraine's website states that they "concluded that the Smurls shared their home with four spirits: a harmless elderly woman, a young and possibly violent girl, a man who suffered and died in the home, and a demon that used the other three spirits to destroy the Smurl family." In the chilling trailer, which has racked up over 6 million views in the first 24 hours, fans get a glimpse of the creepy dolls, and even Lorraine is scared, as she can be heard shakily saying: "Ed.... something's changed. Something's different," as blood can be seen pouring all over the kitchen floor. She can then be heard screaming as a voice says: "We've been waiting patiently for you..." Fans are sad to see the saga come to an end, as one commented beneath the trailer: "Watching it in the theatres is the last thing I can do to bid farewell to this amazing series." "Nothing lasts forever... but the impact that James Wan, Patrick Wilson, and Vera Farmiga had on the horror genre will live eternally," penned another, as a third wrote: "The final Conjuring. I never thought I'd see the day. What a franchise."

Inside chilling TRUE story that inspired The Conjuring: Last Rites as first trailer for fourth film hits web
The fourth and final installment of the beloved Conjuring movies is coming in September... and horror fans will be thrilled to know it is based off a chilling true story. Warner Bros. unveiled the first look at the movie, called The Conjuring: Last Rites, on Thursday, and boy, does it look like it's going to be a wild ride. The horror flick is set to showcase another famous case that paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren - played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga - took on during their decades-long career. In the trailer, Ed and Lorraine explain that they have decided to put an end to their ghost hunting and retire - but when a desperate couple claiming that a demon is terrorizing their family comes begging for help, they agree to help out one last time. It turns out, the film was inspired by the harrowing Smurl haunting, which wreaked havoc on a small town in Pennsylvania in late 1970s and early 1980s. Jack and Janet Smurl moved into a stunning duplex home in the charming town of West Pittston, Pennsylvania, in 1973 with their two young daughters. But soon after arriving, the couple claimed that strange things started happening. They alleged that they started hearing loud bangs and smelling weird odors around the house. They claimed that things continuously worsened as time went on: their possessions began moving on their own, and things soon turned violent. They alleged that a force threw their dog against a wall and pushed one of their daughters down the stairs. Jack even claimed that he was sexually assaulted by the entity - which they believed to be a demon. 'A light fixture fell from the ceiling, cutting one of the daughters on impact. The family dog was thrown against the wall,' read a description of the events on the website of Ed and Lorraine's organization, which is now run by their daughter and son-in-law. 'Janet said she was picked up by an invisible presence, dangling some six feet in the air, and then tossed across the room. 'Jack claimed a succubus (female demon) entered the living room and raped him while a baseball game played on the TV. 'Even neighbors reported hearing screams from the house while the family was out.' In 1986, the couple called the Warrens in for help. They also went public with their story, which earned them immense media attention. According to reports, Ed told newspapers at the time that he witnessed furniture moving and saw 'dark shadows' during his visits to the house. The Smurl's alleged that the 'demon' threw their dog against a wall and pushed one of their daughters down the stairs. The family is seen in The Conjuring: Last Rites Ed and Lorraine's website states that after their investigation, they ultimately 'concluded that the Smurls shared their home with four spirits.' Stills from The Conjuring trailer are seen He also claimed that he felt a sudden drop in temperature and that the 'demon' left a message on the mirror that said 'get out.' Ed and Lorraine's website states that after their investigation, they ultimately 'concluded that the Smurls shared their home with four spirits: a harmless elderly woman, a young and possibly violent girl, a man who suffered and died in the home, and a demon that used the other three spirits to destroy the Smurl family.' Together, the Smurls and the Warrens teamed up to write a book about their experiences in the home, entitled The Haunted, which was later turned into a movie of the same name. In the end, the Smurls moved out of the home and a woman named Debra Owens bought it, and she claimed she 'never encountered anything supernatural while living there.' In The Conjuring: Last Rites, Janet and Jack will be played by Rebecca Calder and Elliot Cowan respectively. The film is set to hit theaters on September 5, 2025.
