Real story behind final Conjuring film as family 'shared home with four spirits'

Daily Mirror09-05-2025

The fourth and final instalment of horror movie The Conjuring is set to hit screens in September, and here's the spooky true story behind the tale...
It's good and bad news for The Conjuring fans, as it's been announced the fourth movie in the saga will be released this September, however, it's the fourth and final.
The Conjuring: Last Rites will feature yet another real life case, investigated by paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.

A first look trailer was released earlier this week for the final instalment of the film, which is inspired by the real life Smurl Haunting. The final movie is set in 1986, as the pair enter retirement. However, it's not much of a rest for the pair who find themselves brought out of retirement by Janet and Jack Smurl to investigate their house in West Pittston, Pennsylvania.

The real life story started in 1973 when the couple moved into a house with their two daughters. However, things stared to take a turn when strange things started happening. Initially, it was only small things such as tools going missing and reappearing.
However, things started to get worse when a light fixture fell from the ceiling, cutting their daughter Shannon Smurl on the head. Afterwards, things only started to get worse as the couple claimed to hear blood-curdling screams in their abode.
Their dog was also allegedly thrown against the wall, and their daughters pushed down the stairs. Janet also claimed to have been picked up by a presence, while Jack claimed that he was sexually assaulted by a presence.
Ed and Lorraine's website states that they "concluded that the Smurls shared their home with four spirits: a harmless elderly woman, a young and possibly violent girl, a man who suffered and died in the home, and a demon that used the other three spirits to destroy the Smurl family."

In the chilling trailer, which has racked up over 6 million views in the first 24 hours, fans get a glimpse of the creepy dolls, and even Lorraine is scared, as she can be heard shakily saying: "Ed.... something's changed. Something's different," as blood can be seen pouring all over the kitchen floor.
She can then be heard screaming as a voice says: "We've been waiting patiently for you..."
Fans are sad to see the saga come to an end, as one commented beneath the trailer: "Watching it in the theatres is the last thing I can do to bid farewell to this amazing series."
"Nothing lasts forever... but the impact that James Wan, Patrick Wilson, and Vera Farmiga had on the horror genre will live eternally," penned another, as a third wrote: "The final Conjuring. I never thought I'd see the day. What a franchise."

Ed Sheeran has 24-hour security to shield his family from 'dangerous people' The pop star has insisted on tough security measures at his expansive property in Suffolk Ed Sheeran and fiance Cherry Seaborn (Image: Getty Images ) Ed Sheeran has "24-hour security" guarding his family because there are "lots of dangerous people out there". The pop star has insisted on tough security measures at his expansive property in Suffolk - where he lives with his wife Cherry and their two daughters - as well as bodyguards when they are all out and about because a "couple of weird things" have happened over the years including an attempted break-in. ‌ During an appearance on 'The Louis Theroux Podcast', Ed explained: "I do think that there is a different kind of normal that is our business. I have like 24-hour security on my house. I have security with my kids. ‌ "I have security with me. I have security with my wife, just because there have been a couple of weird things over the years that have happened.' Just so you know there's lots of dangerous people out there. We've had like you know a break-in attempt. "In my industry, that's normal. That's kind of like an underlying thing that no one really talks about, but that is kind of a part of being in the public eye." Article continues below Ed and Cherry are parents to Lyra, four, and Jupiter, two, and the singer is determined to stop his kids being photographed because he wants to protect their privacy for as long as possible. He added: "I'm very, very private about my children's image ... I can't take them to zoos or parks or anything really without someone trying to film them. "There are times where the normal parts of life I kind of mourn for and wish I could push my kid on a swing in a public park and it not be weird, you know?" Ed pointed out that his kids "have not signed up" to the pitfalls of fame and success. ‌ The Perfect hitmaker explained: "People go, well that's the trade-off. But my kids have not signed up to that." The singer went on to insist that he prefers to take commercial flights rather than hide away on private jets but it can lead to problems. He explained: "We're flying back on Ryanair from a gig in Italy last year but all of my fans who'd been at the gig were flying back! Article continues below "I like the environment, I like trees. I'd find it hard to justify. No one's perfect. When we're doing intense promo trips, there will be the odd time [taking a private jet]."

Loose Women's Christine Lampard hides face as co-star makes jibe about husband

Christine Lampard was left red-faced after Janet Street-Porter made comments about her husband Frank Lampard's physique during the latest edition of Loose Women Loose Women made a splash when it returned on Wednesday (11 June). Christine Lampard led the panel and was joined by Janet Street Porter, GK Barry, and Jane Moore. In the latest edition, the team tackled a medley of hot topics and chatted with stars like Joanna Page and Liz McClarnon. ‌ At one point, the discussion turned to the contrasts between type A and type B personalities, especially in terms of how they prepare for holidays versus their normal routines. ‌ After Grace shared tales from her recent trip with partner Ella Rutherford, Janet couldn't resist teasing Christine about her own vacation snaps with hubby Frank Lampard. "Christine's grilling you about this, but the pictures of her on holiday last weekend, I was looking at," Janet said. "Now, before we talk about type A or type B, can we just talk about your husband's physique?" The studio erupted into laughter at the question, and Janet confessed she'd even shown her other half the photos of the ex-Chelsea star due to his impressive shape, reports Belfast Live. With a comedic jab, Janet said: "Pictures of Frank online, diving into the pool, flab-free! I said to my partner, 'Look at Frank Lampard. He's not six months pregnant." Christine, giggling and somewhat mortified, hit back: "Janet! I tell you what, Janet's taken up four minutes there just talking about Frank Lampard!" ‌ Christine provided a glimpse into her marriage by complimenting her husband, with whom she has two children, for being "incredibly good" at planning trips and holidays due to his affinity for organisation. She stated: "Now, to give Frank his physique, and his personality dues, he is A type. He is incredibly good at organising things, and it's a bit like you just described there. "He's very good, and I think it's just his personality. It's what he's always been like. He likes planning; he likes an itinerary. He likes to have everything booked. He has no problem taking care of everything." The couple, who started dating in 2009 and married in December 2015, have a son and daughter together, and Christine also acts as stepmother to Frank's two daughters from a previous relationship. Loose Women airs on weekdays on ITV1 from 12.30pm

‘He's not coming back': Casualty confirms death tragedies as BBC drops new trail

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Iain Dean (Michael Stevenson) is in danger in Casualty soon, as this new trailer shows the drama he will be involved in throughout the medical drama's next boxset. The new mini-series is called Supply and Demand and primarily focuses on the paramedics working at Holby City Hospital. In the first episode – which airs this Saturday – it's been three months since the ambulance crash, and Jan Jennings (Di Botcher) is still struggling to trust young paramedic Indie Jankowski (Naomi Wakszlak). For Iain, who has a great deal of experience when it comes to crashing ambulances and landing into trouble, he takes Indie under his wing and grows frustrated at Jan, believing she should move past the incident. The twelve-parter will delve into the realities of a drug crisis as an interruption to the drug supply chain causes the ED to fall under even more pressure. In this trailer, we see the moment Iain chases danger again, climbing up onto a crane for a daring rescue. As the paramedic team begins to fall apart as a result of many factors, Iain will spend time with Hart – the Hazardous Area Response Team. Star Michael Stevenson recently told me more about Iain's decision to leave Holby…albeit temporarily. 'The offer that comes in for Hart, it sort of side-lines him a little bit and you know as much as he is happy that he's settled now and married and all that kind of stuff, you'll never take that element away from him that he is drawn to the excitement and the thrill of danger. 'And you know he's been with Hems before, Hems is always a good shout for him to do because of the next level up of rescue that he gets to do and stuff like that, but Hart is a whole new level. More Trending 'That is his first temptation away from it, but then what reinforces that is the team around him that he's spent so long building and nurturing is slowly starting to fall apart and that only gets worse as things transpire after this episode.' Supply and Demand will also see Flynn (Olly Rix) struggle to connect with his daughters, while Ngozi (Adesuwa Oni) continues to receive support from Dylan (William Beck), following the reveal that she has an addiction to alcohol.
